HARRISON / LAWSON / KNOWLES

Am interested in sharing information about the KNOWLES family members in Posey Co., Indiana. My Grandfather was Stephen Thomas KNOWLES, b. 22 Sept. 1876, son of William J. KNOWLES, b. 21 Mar 1850 and Sarah J. HARRISON b. 26 March 1858. They had five children. William J.'s father's name was Thomas, b. 11 Dec. 1823 and he married Anna Mariah LAWSON. They had nine children. I think the KNOWLES family came to Indiana from Greene Co., GA. I have been able to find this information and know it to be true up to Thomas. I have information, but am not sure it is correct, on Thomas' father, as I have not been able to put them together any further back in Georgia. Any help would be appreciated.

EMBREE / FLEMING / JOHNSTON / KELL / MONTGOMERY / NEELY / WITHERSPOON / WRIGHT

On your Gibson county page, Miscellaneous Items, you have Martha Robertson marrying a JOHNSTON and then Joseph NEELY. I'm a descendant and as far as I know her middle name was Robertson, and her maiden name JOHNSTON. In fact, we have info from another descendant stating she was the daughter of Thomas JOHNSTON of Fairfax County, VA.

Also --

If you're interesting in adding info to your Gibson County web pages, I have biographies of the following people --

Joseph NEELY -- see http://www.wizard.net/~aldonna/jn.htm John Isaac NEELY -- see http://www.wizard.net/~aldonna/jin.htm Thomas ('Purty Old Tom') MONTGOMERY -- see http://www.wizard.net/~aldonna/tm.htm Isaac MONTGOMERY -- see http://www/wizard.net/~aldonna/im.htm

These names could also be added to your military history --

REVOLUTIONARY WAR -- Joseph NEELY, Thomas MONTGOMERY WAR of 1812 -- John Isaac NEELY, Isaac MONTGOMERY

I'm also going through some newspaper articles given to me by my grandfather's step-sister. She is not a blood relative of mine, but I hate to throw the info away since I know some genealogist may be interested. I have an obituary of Mrs. Mary WITHERSPOON. Her Gibson Co. relatives include John KELL, Joseph FLEMING, Anna WRIGHT, and David Franklin EMBREE.

My grandmother, Vera Louise BATES, b 10 Oct 1900, in Gibson County, was the daughter of George and Maude BATES. I do not know Maude's maiden name. I can remember being told that George had something to do with the railroad. The Gibson County Health Department does not have a recorded birth certificate on file. Gibson County is recorded on Vera's death certificate. I never heard anyone mention whether or not Vera had any brothers and/or sisters. She married Victor Fox MILLER, from Terre Haute, In, I believe in her late twenties. My father was born in Terre Haute, In, when she was 31 years old. I do not know when or where she was married. FT. GIBSON / McCOLE

I came across your name in the US GENWEB site and I am hoping that you can steer me in the right direction. I have been trying to find out more information about my g-grandfather who was born in Gibson, County. So far I have come up with very little. I have spent a whole day at the Allen County Library in Fort Wayne hoping to find my missing link. Unfortunately, the library had little to no information that can help me.

I am looking for more information on Henry McCOLE. I have records that say he was born in Princeton, Gibson County, Indiana sometime around 1863 or 1864. Other than that, I can't seem to find out much more. I was hoping to get birth records and census records while I was at Fort Wayne. But no luck.

Can you direct me to someone who might be able to help me with records in Princeton? And can you tell me anything about FORT GIBSON's role during the Civil War? I have family tales that might have a connection between Fort Gibson and my family. However, as of right now, I looking for the "needle in the haystack".

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Eugene Clark sherry@net-link.net

DAVIS / DODD / JOHNSON / KNOUS / LAWRENCE / POINTER / SANDAGE / SANDIDGE / SEXTON / SHARP / YATES

The main surname I search is SHARP. I have a John SHARP marrying Temperance SHARP 10/20/1825 that is driving me crazy. Info on those two people could give me a big break in solving a family mystery. This was a Gibson County marriage.

Besides that family I search for info on any relatives of Joel E. JOHNSON and Elizabeth B. DAVIS. Then there is a DODD family whose daughter, Nancy, married Henry H. KNOUS in Illinois. Most of my families ended up in Illinois with jaunts through Kentucky with Adair, Metcalfe, Casey, and Barren counties most prolific.

The true related names most associated with SHARP are YATES, SEXTON, LAWRENCE and POINTER.

I finally found what I was looking for and it is interesting that the name is SANDAGE. I have a marriage between J. T. YATES and Mary W. SANDAGE. They had a son, Francis M. YATES, born 10/1861 in Metcalfe Co, KY. Now I have tied the SANDAGE and YATES names together and it makes it much more interesting. Do you have anything on this Mary W. SANDAGE. Thanks again, Rick Richard Sergeant lobosolo@halcyon.com

My reply to him:

Remember that since John SHARP and Temperance married in 1825 in Gibson Co, IN then they would be eligible as one of the Indiana Pioneers -- check the Indiana Historical Society newsletters and see if you can't find them listed -- usually it has the person who has "proved" them, and who is also tracing the line. I am trying to find a lost family. JENNIE E.PATTERSON.> Who is her father? b-Mar 1855 Indiana > what Co? Married: CHARLES W. BENTON on Oct 20, 1881 in Gibson Co. IN.> I tried to find PATTERSON on early census records in Gibson Co. but no luck. Jennie's mother's name is SAPHONIA SNOW. > Found on census as head of house, Charles and Jennie were living with her. Is SNOW her maiden name or did she remarry? SAPHONIA SNOW was also born in Indiana, if I could find out her maiden name maybe I could find her parents.

BOLIN / CAVENDER / COX / DAVIDSON / DAVIS / HOAGLAND / LAFAYETTE / McCONNELL / THOMAS / THRASHER / VAUGHN / WILSON / Wilson's History of Dubois County, IN

I am trying to get descendant information on the following families:

My gggg-grandfather Charles CAVENDER, his wife Deborah (DAVIS of NY) CAVENDER (married about 1791 VT) and 7 of their children (ages 9 to 30 ) settled in Perry Co. IN about 1823 next to the Ohio River near where the dam is now located. James CAVENDER, one of the sons, is stated to be the person that gave shelter to the Marquis de Lafayette after his steamboat accident in 1825. I think that the wife of Benjamin VAUGHN. the first person to file a legal land claim in Perry Co., Joanna (DAVIS of NY) VAUGHN, may have been related to Deborah CAVENDER, for the CAVENDERs settled on land next to the VAUGHNs. All 7 of the CAVENDER children that had moved to Perry Co. married there, with marriages to DAVIDSON (3 marriages), McCONNELL, THRASHER, HOAGLAND, and to THOMAS. From the tax maps that I have seen, by about 1835 the CAVENDER children and their spouses owned most of the property from east of Lafayette Springs to present day Tell City. About 1830 the eldest son William became a Justice of the Peace. About 1835 some of the CAVENDER children began selling their property to coal mining interests. William and his younger brother Anson (my ggg-grandfather) sold out in entirety and moved to Dubois County in the mid-1830s (may have had something to do with the Ohio River flood of 1832 ??? ). William and Anson prospered in Dubois Co, and in their older years, William, James, and Anson were all known as "Judge CAVENDER". The Cavenders that remained in Perry County (James, Robert, and Bardine ) had many children there, and owned businesses noted in the 1850s as being very successful, but by the 1870s no CAVENDERs appear in the Perry Co. census records. I have no idea whatsoever of where they all went !!!!!!

I sent you earlier an item about the marriage of Sebree BOLIN to Nancy (DAVIDSON) CAVENDER.

If you get a chance, you might want to join the some the genealogy chats in Family Treehouse on AOL. The surname BOLIN has been coming up frequently there.

(Editor Note: The following is an answer to some questions I asked:/jm)

WILSON published 1 book about 1910, but his major work was never published. He compiled his history from around 1900 until about 1940, and is about 23 volumes at about 500 pages per volume. The unpublished history has been copied to microfilm, is well indexed, and is available for research at the Jasper IN public library in the Indiana room. The library has microfilm print machines to copy the pages. I do not know of anyone in Jasper that will research the microfilm for you. His history is incredibly detailed and if you need family data from Dubois Co, it is worth the drive to get the copies. (editorial note: he is speaking about the historian, Wilson, who wrote Wilson's History of Dubois Co, IN, pub ca 1910, as well as these unpublished history volumes/jm)

I have been working on the research for my CAVENDER line for many years, but I gathered more data from Wilson's unpublished history in Jasper IN in 6 hours than I have in hundreds of hours of research in the library here !!! I obtained over 100 pages of detailed history, descendant, and marriage data on the 2 CAVENDER brothers (William and Anson) that moved from Perry Co. to Dubois Co about 1835. The only problem is that I only copied the indexed pages, and I now need to go back and copy another 100 pages to fill in the gaps.

The author of Wilson's History was George R. Wilson, C.E.. and the text excerpts that you forwarded to me sound exactly like the writing style he used in the unpublished history.

Mr. WILSON probably would have been born about 1865, based on some statements he made in his unpublished history about going to school with Mary Jane COX and having attended the marriage of her to my great-grandfather's older brother. I saw an article on him in a 1950s history titled (I think I am remembering correctly) Teder's History of Dubois Co. IN.. Someone at the Jasper IN Library said that Wilson spent most of his life travelling around Dubois Co. and collecting history notes from anyone that would discuss history with him. They also said that when he got too old to drive, he would get other people to take him. I was under the impression that WILSON lived in Jasper IN, and I think they told me that he had an insurance business there, but I am not positive of that. He may have lived in Indianapolis for a while. I believe they told me a niece of his has the hardcopies. I would like to see the hardcopies also, for there were some pictures of my family from the 1860s included in the microfilm that were not clear.

I found Wilson's unpublished history on my second visit to Jasper IN a couple of years ago. It is unfortunate that his history was never published so that it would be more accessable . It something that would be very beneficial to anyone doing research that relates to Dubois Co..

If you decide to go, take plenty of change for the copy machines, you'll need it !!!

Talk to ya later Jerry Cavender Memphis, Tenn

I have a grand aunt who was from Ft Branch but so far have been unable to find her family, her name was Nellie COALE or COAL. She was married to Sam's brother John TURPIN. My TURPIN side came to Turpin Hill, Warrick Co in 1833 and in 1860 Gurley was born in Gibson Co. From there to Evansville, Vanderburgh CO, where most are buried, then to Portage, Porter Co, IN where I live. Ft Branch was where Mary E WILHITE was born. Her first husband was John I.
