VEEDERSBURG — George Francis Merrill, 80, Veedersburg, died at 4:15 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000 at his residence. He had battled Parkinson's Disease for 17 years. He was born April 11, 1920 in Veedersburg, the son of Harry G. “Pat”, Sr. and Lena Dawson Merrill. He married Bernice Elizabeth Seymour Jan. 1, 1949 on the Seymour family farm outside of Hillsboro. She survives. He was a lifelong resident of Veedersburg, graduating from Veedersburg High School class of 1939. He worked for the Veedersburg Post Office, 37 years as a clerk, 28 years assistant postmaster for two years and finished out as postmaster for the last seven years. He retired Sept. 8, 1978. He was a member of Sterling Christian Church and the Veedersburg Lions Club. He belonged to the National Campers and Hikers Association (Hub Nuts). He enjoyed fishing, camping, mushroom hunting, antique cars and carpentry work. He was always willing to help out anyone who needed it and never knew a stronger. He loved traveling and taking pictures of the many places they visited. He enjoyed going to Florida in the winter to fish. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchild. Survivors, besides the wife, include: a son, John (Susie) Merrill, Cambria; two daughters, Linda Edgar, Lafayette and Ann Conner (fiancee Fred Howard), Danville, Ill.; three grandchildren, Natasha (Mick) Morton, Covington, David Merrill, Iowa City, Iowa and Eric Conner, Greencastle; a great-grandchildren, Paisley Morton, Covington; a brother, Ted (Carol) Merrill, Veedersburg and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his step mother, Vida Merrill; a brother, Harry “Cobb” Merrill, Jr.; a sister, Kate Cushman; three nephews, Tom Merrill, Brad Cushman and Timothy Merrill; his father-in-law, Bob Seymour and a brother-in-law, Ervin Seymour. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) in Dickerson Funeral Home, Veedersburg, with the Rev. Gary Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Rockfield Cemetery, Veedersburg. – jlr
