Elmer B. Walker, 67, of Chanute, father of Monroe Walker, foreman of the Thayer News, passed away Tuesday evening, June 18, at 8 p.m. at his family home in Chanute, following a long illness from which there was little if any chance of recovery. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the Wilson Funeral Home in Chanute, followed by another brief service at the Thayer Cemetery upon the arrival of the funeral cortege here. Monroe Walker, who had been expecting the bad news at any time during the last two or three weeks, left immediately for Chanute when he received the death message Tuesday evening. The deceased was a former Thayer boy, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Eli Walker, who for years resided on a farm at the southwest edge of Thayer and there reared their family. Mr. and Mrs. Eli Walked passed away in the year 1908. For twenty-six years Elmer Walker was a teacher in the schools of Neosho County and for the next twenty-five was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad at Chanute. He was well known throughout the county and leaves scores of friends here, at Chanute, and elsewhere in this vicinity. The deceased leaves a widow, eight children, three step-children, three brothers, and one sister besides a number of grandchildren and other relatives. The children are Mrs. Bessie Waggoner, Mrs. Jennie Goltry, Miss Martha Walker, all of Chanute, Mrs. Bertha Smith of Neodesha, Roy of Cleveland, Ohio, Fred and Harry of Altoona, Kansas. The step-children are Mrs. Edith Oswald and Herbert McMillan of Yates Center, Kansas, and Leo of the home address. The surviving brothers and sisters are: S.B. Walker of Crawfordsville, Indiana, who was with his brother during his declining days; Mrs. Mary Yerkes of Covington, Indiana; W.G. Walker, Los Angeles, California; and Monroe Walker, Chanute. The Thayer News joins with the many friends of the family in Thayer in extending the deepfelt sympathy to the family in this, its hour of darkness. Son of Eli and Mariah Dooby Walker.
