PAYTON, Zula

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, at the Parham Funeral Home, Veedersburg, for Zula Payton, 73, 512 S. Main, Veedersburg.  She died at 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 13, at her home.

    Max Paddock officiated.  Burial was in Bonebrake Cemetery.

    Mrs. Payton, owner of Payton’s Grocery Store since 1953, introduced Payton’s barbecue in 1962 which became a widely known product throughout the area.  She also was an avid sports fan.     

    She was born March 4, 1911, at Crawfordsville, the daughter of Newton and Clara Cunningham Peevler.  She was married Nov. 24, 1928, to Glen Payton, who died in 1973.

    Survivors include two sons, Duane, West Lebanon, and Donald, Veedersburg; a daughter, Mrs. William (Lois) Edwards, West Lafayette and five grandchildren.
