Waynetown - Fred Rice, 83, of Waynetown died Sunday in Culver Hospital. He had been a patient there for a week. He had been in ill health for the past several months. Mr. Rice was born in Fountain County near Mellott May 15, 1886, to Washington and Susie Rice. He married Flossie Helms who preceded him in death. He later married Julia Hockett in Crawfordsville November 2, 1948. He played the French horn and other instruments in the Newtown band for 50 years. A farmer in the Breaks School area, he was a member of Liberty Chapel Church. He attended schools in the Mellott and Newtown area. Surviving are his wife; two stepsons, Bill Hockett of New Richmond and Roy Hockett of Gary; two nephews, Irvin Davis of Linden and Carl Davis of Covington and one niece, Mrs. Nora Cochran of New Richmond. He was preceded in death by two sisters. Rev. Everett White of the Liberty Chapel Church will officiate at services in the Servies-Thomas Funeral Home at Waynetown Wed nesday February 11 at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Old Union Cemetery near Newtown. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Tuesday. -- kbz
