Newtown – Mrs. Bessie S. Whiteside, 94, of Newtown, died at 9:46 a.m. Wednesday in Community Hospital, Williamsport.  She had been in failing health several years. Born in Newtown, Oct 2, 1890, she attended Newtown HS and lived here most of her life. She was married May 7, 1917 in Newtown to James S. Whiteside, a pharmacist. He formerly owned a pharmacy here and later worked at several drugstores in the area. He died Nov 6, 1981.  Mrs. Whiteside was a member of Newtown Community Church. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. John (Martha Jean) Meahl of Blue Springs, Mo; two sons, Harold N. Whiteside of Oakland, Calif and James E. Whiteside of Santa Cruz, Calif; a sister, Mrs. George (Belle) Lawton and one brother, Harold Shultz both of Newtown. – kbz

Whiteside, Mrs. Bessie S.  – Visitation 4-9 p.m. Friday, Crumley-Williams Funeral Home, Hillsboro. Service there 2 p.m. Saturday, the Rev. MD Sivley officiating. Interment Newtown Cemetery. Surviving are six grandchildren and six great grandchildren .A sister preceded in death.
