Ernie Pyle, Dana’s famous war correspondent son, will be buried in the new National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, the Army announced Wednesday. The body of the United Features Syndicate columnist will arrive in Hawaii Feb. 14 from Saipan.
The removal was requested by Pyle’s father, William C. Pyle of Dana.
The newspaperman, who so faithfully expressed the thoughts and attitudes of GI Joe in the North African, European, and Pacific Theaters, was killed by a Japanese machinegun bullet in April 1945 on Le Shima Islet near Saipan. – S&E
