Max Philpott, 73, of Lafayette died at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday in Regency Place Health Care Center. He had been in failing health for two months. He graduated from Wallace High School in 1937. A resident of the Lafayette area since 1946, he retired in 1974 from Dillon True Value Hardware at Lafayette where he had worked as a salesman for five years. He served in the Army during World War II in the Po Valley North Apennines Mountain Division. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1154 and a member of the American Legion Post at Lafayette and Moose Lodge 1529.

He was born Jan 4 1919 in Fountain County to Glenn and Ava Furr Philpott. On Sept 9, 1949 he married Ilona Schliff at Logansport. She survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Monalynn; three brothers, Donald, Carol and Lloyd; and two sisters Ena Elmore and Lois Melvin. Graveside services are set for 2 p.m. Friday in Zackmire Cemetery at Wallace with full military rites. Friends may call 10 a.m. to noon Friday at Landis-Loy Mortuary. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
