Note:  Inscription on "older" stone:  "IN MEMORY.OF.JAMES WHEELER who served in the revolutionary war five years & ten months & died the 2nd & buried with the honors of war 4th july 1849.Aged 90 year's"



Note:  Inscription on "newer" stone:  "Buried 4 Jul 1843; Served in the Revolutionary War 5 yrs 10 mos.; Monument dedicated July 4, 1926 by Patriotic organizations of Gibson County."

Husband of Emeline (LANE) WITHERALL.  Married 20 Aug 1887, in Pike Co., Indiana.  Son of Elisha B & Mary E (CHAMBERLAIN) WITHERALL.

The following inforamtion was supplied by his great-granddaughter
Brenda Craig, 5 Feb 2010.
"Morris Edwin Witherall is what is on his death certificate. Although
older relatives said his first name was Maurice and they called him Ed.
He married Emeline Lane 20th of Aug 1887 Pike County, Indiana.
On the marriage license his name is Edwin Witherell. They had nine
children around gibson and pike county, Indiana.He was born
24th Sept 1850 in West  Cornwall, Connecticut. He died
18th Mar 1919. at the county infirmary Gibson County, Indiana,
and is buried behind the  poor farm, but does not have a head stone. 
They lived in Patoka, Indiana."

Wheeler, James, and wife Elizabeth, Revolutionary pension application no. W-9887, Va. Service, James Wheeler applied 28 July 1818 from Gibson Co., Indiana, stating he was born in March 1758 or 1760.  He enlisted in Buckingham Co.,
Va., in Jan. or Feb. 1776 and served under Capt. Thomas Patterson in Col. Buckner�s Va. Regt.  He was at the Battles of Trenton, Princeton, and at the taking of Burgoyne.  On December 1777 he enlisted in Col. Lee�s Legion of Light Dragoons and was at Guilford.

          Elizabeth Wheeler, aged 80, applied for a pension on 6 September 1843 from Gibson Co., Indiana, and stated she was the widow of James Wheeler who died 2 July 1843.  She married to him on 21 Mar or 21 Jun 1786 in Buckingham Co., Va.  Her maiden name was Elizabeth Welch.  She stated she assisted in providing soldiers with clothing and food.

          John Wheeler and William R. King of Gibson Co., Ind., state on 1 Sept. 1843 that James Wheeler died 2 July 1843.

          James Wheeler was pensioned at $100.00 per annum.  Certificate no. 26713 was issued 2 May 1834, to take effect from 4 March 1831.�
