Lafayette—Marie C. Hicks Ray, 76, 1020 S. 19th St., Lafayette, died at 2:03 a.m. Friday, March 17, 1989 in Home Hospital, where she had been hospitalized since Dec. 22, following a lengthy illness.

  She was born March 2, 1913 in Elizabethtown, Ky. She spent most of her life in the Lafayette area. She was first married in 1937 to Water Martin, who preceded her in death in 1941. On Dec. 10, 1947, she was married in Attica to Sam Ray, who survives. He is retired from Alcoa.

  She was a licensed beautician for 40 years and owned and operated her own shop in Terre Haute for a time. She also had been a manager/buyer for Loeb’s Department Store in the cosmetic department.

  She was a member of First Christian Church, Hope Chapter 5 Order of Eastern Star, Order of White Shrine of Jerusalem and Social Order of the Beauceant. She was a life member of Beta Sigma Phi and was past president of Business and Professional Women.

  Surviving besides her husband is a sister, Edna Bogan, Monitor. She was also preceded in death by one sister.
  Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Monday in Hippensteel Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Jack L. Snellgrove officiating. Burial was in Concord Cemetery.
