Wingate -- Reed Rice, 74, of Rt. 1, Wingate, died at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday in St. Elizabeth Hospital at Danville, Ill. He had been in failing health for several years. A Mellott area resident most of his life, he had resided at Rt 1, Wingate since 1936. He was a 1930 graduate of Hillsboro HS and member of New Antioch Christian Church and a life member of Holstein Friesian Association. He was a school bus driver for 35 years for Richland Township and Fountain Central schools. He was a retired farmer. Mr. Rice was born Oct 30, 1909 at Campbells Prarie near Covington, a son of Clarence and Clara Wade Rice. He was married to Vivian C. Gilkey on Oct 21, 1935 at Hillsboro. She survives. Also surviving are 3 sons: Byron and Lee of Rt 1, Wingate; a daughter, Mrs. Gale (Lois) Ingalbe of Rt 3, Veedersburg; two brothers, Ralph of Scotts BLuff, Neb and James of Florida; 13 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; five great grandchildren and and two step-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, a brother and two sisters. Private services will be noon Thursday in Crumley-Williams Funeral Home, Hillsboro with Rev. Loren Hetrick officiating. Burial will be in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the service on Thursday. - kbz

Wingate – L. Reed Rice, 74, a retired farmer and school bus driver, died at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Danville, Ill. He had been hospitalized 10 days.  A 1929 graduate of Hillsboro HS, he lived in the Mellott area most of his life and at Rt 1, Wingate since 1936. He was married Oct 21, 1935 in Hillsboro to Vivian Gilkey who survives. Mr. Rice farmed in this area many years and was a driver for Richland Township and Fountain Central HS for 35 years. He retired in 1969.  He was a member of New Antioch Christian Church and life member of Holstein-Friesian Association. Surviving with the widow are three sons, Byron and Lee Rice, both of Rt 3, Veedersburg and Charles Rice, Rt 1, Wingate; a daughter, Mrs. Gale (Lois) Ingalsbe of Rt 3, Veedersburg and two brothers, Ralph Rice of Scottsbluff, Neb and James Rice of Florida. - kbz
