Helen Kathryn (Spence) Sims, 97, went to be with her Lord on Jan. 4, 2013 at Parkview Care Center in Evansville.

 

Helen was born on June 15, 1915 in Coles County, Ill. the daughter of Beverly and Fannie (Adams) Spence.

 

She worked at Kick’s Cafe and Wimpy’s Cafe in Owensville in the 1950’s. 

She commented often that she loved the garden and orchards because she loved canning and if she had a hobby in her life it was canning fruits and vegetables. 

 

She was a member of the Maumee General Baptist Church for many years until they retired in the late 1970’s. They then made their home in Fort Branch and she attended the Fort Branch General Baptist Church. She had been in ill health for many years staying in her home until May of 2008, when she entered Parkview Care Center of Evansville.

 

She is survived by two daughters, Mary Nulton and Jean (Tony) Garrett of Evansville; six grandchildren, David Nulton of Austin, Texas, Mike Garrett of Mt. Vernon, Kathy (Albert) Shappell of Cynthiana, Jerry (Cathy) Garrett of Evansville, Tim (Kelly) Garrett of Evansville and Debra (Dave) Snyder of Wadesville: 14 great-grandchildren, Able and Olivia Nulton of Austin, Texas, Jennifer (Jason) Stiyer of Tampa, Fla., Jeremy (Jenni) Garrett of Mt. Vernon, Kallie and Jonathon Shappell of Cynthiana, Larry (Laura) Garrett of Evansville, Andy Garrett of Evansville, Sarah (Tim) Joy of Newburgh, Abby (Stephen) Collins of Evansville, Whitney (Curt) Farmer of Evansville, Josiah Garrett of Evansville, Mackenzie Garrett of Evansville and Katye Snyder, a student at Muncie; 10 great-great grandchildren, Jayden and Jaxson Stiyer, Austin, Ethan, Cambry and Kennedy Reiter, Rylan Garrett, Noah and Anna Collins and Peyton Farmer. 

 

Preceding Helen in death were her husband of 52 years, Charles E. Sims on Dec. 14, 1987 and her great-grandson, David Anthony Snyder on Sept. 20, 2005 at the age of 17; her parents; five brothers and three sisters. She was the last surviving member of a very large family.

 

Jean, Mary and Tony wish to thank the staff of Parkview Care Center and Dr. Uloth for their kind and loving care. A very special note of appreciation goes to Bonnie and Cookie who ministered to her needs and showed their love.

 

Services will be held Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Holders Funeral Home in Owensville with the Pastor Timothy Garrett officiating. Burial will be in the Maumee Cemetery.

 

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the service time at the funeral home.
