Martha Doreen (Fisher) Rich, 83, of Covington, died at her residence on Thursday, June 15, 2000 at 8:15 a.m. She was in end stage lung disease the past 1 1/2 years from having contracted Tuberculosis as an adolescent. Born in Russiaville on November 14, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Bayless and Sarah Rozella “Rose” (Carter) Fisher. She was the baby of the family. She graduated from Russiaville High School in 1935 and Kokomo Business College. Her marriage was to Robert E. Rich on October 16, 1942 at Lynn Friends Church in Russiaville. He preceded her in death on December 7, 1985. They owned and operated Rich’s Appliance Store in Attica, where she also worked as bookkeeper. Martha was formerly a member of Lynn Friends Church and later attended Methodist churches in Attica, Brandenton, Fla. and Covington. She was active in the United Methodist Women, Psi Iota Xi Sorority and PEO. While in Bradenton, Martha was chairperson of the Senior Services Activities Committee and played bridge in several clubs. After moving to Covington, she was active in the UMYF’s Dial-A-Helper Program and 3-on-3 basketball tournaments. She was always willing to lend a hand, to listen, or offer a word of encouragement. She was an avid reader, often reading or listening to a book a day and corresponded with family and friends weekly. Surviving, are: a daughter, Dr. Sara (Gary) Wheeler of Covington; two grandchildren, Nathan and Lori Wheeler, whom she dearly loved; and a sister, Gladys Jager. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Thelma “Tee” Fisher and Loretta McCollum; and one brother, Frank Fisher. Visitation on Thursday, June 22 from 5-8 p.m. at Maus Funeral Home and one hour prior to service at the church. Service on Friday at Lynn Friends Church, east of Russiaville on SR 26, Friday, June 23, 11 a.m. with Pastor Oscar Mathura officiating. Interment in New London Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Covington Public Library. – jlr
