COVINGTON — Freeman L. Smith, 66, rural Covington, died at 4:45 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2003 at his home, having battled Parkinson's disease 26 years. He was born Sept. 20, 1936 in Bloomington, Ill., the son of Lyle and Vivian (Etcheson) Smith. He married Anne M. Ricketts April 5, 1958 in Salem Church, Covington. She survives. He was a 1954 graduate of Covington High School, attended Mississippi State University and Georgia Tech. He returned to Covington in 1987 from Drakesville, Iowa. He served in the U. S. Air Force, was service manager for Allis Chalmers Corporation West Coast Division and later was a consultant, designer, manufacturer of agricultural machinery and accessories, He was a member of Dixon Community Church, Dixon, Calif. Survivors, besides the wife, include: a daughter, Sabrina Smith, Covington; two brothers, Jerald (Janice) Smith, West Point, Miss. and Craig (Sheila) Smith, Benton, Ark.; a sister, Janet Smith, Dayton, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday in Shelby Funeral Home, Covington, with Paul Ziebart officiating. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Covington. – jlr
