LANGE / MOES

I am looking for information about the descendant of an "auxiliary" lost family branch which came from Gibson Cnty., and consider that by entering the available information on the database for Indiana might provide a start in this investigation, giving others who might be interested in the names some information which may help us both.

Seeking information on these persons, and all ancestors/descendants:

MOES, Friedrich Wilhelm "William" b Aug 5, 1814 Leuscheid, Germany d Oct 7, 1875 Princeton, Gibson Co, IN USA (could also be Patoka Cnty.) marriage date and place: unknown (seeking) spouse: LANGE, Wilhelmine b Oct 18, 1826 Hannover, Germany d unknown (seeking date and place) children: Bertha MOES, b Dec 2, 1858 Patoka Cnty?,IN USA; d Mar 31, 1892 Thun, Switzerland Wilhelmine MOES, b Sep 20, 1861 Patoka Cnty?, IN USA; d unknown date & place Laura MOES, b Jan 13, 1868, Patoka Cnty, IN USA; d unknown date & place Carl Wilhelm MOES, b Jul 11, 1869 Patoka Cnty, IN USA; d unknown date & place

Above information comes from two sources: 1)Vom Berg - "Geschichte der Familie Moes" published 1911, Dusseldorf, Germany 2) Census Patoka Cnty, IND 1860 and 1870

INDIANA STATE TRAVEL BOOK (WPA)

NOTE: I wrote to Wendy because I wanted to find out more about these state travel books -- here is my original question and her reply.

judith murphy wrote:

> I am not familiar with the state travel books by the WPA Writer's Project -- > where would I find these?

> Judy M.

Hello - Many libraries have them. They are occasionally in the travel section but more often in the reference section. I use them for genealogy, too. The books often include the local names for places and I've found things like: "Smith Creek, names after a local family that farmed the land around the creek". If a family lived in area for awhile, there are often such references or a reference to old homesteads in the area. Many of the homes no longer exist due to the rapid expansion of our population since the time the book was written or they are there but the history of the place is lost from general knowledge. A brief warning, though. All the books were compiled by different authors and/or groups. Each set their own criteria. Some are gold mines of local information but a few ignore the more homey aspects. Hope you find them useful. Wendy

NAME: RALPH C. LAWRENCE

LAWRENCE

Comparing what I already had and what you sent has convinced me that RALPH LAWRENCEs appearance in your index is just a coincedence. Uncommon, I agree, but I can find no link of him to the SANDAGE clan.

First off, he had no sister name Sarah. Secondly, I went thru the entire Lawrence line and I cannot find a "Robert Ray" or a "Wilber Ray" connected to the family at all. Of course, that doesn't mean that someone couldn't have missed a link here or there.

Judith, I am as green as Hoosier spring corn when it comes to computers and genealogy. I don't have the LAWRENCE line in my computer files, and it would take me until spring planting next year to get it in an E-Mail message foremat. So, if you would like to give me a Snail Mail address, I'll burn off a copy of the entire line, back to their initial landing, and mail it to you. Are you a member of the Tri-State Genealogy Society? Are you what the computer folks refer to as a "sysop" for Gibson and Perry Cos? Does Gibson and Perry have a specific genealogical society?

I have a lot lot of research to do in Gibson on the maternal side of my family and it would be great if there was an organization that I could get into there. I am told that TSGS has a lot of reference material on Gibson. But, I have only been a member for about three months and have not had the oppurtunity to make a trip back home to take advantage of what they have. I will for sure this summer some time. Ralph at

LOCKWOOD / MAHL / MAIL / MALES / SPAIN

Looking for other researchers working on family of Isaac and Pheobe LOCKWOOD, who came to Gibson Co. about 1819. Have many things to share on this family. Looking for the father of Solomon MALES/MAIL/MAHL, who was born in Knox Co. in 1792 and married Susan SPAIN in about 1816. Their daughter Elinor MALES (1818-1851) married Edmund/Edwin Burr LOCKWOOD in Gibson Co. in 1838. Solomon MALES was in the War of 1812, and a local history says his unnamed father was one of G.R. Clarke's troops in the Revolutionary War. There were several land entries in the 1830s in Gibson Co. for Solomon, John and Isaac MAIL. Thanks for your time. NAME: MICHAEL L. LANCE

BEELER / LANCE / SANDAGE

My name is Michael L. LANCE and I am researching the LANCE family in Indiana. My 3rd great grandfather, John LANCE, settled in Gibson County ca 1816. He was born somewhere in Kentucky around 1795.

One of his sons, Simeon LANCE, married Elizabeth J. BEELER and lived in Pike County by 1849. A son, John W. LANCE, was born to Simeon and Elizabeth in 1853.

John W. LANCE married Lura HICKMAN and moved from Warrick County to Patoka Township, Pike County. Their son Jesse A. LANCE was born in 1885.

Jesse A. LANCE was married in Pike county to Flora SANDAGE in 1904, and continued to live in Patoka at least until 1920.

I am hoping that this Flora SANDAGE has ties to you and that you might provide information on her and her family. If she does, I will be happy to provide you with much more information about the LANCE Branch of the SANDAGEs if you desire.

BUMP / CANADY / CHAPPELL / CHOPPELL / HARDING / HILEY / HINTON / KELLEMS / KENNEDY / KILEY / LAWRENCE / RUSSELL / SANDAGE / SANDRIDGE / SANDWICH / SIMONSON / VanWINKLE / VAUGHN / WILKERSON

Query removed at request of Mr. Lawrence since my reply made him realize that his relative was not a Gibson Co family.

(My first reply) First, let me explain that this book was made up of the lineages for SANDAGE and when people married into the family then their children and grandchildren, if known is traced since they too had blood of SANDAGE in them. Mrs. Browning lives in Oklahoma and after about 25 years of research (writing letters to me and many others) she compiled this book. I have a copy and have been SLOWLY indexing it. I will glance and see if there is more on the LAWRENCE family on the page you mentioned.

There may be more in the book on LAWRENCEs since we find these persons seemed to intermarry over and over to other persons that lived in the same locality -- so if you only had 100 surnames in that locality, you find the same surname marrying into the SANDAGE line again and again and again. If I see anymore then I will let you know that too. But without a page to go to it is difficult (which is why I am doing the index -- then everyone can find all instances of LAWRENCE families and other surnames in the book).

(My last reply)

I haven't had a chance to check the book yet, but here is your lineage from my files: (this portion is not substantiated yet -- this info I received from Ms. Lula Terry and haven't gotten reply back from my letter as to where she found this information: (Col) James Sandwich/Sandridge/Sandidge ------------ b ca 1620 England | | | John Sandidge --------------------------------------Mary Vaughn b ca 1666 England | b ca 1670 England d 1708 New Kent, VA | d ca 1707 VA | | Thomas Sandage/Sandidge------------------------Frances Chappell/Choppell b 1691 | (they marr Feb 20, 1711/12 | Albemarle Co, VA) | (from here down verified) Nathan Sandage-------------------------------Mary Canady/Kennedy (her b ca 175_ VA | father was Joseph Canady / d bef 1812 Union Co, SC | Kennedy) | Thomas Sandage---------------------------wf#1 Nancy Ann Simonson b Feb 2/9 1776 Union Co, SC | b SC d Apr 18,1852 Perry Co, IN | | Moses Sandage----------------------------wf#1 Sarah Harding (her parents b Sep 1, 1805/6 SC/IN | parents were Samuel Harding & d 1874/5 Perry Co, IN | Margaret VanWinkle | Sarah b ca 1813 KY | (they marr Nov 6, 1828 Perry Co, IN) | Samuel Sandage---------------------------Matilda Hiley/Kiley b 1830 Perry Co, IN | b 1826 | | Edith "Eda" Sandage------------------------Robert Ray Lawrence b oct 26, 1852 | b Oct 1, 1849 d Oct 21, 1912 | d Nov 19, 1925 | Wilber Ray Lawrence---------------------------Nancy A. Hinton b Oct 2, 1892 | b 1899 d Aug 27, 1947 | d Jun 22, 1980 Keensburg,IL | Ralph Lawrence------------------------------------ (we had no name or anything further until your letter and you said this is your gr-father

(Ralph's sister was Sarah who marr Charles KELLEMS and I know that there are other Kellems researchers out there who might know more on your Lawrences.)

When Ms Browning's book was published I checked my notes against her book and updated my notes -- but I see no new updates in the notes so know that Ms. Browning's book apparently did not have anything further than I did -- and therefore we both stopped at Ralph Lawrence and didn't have anything further in his lineage or his spouse. Therefore, I would appreciate any lineage down to yourself including any dates you know, spouses, etc.

You mentioned that you are the 3rd Ralph so I gather that your father was also Ralph Lawrence too?

I do have a note that Moses Sandage's descendants are all in Chapter 2 of her book. Also, if you look in the LOOKUPS section of the Perry Co or Gibson Co, IN webpage you will see her book shown with her address should you think you would like a copy of it.

(Since letter to him I did check and saw nothing more in book about Lawrence except the mention that Robert Ray LAWRENCE was a postmaster and the different persons in the generations listed from Robert Ray LAWRENCE to Ralph LAWRENCE (the brothers and sisters I didn't put here since not direct blood line). Of course there is lots of stuff on the SANDAGE part of the family.

He also sent me information and we do not see a connection, and this Robert Ray LAWRENCE, and the Ralph LAWRENCEs mentioned in the SANDAGE line are NOT the same but are ones from the Evansville, IN area.)

SOCIETY OF INDIANA PIONEERS

[Ed. Note: I asked around to find when and how a person would get their ancestor enrolled as one of the Indiana Pioneers. This is one of the responses. I think this is something all genealogy researchers for Indiana should know. Although I am placing this in the county page I am including all the Indiana counties' dates that this wonderful person gave to me in his message. If you or anyone you know has a member listed as one of the Pioneers for this county I would appreciate knowing it -- someday I hope to have a webpage listing the county's pioneers./jm]

From P. 31, 1990 Year Book [of Society of Indiana Pioneers]:

"Dates to Determine Eligibility for Society Membership

To be eligible for membership in the Society of Indiana Pioneers an applicant must submit jproof that at least one ancester settled in Indiana abefore the close of the pioneer period of the county wherein such ancestor established residence.

Any person interested in membership can obtain information and application forms from THE SOCIETY OF INDIANA PIONEERS, 315 West Ohio St., Indianapolis, IN 46202."

After a careful study, eligibility dates were determined at an annual meeting of the members of the Society in December of 1933, and these dates can only be changed by vote of the members at the annual meeting of the Society in November.

The Counties and dates follow (read across): Adams 1840 Allen 1840 Bartholomew 1830 Benton 1840 Blackford 1840 Boone 1835 Brown 1830 Carroll 1835 Cass 1835 Clark 1825 Clay 1830 Clinton 1835 Crawford 1825 Daviess 1825 Dearborn 1825 Decatur 1830 Dekalb 1840 Delaware 1830 Dubois 1825 Elkhart 1840 Fayette 1825 Floyd 1825 Fountain 1830 Franklin 1825 Fulton 1840 ***Gibson 1825*** Grant 1840 Greene 1830 Hamilton 1830 Hancock 1830 Harrison 1825 Hendricks 1830 Henry 1830 Howard 1840 Huntington 1840 Jackson 1825 Jasper 1840 Jay 1840 Jefferson 1825 Jennings 1825 Johnson 1830 Knox 1825 Kosciusko 1840 Lagrange 1840 Lake 1840 Laporte 1840 Lawrence 1825 Madison 1830 Marion 1830 Marshall 1840 Martin 1825 Miami 1835 Monroe 1825 Montgomery 1830 Norgan 1830 Newton 1850 Noble 1840 Ohio 1825 Orange 1825 Owen 1825 Parke 1830 PERRY 1825 Pike 1825 Porter 1840 Posey 1825 Pulaski 1840 Putnam 1830 Randolph 1830 Ripley 1825 Rush 1830 Scott 1825 Shelby 1830 Spencer 1825 Steuben 1840 St. Joseph 1840 Sullivan 1825 Switzerland 1825 Tippecanoe 1830 Tipton 1840 Union 1825 Vanderburgh 1825 Vermillion 1830 Vigo 1825 Wabash 1840 Warren 1830 Warrick 1825 Washington 1825 Wayne 1825 Wells 1840 White 1840 Whitley 1840" The Society was formed in 1916; Indiana's Centennial Year. STRONG

I am looking for Samuel STRONG, John STRONG or William STRONG. They moved to Gibson Co., IN from Jackson Co (Clay Co) TN after the Civil War. They all fought with Union Kentucky Units and left after problems in TN after the war. Samuel was supposedly killed in a fight in Princeton in 1869-1870. I have not found any record of them as of yet. After Samuel STRONG's death his wife returned to TN. However a few children were supposedly adopted by a doctor in Princeton. I am trying to find if tax records or agricultural records show them.

RICH / STRONG

I am looking for some direction on location an ancestor. Are tax records available for Gibson County from 1860-1870? My family moved from Jackson Co., TN to Gibson County after the Civil War. A William, John and Samuel STRONG lived outside or near Princeton. I have not found them in any census records. I was hoping that some tax records or agricultural census might exist.

As our family story goes: brothers, William, John and Samuel STRONG moved to Indiana and settled in Gibson Co. Samuel was allegedly a blacksmith and farmer. Several of their children were born in Princeton between 1865 and 1870. In 1869-1870 Samuel was supposedly killed by a man in a fight. After his death several families attempted to take the children from his widow wife. His widow, Margaret RICH STRONG, was a few months pregnant at the time with 12 children. She left Indiana and returned to Jackson (Clay Co) TN. Supposedly one or more children were kept by a doctor in Gibson County (Princton). I have not found any proof as yet and seem to be at a dead end. Do you have any advise?

Sincerely,

Dave Strong

My name is Beverly JOHNSTON WINBOLT, and I live in Grants Pass, Or. My father and his family came from Indiana. He was Charles Isaac JOHNSTON and was born in Princeton in 1904. His father, Oscar Peter JOHNSTON, was born in Crawford, Co. in 1877, and his mother, Lydia LATHROP, was born in Gibson Co. in 1880. Lydia mother was Letitia ALLEN and that family had been in Gibson Co. for a long, long time. Looking for relatives, genealogical info, anything I can find about the family of John GRIESS and Dorothea BRETZ who lived in Vanderburgh County, IN from about the mid-1800's to the early 1900's. They immigrated from Germany and settled in the Newburgh/ Evansville area. I believe there were 5 or 6 sons and several daughters.

Also Looking for information, relatives, etc. of Anna Catherine KRIEKHAUS, from the Vanderburgh County, IN area who married Louis C. GRIESS, son of John and Dorothea GRIESS, in late 1800's to early 1900's. They later moved to the Chicago, IL area.

McFARLAND / MONTGOMERY

I am looking for any information you have on Samuel MONTGOMERY and his wife Mary "Polly" (McFARLAND). I know they moved to Gibson County about 1815 and supposedly are buried in the William Benson Cemetery. Samuel served in the Revelutionary War and is listed as a War Veteran buried in Indiana. I would like to verify that they are buried there and find out any other possible information you might have on them, especially Mary's exact place and date of birth and parents names, if available. Thanks for your help.

BENNETT / BRYANT / HICKS

Hello. My name is Thomas N. Malone Sr. from Phoenix, Arizona. I been researching my genealogy for a little while and have found that my roots go back to Indiana and Kentucky. My great-great-grandmother on my fathers' mothers' side was Altha BRYANT. Her father was William (Uncle Billy) BRYANT of Oakland City, Indiana. She married B.J. HICKS on October 25, 1858 and lived four miles north of Hartford, Kentucky. I know this because William Thomas HICKS (one of the three sons of B.J. and Altha) wrote a small ten page booklet about his life. He mentioned that his grandfather was this William BRYANT who was well-known in the area as "Uncle Billy". While B. J. HICKS was off fighting the Civil War his wife and children moved back to be closer to their family until the war was over. Uncle Billy had a brother named Rasha who was also a farmer in the area. (1860's). I have learned that William BRYANT was born in 1807 to Thomas and Lucrecia (BENNETT) BRYANT. I am now getting more info from the large LDS genealogy data-base files here in Mesa. I hope this will help. I will also send you more information as it becomes available. Thomas Malone.

ELPERS / FALS / KNAPP / SCHELHORN / SCHMITT / TENBARBE / VOEGEL / VOGEL / WEIS / WEISS / WILL , SCHMITT GIBSON CO WPA WORK/INDEX

Most Indiana counties have birth, death and marriage index prepared by WPA. They indexed everything available through 1920. The index list parents and Volume/page number. Most libraries in Indiana have the full set or a least the ones for their county. There is a set in Princeton and they will let you look at the originals birth records. They are in a old school house a few blocks south of the courthose.

(note: this next statement was in answer to a question I had written about my Justin MARTIN b Gibson Co, IN/jm)

I have MARTINs in the area going back to 1835 in Germany but don't have Justin.

Do you have names such as VOEGEL, VOGEL, WEIS, WEISS, FALS, WILL, ELPERS, SCHMITT, KNAPP, SCHELHORN, TENBARBE?

LOCKHART / WALLACE

My name is David WALLACE. My ancestors (great grandfather) settled in Dale in the 1860's, I believe, and owned a milling company. Later my grandfather (David) settled in Owensville and also was a miller. My father (Alan) was born in Owensville in 1902, graduated from Earlham College in Richmond, ultimately settled in the Chicago area. His brothers and sisters all left Owensville in the 1920's. I was last there in 1952 when my grandmother (she was a LOCKHART) was buried. My real curiosity is about the Dale, IN WALLACEs -- I want to track down the descendents of my grandfather's brothers who may have ramained in Dale for a number of years. Can we communicate? My postal address is 3018 Sedgewick Drive, Lynchburg, VA 24503. You have my e-mail address. I am rather new to the genealogy game.

BAXTER / BEARD / BOLIN / DEAN / ENGLISH / HUGHES / MALLOTT / RILEY / WALKER / WILLIAMS

My grandfather was Hiram Corinth HUGHES, born about 1865. His parents may have been Hiram and Martha ? Hughes. He had a younger sister named Mary (she married Kel RILEY). They had 13 children, among them were Brian, Lizzy, John, Lorena, Charles, Lyde, Helen and Ellen, who were twins. Another child, whose name can not be recalled, had a baby girl named Golden BOLIN. The daughter died in childbirth and this Child, Golden, was left to Kel and Mary, her maternal grandparents.

This information has been given to me by my mother. Her father was a coal miner in and around Pike County where she and her 4 siblings were raised. Her mother was Martha A. BEARD HUGHES, born 1879, whose parents were Hugh and Elzina WALKER BEARD. It is thought that Hiram's father may have also been named Hiram as there is a tombstone in Wiiliams Cemetary that says "Martha Wife of Hiram", but the dates are not appropriate to be my grandparents, even though my grandfather is also buried there. (I knew my grandmother Martha and she is buried in Indianapolis, IN). So grandfathers' mothers name may have also been Martha.

There were also supposed to be an ancestor on her side who was either named Beady WALKER or Beady BEARD, a Cherokee Indian. There are many of the RILEY and BOLIN families still in the area. One of Kel and Mary's children I spoke to last year.

Hiram C. HUGHES was a coal miner in and around Pike County. He was supposed to have been orphaned at a young age and raised his younger sibling, Mary. He was buried in Williams Cemetery near Aryshyre, IN as was most of the family. The cemetery land was donated by his niece, Lyde RILEY WILLIAMS, one of his sister's children. Little is known of his family except there was a Bob ENGLISH who may have been an uncle or his 1/2 brother. He also had a relative named John DEAN, perhaps an uncle or brother, Dean was a surname. Hiram HUGHES was a divorced man with a daughter by that marriage. The first wife's last name was perhaps BAXTER and the daughter's name was Laura.

No one can find much on the HUGHES, ENGLISH or BEARD lineage, also MALLOTT My grandmother told me that was her great grandmother's name.

Hope this may tie in some how with your BOLIN search and would appreciate any information that you can give about my grandparents roots. It may also help you to contact Helen, as she is still in very sound mind. There are still some of these people and ancestors alive and mentally alert in and around Petersburg, IN. I can help you get in touch with them, if it would help.

Hope this helps you and I would appreciate any help that you might help me in my quest for my family history. Please email me at: marmsie929@aol.com
