Betty (Dorsey) Smith, 98, of Princeton, passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at River Oaks Health Campus in Princeton.

She was born December 22, 1918 in Oscaloosa, MO to the late Frank E. and Mary E. (Sears) Dorsey.

She held a Bachelor’s Degree from KSU and did graduate work at Juilliard School of Music in New York. She was a member of Hillside United Methodist Church in Princeton and served as choir director for 56 years. She was a member of P.E.O. for 75 years, organized P.E.O. Chapter CD in Princeton and had served as Indiana State President. She had been a Pink Lady at Gibson General Hospital, Salvation Army Auxiliary member, served on Dollars for Scholars, member of Cosmos Literary Organization, served 7 years as a trustee for University of Evansville, served 15 years as co-chair of Arts Council of Gibson County, Morning Etude Music member. In 1989 the Betty Smith Scholarship was established for students pursuing a career in the Arts. Betty and her husband, Zeke were awarded the Celebration of Leadership Award in Arts and Education in 1998, the Southwestern Indiana’s Art Patrons of the Year in 2000 and the Lifetime Service Award for supporting the Arts in Gibson County in 2004.

Betty is survived by her 4 children, Cindy Hofman (Phil) of Princeton, Scott D. Smith (Karen) of Patoka, Maddy Gay Mitchem of Princeton and Craig “Zeke” Smith (Jancey) of Princeton; 16 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Robert Dorsey and her husband of 67 years, Zeke Smith on February 22, 2010.

Funeral service will be held at 12 noon Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Hillside United Methodist Church, 828 W Archer Road, Princeton, Indiana 47670, with Rev. Jarmon Perkins officiating. Burial will follow at Columbia White Church Cemetery in Princeton. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the hour of service on Saturday at the church. Colvin Funeral Home in Princeton has been entrusted with the arrangements.
