  James L. Pugh, 85, superintendent of the Covington School Corporation from 1945 through 1960, died at 9 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 14, 1979, in Clearwater, Fla. He had been in Florida since November and ill for several months.
  Born in Upland, Ind., he attended the United Methodist Church and was a member and past master of the Arcana Masonic Lodge 427.
  He was a member and past worthy patron of the Order of Eastern Star 4211 and the Scottish Rite Valley of Fort Wayne. He was affiliated with the Covington Lions Club, Royal Center and belonged to a number of school administrative organizations.
  He was a teacher and principal from 1930 to 1945 at Upland High School and was an administrator in the Pioneer School District in Cass County from 1960 until 1969 when he retired to South Bend.
  Survivors include two sons, Jim Pugh of Muncie and Richard Pugh of Bloomington; a brother, Paul Pugh of Upland; and four grandchildren.
  Services were at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Jones Funeral Home in Upland, with the Rev. George Fenstermacher officiating. Burial was in Jefferson Cemetery. Friends will be received from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday. Masonic rites will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday. – thanks to S

James L. Pugh, 85, formerly of Muncie died Sunday in Clearwater Beach, Florida.  He had been in poor health since Thanksgiving.  An Upland native, Mr. Pugh was affiliated with the United Methodist Church.  He was past master of Arcana Masonic Lodge 427, Upland, past worthy patron of Order of Eastern Star 411, Upland and a member of Scottish Rite, Valley of Fort Wayne. He was also affiliated with the Lions Clubs at Covington and Royal Center as well as several school administration organizations.
Mr. Pugh was a teacher and principal at Upland HS from 1930-1946; Superintendent of the Covington School System from 1945-1960 and administrator of Pioneer School Corporation in Cass County from 1960-1969 when he retired.  He was also a WWI veteran.  Survivors include two sons, Jim Pugh, Muncie, principal of Central HS with whom he resided while in Muncie and Richard Pugh, Bloomington, associate dean of education at Indiana University; a brother, Paul Pugh, Upland and four grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in Jones Funeral Home, Upland with burial to follow in Jefferson Cemetery there.  Friends may call at the funeral home 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday. Masonic rites will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. -kbz
