Cassie M. Couch



Cassie M. Couch, 81 years old, of 18011 McGuire Ridge Road, Laurel, died at 8:05 p.m., Wednesday, July 29, in Fayette Memorial Hospital, Connersville, where she had been a patient since Sunday. She had been a resident of Caroleton Manor for a year, and had been in failing health for two years.

She was born March 11, 1917, in Kentucky, one of twelve children of William and Rosie (McIntosh) Fox. In 1938, she was married in Metamora to William Couch of Clay County, Kentucky, and they lived in the Metamora area for 54 Years. Mrs. Couch was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Brookville.

Surviving are one daughter, Geraldine Swearingen of New Castle; five sons, Marion,Couch of Cherokee, Alabama, Thomas Couch, Bill Couch and Duane Couch, all of Metamora, and Michael Couch of Connersville; 23 grandchildren and 23 great-grand- children; four sisters, Dorcas Woodson, Chestna Jackson, Theresa Raines and Beulah Cummins; and a brother, Charles Fox.

Preceding her in death were her husband, who died January 27, 1991; one granddaughter, five sisters and one brother.

Funeral services were officiated by Rev. Troy Bishop on Saturday, August 1, at Emmanuel Baptist Church, followed by burial in Laurel North Cemetery. Her family requests that memorials be directed to the Emmanuel Baptist Church. Miller Funeral Home of Connersville handled arrangements.





Drexell Hignite



Drexell Hignite, age 78, of 374 West County Road 200 North, Rushville, died Wednesday, July 29, at Fayette Memorial Hospital,Connersville, after an illness of several weeks.

He was born October 11, 1919, in Clark County, Kentucky, to Charles and Nona (Berryman) Hignite both of whom precede him in death. He was a graduate of the former Orange High School and had farmed for many years in the Orange community. As an Army --veteran of World War II, he was stationed in Greenland and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a member of the Fayette County Farm Bureau and had driven a Fayette County school bus for 14 years. Mr. Hignite enjoyed guns,trap-shooting and hunting.

Survivors include his wife, the former Gwyneth A. Geis, whom he married June 9, 1951, in Brookville; four daughters, Mrs. Richard (Cynthia S.) Schroeder of the Orange community, Mrs. Benji (Lynette A.) Richardson of Glenwood, Mrs. Bill (Melinda J.) Gatesof Rushville and Mrs. Tom (AmyM.) Christie of Rushville; one brother, Hugh Thomas Hignite of Connersville; two sisters, Blanche Coltrane of the Columbia area and Sophia Stevens of Sarcoxie, Missouri; nine grandchildren, Matthew and Laura Schroeder, Krista and Eric Gates, Megan Richardson, and Brian, Adam, Brent and Conner Christie.

He was preceded in death by two infant sons, Jeffrey J. and Eric D.. Hignite, and one brother, Estill Hignite.

Funeral services were held Saturday, August 1, at Showalter- Blackwell Funeral Home, Myers Chapel in Connersville. He was laid to rest in Orange Cemetery, Fayette County, where military graveside rites were offered by the Fayette County Veterans Council. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fayette Memorial Hospital Foundation or to the Fayette County Heart Association.





Robert H. Lambert



Robert H. Lambert, of Brookville, died at Brookville Healthcare Center, on Tuesday, July 28. He was 84 years old.

He was born July 17, 1914, in Franklin County. He was married to the former Bertha Handley, who died in 1970. Mr. Lambert was employed at Fernald for 17 years, had farmed in Franklin County.and had last been employed at Dairy Cottage. He lived in Franklin County most of his life.

He is survived by one daughter, Roberta "Bertie" Turner of Brookville; and one grandson, Rob Turner of Louisville, Kentucky. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Joe, Howard and Oliver Lambert; and two sisters, Frances Largent and Christie Hertel.

The funeral, officiated by Audley Turner, was held Friday, July 31, at-Phillips and Meyers Funeral Home. He was laid to rest in Maple Grove Cemetery. His family asks that memorials be directed to Brookville Healthcare Center activities fund.





Mary Roberts



Mary Roberts, of Batesville, passed away at the age of 67, on Thursday, July 30, at Margaret Mary Community Hospital, Batesville.

She was born in Ripley County on November 13, 1930, to Elza and Cecelia (Riehic) Sowder. She married Norbert Faust and he preceded her in death on February 24, 1966, and then married Christopher "Lee" Roberts who died September 19,1990. She was survived by one daughter, Doris Brandes of Batesville; one sister, Verna Alt of Venice, Florida; and four grandchildren.

The funeral for Mrs. Roberts was held Tuesday, August 4, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Batesville, with Father Al Hudepohl, O.F.M., officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. The American Diabetes Association and Batesville Rescue 10 Lifesquad is accepting monetary donations in her memory. Weigel Funeral Home handled arrangements.





Joseph Streit



Joseph Fredrick Streit, Jr., of Harrison, Ohio, died on Tuesday, July 28, at Franciscan, Western Hills Campus, after a brief illness. He was 83 years old.

He was born in Dent, Ohio, to Joseph, Sr. and Selma (Koebinsky) Streit on March 5, 1915. On November 21, 1940, he married the former Bethuma Jolly, and she survives. Mr. Streit was an auctioneer and had been active in many areas of 4-H.

Besides his wife, he is survived his daughters, Joan (Mrs. Charles) Koch of Brookville, Carolyn Roehrig of Harrison, Ohio, Joyce (Mrs. Francis) Lake of Cedar Grove; his sons, Joseph (and wife, Jan) Streit III of Bath and Gustave (and wife, Gail) Streit of Clarksville, Tennessee; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mr. Streit was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Martin Streit, and a grandson, Aaron W. Loos.

The funeral was held Saturday, August 1, at Minges Funeral Home, Harrison, Ohio. He was laid to rest in Miamitown Cemetery, Miamitown, Ohio. Pallbearers included bis grandsons, Jeffery Koch, Nicholas Koch, Matthew Lake, Nathan Lake, Dennis Streit and Jason Streit. The family requests that monetary contributions in Mr. Streit's name be made to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church building fund, Harrison, Ohio.





Elnora J. Webber



Elnora J. Webber, age 67, of Batesville, died Saturday morning, August 1, at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where she had been a patient since Friday. She had been under a physician's care, but her death was unexpected.

She was born September 14, 1930 in Peoria, Illinois, one of two children of Clarence and Vivian (Dagley) Barrett. On June 27, 1948, she was married in Oxford, Ohio, to John Webber, Jr. They had farmed in the Oxford area and also in Franklin County, where they had resided since 1959. Mr. Webber died August 15, 1993. Mrs. Webber retired from Hil-Rom at Batesville in 1991.

Survivors include five children, Johnny Webber of Liberty, Donna Webber of Batesville, Mrs. George (Patricia) Moster of Connersville, Daryle Webber of Cape Coral, Florida and Rick Webber of Batesville; six grandchildren; a brother, Clarence Barrett of Camden, Ohio; two nephews and one niece.

Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 5, in Miller Funeral Home, 1704 Grand Avenue, Connersville. Burial will take place in the Laurel North Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Association.





Ruth Hedrick



Ruth Hedrick, of Batesville, 79 years old, died at her daughter's home in Batesville, on Wednesday,August 5.

She was born to Finley and Rosie (Roberts) Hubbard on January 12, 1919, in Manchester, Kentucky. On June 5, 1938, she became the wife of Velmer Hedrick in London, Kentucky. He died on June 25, 1998. Mrs. Hedrick worked as a homemaker.

Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Dan Fenske of Batesville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Sarah Hedrick of Clermont, Kentucky, and David and Diane Hedrick of Milroy; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, one brother, one half- brother and one grandson.

Her funeral was conducted Saturday, August 8, at Meyers Funeral Home in Batesville, with Ron Elliot officiating. She was interred in Laurel North Cemetery, Laurel. Memorials may be given to Home Health Care in Batesville.





Alma Knecht



Alma Elizabeth Knecht, age 80, 10072 Oxford Pike, Brookville, died Friday, August 7, 1998, at her residence.

Born February 12, 1918, in Franklin County, she was the daughter of John and Apolonia Simmermeyer Hildebrand. She graduated in 1939 from Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing; however, she spent most of her life in Franklin County as a homemaker. In 1940, she was married to Charles Knecht in St.Peters.

Survivors include her husband, Charles; two daughters, Janet Deutsch and Joyce Lovins, both of Brookville; one son, John Knecht of Denver, Colorado; 11 grand- children and two great- grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two grandsons and one infant brother.

Visitation was held Sunday, August 9, at Phillips & Meyers Funeral Home with a Rosary service beginning at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 10, at St. Michael Catholic Church with Msgr. Louis Schumacher officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Michael School Building Fund.





August Knecht



Augusta C. Knecht, age 91, of 10772 S. State Road 3, Milroy, died August 9,1998, in a traffic accident on U.S. 52 in Franklin County.

She was born September 11, 1906, in Franklin County, the daughter of Bernard and Louisa Moorman Schwegman. On January 12, 1927, she was manied to Albert L. Knecht at St. Mary's of the Rock Church in Franklin County and spent her life as a homemaker and mother. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Survivors include six sons, Donald A. Knecht of Brookville, Albert Knecht, Jr. of Greensburg, Marvin Knecht of Tega Cay, South Carolina, Bruce Knecht and James Knecht, both of Shelbyville, and Richard Knecht of Greenfield; three daughters, Carol Reed of Greensburg, Dolores Enneking of Oldenburg, and Marilyn Lanning of Brookville; one brother, Arnold (Mike) Schwegman, and two sisters, Loretta Enneking and Dolores Hohman, all of Franklin County; 48 grandchildren; 62 great- grandchildren; and two great-great- grandchildren.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert, on February 22, 1996; one son, Delrnar Knecht; six brothers and one sister.

Visitation will be held from 12 noon until 9 p.m. today at the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home in Greensburg. Rosary will be prayed at 9 p.m. Funeral services for Mrs. Knecht will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday, August 13, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greensburg with Rev. Steve Schaftlein officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Decatur County Hospice.





Delmar Knecht



Delmar R. Knecht, age 63, 719 S. Michigan Avenue, Greensburg, died Sunday, August 9, 1998, in Franklin County.

He was born September 28, 1934, in Franklin County to Albert L. and Augusta Schwegman Knecht. He graduated from Milroy High School and then served in the U.S. Army. On June 15, 1957, he was married to the former Janet Lee Drennen. Mr. Knecht was a farmer and was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church and also the Greensburg Country Club.

Survivors include two sons, Perry Knecht of Seymour and John Knecht of , Greensburg; three daughters, Nancy Olson of Columbus, Laura A. Peters of Greensburg, and Pamela Sue Krekeler of Batesville; six brothers, Donald Knecht of Brookville, Albert Knecht, Jr. of Greensburg, Marvin Knecht of Tega Cay, South Carolina, Bruce Knecht and Jim Knecht, both of Shelbyville, and Dick Knecht of Greenfield; three daughters, Dolores Enneking of Oldenburg, Marilyn Lanning of Brookville, and Carol Reed of Greensburg; nine grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren.

Funeral services will begin at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, August 13, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Steve Schaftlein officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 12 noon until 9 p.m. today at the Gilliland- Howe Funeral Home in Greensburg where a prayer service will begin at 9 P.M. Memorial contributions may be made to the P.J. Metz Fund.





Janet Knecht



Janet Knecht, age 61, 719 S. Michigan Avenue, Greensburg, died Sunday, August 9, 1998, in Franklin County.

She was born June 22, 1937, in Indianapolis, the daughter of Gerald L. and Martha Bokelman Drennen. A graduate of Greensburg High School, Mrs. Knecht was a sales person at Taff Furniture in Greensburg. On June 15, 1957, she was married to Delmar R. Knecht. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Delta Theta Tau Sorority and the Greensburg Country Club.

Survivors include her mother, Martha Drennen of Greensburg; two sons, Perry Knecht of Seymour and John Knecht of Greensburg; three daughters, Nancy Olson of Columbus, Laura Peters of Greensburg, and Pamela Sue Krekeler of Batesville; two sisters, Becky Drennen and Margaret Leyenberger, both of Indianapolis; nine grandchildren and four step- grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father and one nephew, Matthew Smith.

Funeral services for Mrs. Knecht will begin at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, August 13, 1998, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greensburg with Father Steve Schaftlein officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home in Greensburg from 12 noon until 9 p.m. today where a Memorial Service will be held by the Delta Theta Tau Sorority and a prayer service at 9 P.M. Memorial contributions may be made to the P.J. Metz Fund.





Charles R. Scott



Charles Robert "C. R." Scott, II, age 19, died Friday, July 3 1, at Henry County Memorial Hospital in New Castle, after a lengthy illness.

He was born August 13, 1978, to Charles Robert and Wanda (Arthur) Scott. He attended Blue River High School and worked at State Plastic Recycling Company. He was a member of Brown Road Church of God.

Survivors include his parents; a sister, Doris Denise Scott; matemal grandparents, Gene and Doris Arthur; two aunts, Glenda Neafus of Brandenburg, Kentucky and Lola Ann Crain of Rushville; three uncles, Michael and Larry Arthur, both of New Castle, and Bill Scott of Connersville.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Blanche and Edwin Scott, formerly of Andersonville.

Funeral services were held Sunday, August 2,at Main and Frame, Blue River Chapel with Bob Tinsman officiating. Burial was in Mt. Summit Cemetery.





Roberta Waltz



Roberta (Bertie) G. Waltz, age 83,10183 Whitcomb Road, Brookville, died Monday, August 10, at her residence.

Born May 12, 1915, in West Harrison, she was the daughter of Leslie and Bertha (Wesling) Stokes. On April 28, 1934, she was married to Everett Waltz in Bright, Indiana, and lived most of her life in Franklin County. She was a member of the Whitcomb United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She had also taught Sunday School.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Quentin (Patricia) Lanning of Brookville and Mrs. Robert (Marilyn) Frensemeier of Greensburg; one son, Loren Waltz and his wife, Wanda, of Brookville; eight grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Everett who passed away on March 21, 1986; one sister, Hazel Campbell; and several aunts and uncles.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Phillips & Meyers Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 13, at the funeral home with Rev. Carl Dixon officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Whitcomb United Methodist Church.





Edward L. Bossert



Edward L. Bossert, 77, of 223 East Seminary Street, Liberty, died at 1:25 p.m., Thursday, in Reid Memorial Hospital in Richmond, where he had been a patient since July 9, 1998. He had been in failing health for several months.

Born February 15, 192 1, in Franklin County, one of five children of Perry and Ada Redelman Bossert, and had lived in Union County for the past 50 years.. He served during WWII with the U.S. Army Military Police during the Allied occupation of Japan. On December 25, 1950, he was married in Liberty to Jessie (Byrd) Cooley, who survives. For many years, he owned his own farm drainage business. In 1964, he was employed by Heinold Hog Market, where he worked for 28 years. Currently, he was employed by Medrico of Liberty. He was a member and longtime deacon of the First Baptist Church of Connersville.

Survivors besides his wife Jessie, include two daughters, Mrs Roland (Joan) Kuhlenbeck, and Mrs. Barry (Ruth E.) Bryant both of Liberty; a son, Ralph Cooley of Colorado Springs, Colorado; six grandchildren; five great grand- children; one sister, Mrs. Charles (Grace) Estes of Richmond; and a number of nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.

Funeral services were conducted by Dr. Dan McCollough on Monday, August 17 at First Baptist Church of Connersville, with burial following in Dale Cemetery. Visitation was Sunday at Miller Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Deacon's Fund.





Keith Brier



Keith Brier, 74 years old, of 5024 Flinn Road, Brookville, died on Friday, August 14, at Oxford View Nursing Center in Oxford, Ohio.

He was born to Earl T. and C. Hortense (Flinn) Brier on December 10, 1923, in Springfield Township (Franklin County), and he remained a Franklin County resident throughout most of his life. On June 24, 1950, he and the former Anne C. Allen were united in marriage in Bedford, Ohio. Mr. Brier served three years in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He attended Springfield School in Franklin County, however, he graduated from Middletown High School in Middletown, located in Henry County. He was a member of the Whitcomb United Methodist Church and a 51 year member of the Masonic Lodge in Middletown (Henry County).

He is survived by his wife, Anne A. Brier, of Brookville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael K. and Michelle Brier of Brookville and Donald E. and Marcia Brier of San Francisco, California; one brother-in-law, Gordon P. Allen of Bedford, Ohio; and three grand- children, Michael Scott Brier, Matthew Casey Brier and Molly Anne Brier.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Duane J. Brier, who died in 1980.

The funeral service was held at Phillips and Meyers Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 18, with the Rev. Philip Brenneman officiating. Burial followed in Springfield Cemetery, Brookville. Those serving as pallbearers were Cletus Seufert, Tim Rosenberger, Ross Fain, Charles Eggleston, Paul Chaney, Ralph Jester, Jr., Dusty Hill and Claton Brack. Honorary pallbearers included Carlos Miles, John McClure, Ralph Jester, Sr. and Clyde McCracken. The Whitcomb United Methodist Church and Drewersburg Volunteer Fire Department are accepting memorial donations.





Sister Mary Clare Ennis



Sister Mary Clare Ennis, O.S.F., 86 years old, died Friday, August 14, at the St. Francis Infirmary, Oldenburg.

She was born in Dover on January 8, 1912, the daughter of Christopher and Emilie (Aug) Ennis. She entered the convent on December 8, 1932 and made her final vows on July 2, 1938. Sister Mary Clare taught at St. Michael School in Brookville, besides several other schools in Indiana, Ohio and Missouri.

She is survived by two sisters, Mary Murtaugh and Rita Widoiff, both of Guilford, and one brother, Frank Ennis, also of Guilford.

Father Raymar Middendorf, O.F.M., conducted the funeral service on Monday, August 17, at the Motherhouse Chapel of Sisters of St. Francis in Oldenburg. She was laid to rest in St. Francis Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Sisters of St. Francis. Weigel Funeral Home handled arrangements.





Clyde D. Johnson Sr.



Clyde D. Johnson, Sr., formerly of Metamora, died at Caroleton Manor Nursing Home in Connersville on Saturday, August 15, at the age of 82.

Born June 13, 1916, in Jackson County, Kentucky, he was the son of Bradley and Amanda (Boggs) Johnson. He lived in Franklin County most of his life. Mr. Johnson served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and receiving a Purple Heart at Pearl Harbor. He was a member of the American' Legion. and Veterans of Foreign Wars (V.F.W.). He was married to the former Bettie Kolb, who preceded him in death on July 23, 1982.

He is survived by two sons, Clyde Johnson, Jr. of Metamora and Donald Holcomb of Evansville; two daughters, Sandra K. Johnson of Orlando, Florida and Cindy Cain of Columbus, Ohio; four sisters, Grace Bowling and Rhoda Moore, both of Connersville, Rena Metcalf and Sophie Gilbert, both of Kentucky; one brother, Roy Johnson of Kentucky; five grandchildren and three great- grandchildren.

Besides his wife, those preceding him in death were one brother, one granddaughter and one infant sister.

Msgr. Louis Schumacher conducted the funeral on Tuesday, August 18, at Phillips and Meyers Funeral Home. He was laid to rest in St. Michael Catholic Cemetery, where military graveside rites were offered by Bernard Hurst Post 77 of the American Legion. Mr. Johnson's family requests that monetary contributions, in his name, be directed to the American Cancer Society.





Zola E. Kroner



Zola Elizabeth Kroner, a resident of Heritage House in Greensburg, and formerly residing near New Alsace, passed away in Decatur County Memorial Hospital, Greensburg, on Saturday, August 15. She was 91 years old.

Born February 25, 1907, in Milan, she was the daughter of John George and Josephine Ann (Gettell) Greiner. She was married to Harvey C. Kroner, who died in 1956. Mrs. Kroner worked as a homemaker and was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Hubbles Comer.

Surviving are one son, Bill Kroner of Sunman; one daughter, Marilyn Hammel of Baltic, Ohio; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The funeral is scheduled for Wednesday, August 19, at 1:30 p.m. (E.S.T.), at St. John Lutheran Church, Hubbles Comer. Dr. Daniel Leigh Nugent and Rev. David Hammel will officiate. Friends may call from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service at the church. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. Her family asks that memorial donations be directed to the building fund at St. John Lutheran Church or Sunman Area Life Squad. Cook Funeral Home of Sunman was in charge of arrangements.





Ruth Pflum



Ruth A. Pflum, age 78, 918 Franklin Avenue, Brookville, died Saturday, August 15, 1998, at McCullough-Hyde Memorial Hospital in Oxford, Ohio.

Born March 26, 1920, in Brookville to Clarence and Loretta(Hamann) Senefeld, she was a lifelong resident of Franklin County. On November 20, 1946, she was married to Ambrose Pflum and spent her life as a homemaker. She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church and a 50 year member of the Daughters of Isabella.

Survivors include two daughters, Patty Murphy of Brookville and Amy Pflum of Everton; one son Greg Pflum of Brookville; one sister, Ree S. Merrell of Brookville; one brother, Thomas Senefeld of Connersville; and three grand- children, Heidi Pflum, Amanda and Lori Murphy.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ambrose, who passed away in 1978.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Michael Catholic Church with, Msgr. Louis Schumacher officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation was held Tuesday evening, August 18, at Phillips & Meyers Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Franklin County E.M.S. or the American Heart Association.





Georgia Sandlin



Georgia Sandlin, 83 years old, of 1241 Fairfield Avenue, Brookville, died at her home on Thursday, August 13.

She was born May 10, 1915, in Owsley County, Kentucky, the daughter of Bud and Mary (Combs) Thomas. She became the wife of William "Bill" Sandlin on November 13, 1960, and lived most of her life in Franklin County. Mrs., Sandlin worked as a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Bill, of Brookville; two daughters, Eva Schoettelkotte of Oldenburg and Nancy Conner of Connersville; two sons, George Fields of Oldenburg and James Fields of Rhinelander, Wisconsin; five step- daughters, Loraine Willis of Martinsville, Barbara Day and Penny James, both of Brookville, Constance "Connie" Blakley of Connersville and Sonjia Daily of Brooksville, Florida; two step-sons, Billy Sandlin of Indianapolis and Jerry Sandlin of Brookville; 15 grandchildren, 12 step-grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 13 step-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents, four brothers, one sister, one son (Gary Fields), one grandchild, one great-grandchild and one step-grandchild.

The funeral was held on Monday, August 17, at Phillips and Meyers Funeral Home, with the Rev. Willie Russell officiating. Interment followed in Maple Grove Cemetery. John William Conner Memorial Scholarship Fund and Franklin County E.M.S. are accepting memorials.





Eller Broughton



Eller Broughton, 4011 East County Road 1100 North, Batesville, died at her home on Wednesday, August 19. She was 92 years of age.

She was born on October 7,1905, in Hammond, Kentucky, the daughter of Alec and Phoeme (Lazenby) Smith. She became the wife of Lee Broughton, who preceded her in death in 1983. Mrs. Broughton worked as a housewife and was a member of Berean Baptist Church, Batesville.

Surviving are seven sons, Russell and Carl, both of New Trenton,Mark and Randy, both of Milan, Charles of Sunman, Jim of Shelbyville, and Bufhard of Fort Worth, Texas; four daughters, Viola Mills of Dillsboro, Oda Vogt and Josie Roope of Batesville, Delora Lawrence of Indianapolis; two half- brothers, Grover Smith of Greensburg and Pearl Smith of Kentucky;39 grandchildren, 70 great-grandchildren and several great-great- grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons,Clyde "Bill" Broughton and Oscar Broughton; one brother and six sisters.

The funeral, officiated by Rev. Doug Bamforth, was held Saturday,August 22, at Cook Funeral Home in Sunman. Interment followed in Glen Haven Cemetery, located in Hanison, Ohio. Family members were chosen as pallbearers. Any memorial contributions may be directed to the Berean Baptist Church or a charity of the donor's choice.





Bertrand D. Klein



Bertrand D. Klein, 76 years old, of 306 North Fairground Street, Liberty, died Sunday morning, August 23, at his home.

He was born September 12, 1921, in Union County, to Louis and Pearl (Hoff) Klein. He was employed by Alcoa in Richmond for 21 years and retired due to illness in 1976. He had bought and sold furs and roots for the past 35 years. He married the former Shirley Huntington on August 1, 1943 in Union County. He was a member of Liberty Church of Christ, Liberty Country Club and a lifetime member of V.F.W. Post 1472. He had lived in the Union County area all his life. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Donald D. Klein of Central, South Carolina and Malcolm E. Klein of Connersville, four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be conducted at Showalter-Blackwell Funeral Home, Baker-Fosdick Chapel, Liberty, on Thursday, August 27, at 11 a.m., with Dwight Gillespie, of the Liberty Church of Christ, officiating. Interment will follow in the West Point Cemetery, Liberty, with military graveside rites by the Liberty V.F.W. and American Legion Posts. Friends may visit the funeral home from 5 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 26, where memorials may be made to the Liberty Church of Christ or the Liberty Country Club.





William F. Knecht



He was born in Paragould, Arkansas on October 20, 1921 and graduated from Hartford City High School in 1940. He served in the 145th Army Infantry from October 1942 to December 1945 during World War II, earning the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon and Bronze Star. He was an active member of St. Michael Catholic Church, the V.F.W., F.O.E., Knights of Columbus and Past Commander of American Legion Post 77. He retired from A.B. Beverage Company after 33 years of service.

He was the loving husband of Fern M. (Baney) Knecht for 51 years, and leaves behind cherished memories to his children, Marsha (and husband, Joel) Nathan of Wheaton, Illinois, Dale (and wife, Connie) Knecht of Connersville, Jacqueline (and husband, Robert) Fox of St. Leon, Steven (and wife, Barbara) Knecht of Rushville, and David (and wife, Susan) Knecht of Brookville; 16 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Catherine Hertel of Brookville and Emma Novak of Cleveland, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Anna (Schmitt) and Charles J. Knecht, and 15 brothers and sisters. Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Thursday, August 27, at Phillips and Meyers Funeral Home with mass at 10:30 a.m., at St. Michael Church on Friday, August 28. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Franklin County E.M.S.





Ray Liming



Ray Liming, 89, 1872 E. Contreras Pike, Liberty, Indiana, passed away Tuesday morning at his residence.

He was born November 8, 1908 in Franklin County, Indiana to John C. and Ada Doty Liming and lived in the Union County area all his life. He was a member of the Four Mile Church of the Brethren and was formerly a Union County Commissioner. He was a lifetime farmer and an avid fiddle player.

Survivors include 4 sons: Virgil K. Liming and John R. Liming, Liberty, Indiana, Harold E. Liming, Brookville, Ohio, Paul W. Liming, College Corner, Ohio, Three daughters: Joyce I. Napier, Liberty, Indiana, JoAnn Wehrley, Centerville, Indiana, Mary Esther Fites, Union, South Carolina (formerly of Roann, Indiana), a sister: Thelma Johnson, Liberty, Indiana, 14 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 2 great -great -grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Inez Sheets Liming who died in 1994 and a brother: William H. Liming who died in 1981. .Funeral services will be held at Showalter-Blackwell Funeral Home, Baker Chapel in College Corner, Ohio at 12 noon (Ohio Time) on Saturday, August 29. Rev. Clyde Hylton, pastor of his church will officiate. Burial will follow in College Corner Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 until 9 p.m. (Ohio Time) on Friday, August 28, where contributions may be made to the Four Mile Church of the Brethren or to the Reid Memorial Foundation for their hospice program.





Elizabeth Tragesser



Elizabeth K. Tragesser, formerly of Brookville, died on Sunday, August 23, at Crestview Park Care Center, Cincinnati, Ohio. She was 84 years old.

Born October 30, 1913, in Franklin County, she was the daughter of William and Catherine (Joreg) Tragesser. She lived most of her life in Franklin County and was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church. Miss Tragesser was a registered nurse.

She is survived by one sister, Wilma Holmes of Brookville, along with several nieces.

Preceding her in death were her parents; two brothers, Ambrose and Sylvester Tragesser; and one sister, Olivia Tragesser.

Msgr. Louis Schumacher officiated the funeral service on Tuesday, August 25, at St. Michael Catholic Church. She was then buried in the church cemetery. Saint Michael School is accepting memorial donations in her name. Phillips and Meyers Funeral Home assisted her family with arrangements.





Karen M. Victor



Karen M. Victor, age 51, passed away Friday, August 21, 1998, at the Brookville Health Care Center.

She was the daughter of the late Myles and Rose Marie (Schulte) Victor. She is survived by one brother, Joe Victor.

Visitation was held at Frederick Funeral Home in Cincinnati on Monday, August 24. Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, August 25, at St. James Church in White Oak.
