George D. Harris 88, of Oakland City passed away on Monday August 13, 2012 at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh.

 

George was born on October 23, 1923 in Gibson County to Thurman and Edith (McCool) Harris, both deceased.

 

He was a United States Army Veteran who served in WWII in North Africa, Italy and the Philippine Islands. He was a member of the VFW Post 1147, the Oakland City Kiwanis, and also a member of the First General Baptist Church of Oakland City, where he served as a deacon. 

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ruth (Yates) Harris; daughter and son-in-law, Georgia (Jack) Wilkinson of Newburgh; son and daughter-in-law, Larry (Cynthia) Harris of Oakland City; 5 grandchildren, Jackie and Greg Wilkinson, Andrea Moore, Nicole Conder and Haley Holt; 8 great grandchildren, Chloe Bartley, Triston Wilkinson, Paxon Bartley, Chase Wilkinson, Mayson Moore, Parker Conder, Harper Holt and Hudson Holt; and 2 sisters, Ruth Aigner and Judy Parke. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 sisters, Lois Joel, Irma Strickland and Darlene Freudenberg; 6 brothers, William H., Thurman C. Jr, Jack, Thomas, Sherman and Jerry Harris. 

Funeral Services will be held at
10 a.m. on Friday, August 17, 2012 at First General Baptist Church in Oakland City, officiated by Rev. Larry Johnson and Rev. Terryl Almond. Burial will be at the Montgomery Cemetery in Oakland City.

 

Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. on Thursday at the Corn-Colvin Funeral Home in Oakland City and from 9 until 10 a.m. on Friday at the church. Military graveside services will be conducted by VFW Post 1147.
