POLAND, Benjamin - Fountain County INGenWeb Project

Danville, Ill., May 12 - Dr. Benjamin I. Poland, prominent oculist and aurist of this city for the past twenty-five years, but formerly a school teacher in Warren County, Indiana, and a physician and surgeon at Perrysville, died at a Danville hospital this morning of paralysis of the throat. He was taken ill in his office Wednesday afternoon and became unconscious soon afterward. He was born in Gallatin County, Kentucky, Oct., 1854. He came to Indiana with his parents when 7 years old and settled at State Line. He attended school until 17 years old and then became a teacher in the Warren and Fountain county schools. After eight years teaching he decided to become a physician. After three years in a Chicago medical college, he located at Perrysville where he lived until 1885, when he removed here. Ten years later he began to specialize on diseases of the nose, throat, eyes and ears and was the official oculist of the Big Four, the Wabash and the Chicago & Eastern Illinios railways for more than twenty years.
