NEWTOWN — Helen M. (Eichelberger) Mitchell, 86, Newtown, died at 1:25 a.m. Saturday, July 13, 2002 in Home Hospital, Lafayette, after being hospitalized for two days. She was born April 24, 1916 northeast of Newtown, the daughter of Alex E. and Harriet Hedge Eichelberger. She married Daniel L. Mitchell in October 1936 west of Mellott. He survives. She was a life resident of the Newtown area, graduating from Newtown High School in 1934. She worked as a bookkeeper for the family business of Mitchell Construction Company in Newtown. She served as the town clerk-treasurer for Newtown for 30 years, when she retired that position in the fall of 2001. She was a member of the Newtown Community Church, past matron of the Newtown Chapter #282 Order of the Eastern Star which is presently affiliated with the Fern Chapter #194 O.E.S. of Hillsboro. She served as Electa and in 1969 served as the worthy grand matron for the Indiana Grand Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. She had served for 20 years as the grand treasurer of the Indiana Grand Chapter Order of Eastern Star and had been the title of grand treasurer emeritus. She was a member of Home Economics Club and Sewing Club, both of Newtown. She was a former Rainbow Advisor for the Rainbow Girls in Newtown. She had served as den mother for the Cub Scout pack in Newtown. She had formerly been active in bowling leagues at Shawnee Lanes in Attica. Survivors, besides the wife, include: two sons, David (Lucy) Mitchell, Newtown and Bill (Arlene) Mitchell, Attica; five grandchildren, Cindy (Scott) Krout, Newtown, Howard (Shelly) Mitchell, Indianapolis, Jeannine Fritzen, Newtown, Sherri (Pat) McGraw and Jay (Missy) Mitchell, both of Attica; five great-grandchildren, Lauren and Megan Krout, Kelly Mitchell and McKenna Mitchell and Hunter McGraw. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Maus Funeral Home, Attica, with Mike Parks officiating. Burial was in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery, Waynetown. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice. – jlr
