SMITH, Nellie Lighty

Mrs. Nellie Smith, wife of Eli Smith died on the eve of her 74th birthday anniversary at her home in Hillsboro at 10:30 Saturday evening.  Mrs. Smith had suffered from paralysis for the past two years and had been seriously ill for two weeks.
She had been a life resident of Fountain County and her death was the first in their immediate family in 51 years.  Mrs. Smith was the daughter of John and Nancy Plunkett Lighty and was born Nov 16, 1873. On
Sept 9, 1896 she was married to Eli Smith and they resided on a farm in the vicinity of Newtown for several years. After retiring from farming they moved to HIllsboro where they have resided for several years.  She
was a member of the Union Christian Church near Newtown.  She was the last survivor of a family of 17 children.  Surviving besides the husband are one son William J. Smith of near Portland Arch; two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Adkins of Perrysville; and Mrs. Delcie Ireland of Danville Ill; four grandchildren and one great grandson.   --- kbz
