Marcia Ann (Simmons) Brewer, 72, of Columbus, IN, passed away at 1:38 a.m. Sunday, July 15, 2012, at Miller’s Merry Manor in Hope, IN, following a lengthy illness.

She was born May 19, 1940, in Oakland City, IN, to the late Arthur and Marie (Hensen) Simmons.

She was a graduate of
Oakland City High School in the class of 1958 and was an avid IU basketball fan. Marcia married Morris “Bud” Brewer on November 4, 1961, and he preceded her in death on February 4, 2011. She was also preceded in death by a son, Gary Gene Brewer.

Marcia lived everyday with a positive attitude. Even after learning of her diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, she chose to fight it rather than dwelling in negativity. Her positive outlook and uncommonly kind demeanor inspired many. She attended church regularly as a member of
First Baptist Church and led a devout Christian lifestyle. She loved spending time with her three grandchildren, whether it was teaching them piano or going on walks in the woods. Reflecting her selfless attitude, Marcia enjoyed making the people around her smile. One could often find her at any of the local nursing homes, playing the piano and visiting with the residents. She often played at Miller’s Merry Manor where she would spend her last days as a resident.

Marcia is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Jerilyn Brewer of Hartsville, IN; brothers, Jack Simmons of Oakland City, IN, and Larry Simmons of New Concord, KY; and a sister, Rae Couts of Phoenix, AZ. She is also survived by her special grandchildren, Jessica, Jenna and Jonah Brewer, and several nieces and nephews.
