OTTWELL CHAPEL CEMETERY

The Ottwell Chapel cemetery is located on Carolina Trace Road, south of the junction with Cox Road in Section 25 of Whitewater Township, Franklin County, Indiana. It is behind the former site of the Ottwell Chapel Church. We have access to the original membership ledger for the church records; the name at the top of the ledger sheets varies between Otwell and Ottwell. We've seen it spelled both ways in old local newspapers. We chose to spell Ottwell with two (2) "t"s to more equally represent both the Otto and the Hollowell families who deeded the land off their adjoining farms.

Only a few of the taller stones are visible from the road, as the cemetery slopes down toward the west. The former churchyard east of the cemetery has usually been kept mowed. A group of volunteers cleared away trees and brambles in about 1995, but by Spring 1998, this cemetery was badly in need of maintenance. By November 1998, the entire lot had been cleared of briars making it possible to mow from the road to the back fence.

In April 1999, Merle and Ruth Schlemmer attended a three-day workshop to learn the techniques of historic cemetery preservation from Jim and Minxie Fannin. In May 1999, restoration of the Ottwell cemetery was begun.

By June 11, 1999, most of the stones had been cleaned, reset and repaired. With the help of Leroy Wiwi and his indispensible tractor, three of the largest bases were moved aside in order to level and prepare new bases.

This list includes all the stones that have been located, as well as some stones which were on the DAR list but have not yet been located in the cemetery, and some burials recorded in Franklin County death records. Absence of a location code in this list indicates we have not yet found the stone. As information known changes this list is revised.
