BAILEY / BLUE / FRENCH

I am looking for any and all information on James W. FRENCH and his wife/descendants. James moved to the vicinity of Princeton, IN in the late 1830s to the late 1840s and disappeared from the family history. He was born in Jefferson Co. Virginia (now W. Va.) about 1820 to Walter W. FRENCH and Rachael P. BLUE. There were two other children of this marriage, Samuel Jackson FRENCH and Mary Jane FRENCH. Rachael died in 1824, Walter then married Lavinia BAILEY and they had several children. James W. FRENCH would have spent much of his life, before moving to Gibson County, in Randolph Co. IN and Darke Co. OH. Willard J. French WJF0511@AOL.COM

HANKINS / HANNAH / WOODS

WOODS, Eliza, born 1839 probably Gibson County, Indiana. Moved to Jasper County, Illinois by September 1853 where she married William HANKINS and remained the rest of her life. She was living with Patrick WOODS, b 1775 in Virginia and Mary, b 1802 in Kentucky as well as a younger Patrick WOODS and his family. Were these people her parents, grandparents? The younger Patrick also moved to Jasper County, Il before 1860. The older Patrick WOODS was the son of Joseph WOODS who was one of the original settlers of Gibson Co. Patrick's first wife was Jane HANNAH so if Mary is a wife to him she is a second (or later) wife. I went to the Gibson County Public Library and found very little information about Patrick WOODS, Sr. There was a great deal of information on most of the other children (and descendants) of Joseph WOODS and the information provided was not consistent with early (1830 and 1840) census data. I know that Eliza WOODS was my wife's gg grandmother. I don't know anything about her ancestory or family history. Any information would be appreciated.

BENNETT / CRABTREE / GOODWIN

CRABTREE, William. Born in 1792? in NC (VA?). William and his brother, John, (and possibly other siblings) came to Christian Co., KY, in the very early 1800's. William married Sarah (Sallie) BENNETT--possibly in KY--and they and John and his family migrated to Posey Co., IN, about 1814 or so. William and John are listed as land owners in the 1820 Posey Co. census.

William and Sallie had about 6 children--one of those children being George Washington CRABTREE who married Achsah (Axie) GOODWIN, daughter of Elijah GOODWIN. Until now I had not known who did this type of work. I referred several to the Nolcox Nieghborhood since I knew Ms. Nolcox lived in the area and might know of a researcher or at least know of genealogical societies where these notices could be posted. She also has a WONDERFUL webpage for African-American Research and links to some other research pages dealing with this same subject.

Ms. Nolcox wrote back to one of the persons to whom I had referred to her. I am putting here some of what she wrote and which shows her email address (as well as putting it in the FROM link above). Write to her for her fees/Judith Murphy]:

BYERS / SKELTON

This past week Red SKELTON died in Rancho Mirage, CA. He was born in Knox County, but his roots were Gibson Co.,IN. George BYERS the chronicler of the SKELTON family of Gibson and Warrick counties told me years ago that Red Skelton was a descendant of John SKELTON, brother to Jacob SKELTON of Gibson Co., and Zachariah SKELTON of Warrick Co. IN. These three brothers were sons of William SKELTON of Virginia. Red Skeltons name was Richard Bernard SKELTON.

Here is the diagram that Col.Byers sent to me in 1973.

William Skelton b. abt 1745,Mechlenburg Co.?.VA d. 1825 Warrick Co.,IN

John Skelton b. abt 1774 Union Co.,S.C. d. 15 Dec 1827 Gibson Co.,IN

Maj. James Skelton

Newton O. Skelton

Joseph Elmer Skelton

Richard Bernard Skelton 'Red Skelton' (comedian/actor)

Should anyone ask, this is the lineage given to me by Co.Byers.

Red Skelton is related to probably thousands of individuals whose ancestory is from Gibson Co. Many of them may be interested in this lineage.

1 YR HELLO/EDITORIAL

This month will make 1 year since I first put this webpage online. I have tried to add some data for everyone to find on a regular basis.

I am currently trying to type as fast as I can since I have much data I think you all can use; but, a person can only do so much in a day (and try to work full-time, take care of house, family, health issues, and do research in the libraries and via microfilm too). I apologize when queries sent to me directly get buried in my mail and not found immediately -- and would like to remind everyone to please PUT THE COUNTY NAME IN SUBJECT LINE of emails.

It is terrible to be in a "catch-22" situation -- either I fix up the queries IMMEDIATELY each day from the autobot and my email, or I do research at the library and courthouses to gather more info for these webpages and type this up. I do hope you all now can understand (from this previous statement) as to why a query may not make it to the page for several days to a couple weeks after you have sent it. When the autobot is working I suggest you use this for your queries -- then everyone can view your query within 24 hours of you putting it there (via the Queries Not Yet On This Page link). This way your query is able to be viewed by others immediately, and not have to wait on me to put it on the page.

Same with the index -- I have to manually do these and some things which are already in alphabetic order may not be in this index. It is a "starting point" only, and a link to ALL QUERIES (old and new). Please learn to use your computer's FIND and SEARCH features so you can check EACH webpage you go to -- remember to check for variations of the names too. Even use this on the index after you have browsed the name you are seeking -- when I put up queries and other things (like military, miscellaneous, etc.) I copy the names and put them at the bottom of the page and then put them at the bottom of the index page so I can alphabetize them into this index at a later time. So you might miss something I just added if you only go to those items in the index.

I thank you all for ignoring my bad grammar and spelling and sometimes skewed-up webpages (especially index when I forget to put in a simple or
). I try to be accurate when typing and transcribing items (from microfilms, etc). But I do make errors I am definitely NOT a professional but hope to improve with time and experience. I thank you all for your patience with me as I gather information for these pages.

I also would like to apologize as to some of the methods I am using. Being into genealogy for over 35 years I ALWAYS like to verify EVERYTHING with official data. But, you will see here on these webpages data that is NOT official along with the data that IS official.

There are several reasons for this giving to you of unofficial data -- 1) I feel that even if it is not official, a date and place can oftentimes aid a person in obtaining the official data from the proper books and records, possibly even saving them time and money; 2) My own records were destroyed first by my x-husband (who threw away my stuff in anger while I was at work) and then later what wasn't destroyed was then destroyed by fire when my house burned. I have been able to obtain thousands of bits of info (dates and places and names) from things I had sent to family and friends, but unfortunately I did not show WHERE I had gotten the data (offical books or word-of-mouth) from originally in these papers and notes I had sent to them. Instead of not allowing others to use this data I decided to put it there and maybe help even ONE other person find something more easily than if they didn't have that date or name; 3) Having been raised in San Antonio, Texas, having family in Indiana and New York and currently living in Ohio, I have always had to do research "long-distance" and know the importance of finding data of any kind in the state you are living; so, I make these items available via the wonderful world of computers and the internet as soon as I can in the hope that some other long-distance researcher can benefit from it and help them get their official documentation; and 4) I am a very VERY impatient person and think that this is how the whole world is too. I feel that even if the item isn't complete that maybe what IS available (through these webpages I am creating) can benefit somebody TODAY and avoid having them wait until 6 months or a year when everything has been 100% completed before putting online -- so as soon as I get even a little bit typed up I try to put it online. A good example of this is the census' you will be seeing added to as I get them transcribed and typed up off of the microfilms. But someday they will be completed and everyone will be able to see all the names of family members, ages, places of birth, etc. To give you an idea I will explain here how I plan on doing these census' -- first I am getting the name and surname of each DIFFERENT surname along with the microfilm page, house number, age, place born, etc. I am also working on things that are IMPORTANT -- for instance if they were married within the year I am getting those persons names (1850) as I feel this is a "clue" to finding their marriage and a woman's surname if it is currently not known. I have many of these families already copied or some of the family members copied in my notes (due to my own family research and helping others who were looking for someone). These notes I will be adding along with the different surnames. After I complete this for each census (1850 and 1860) I plan on going through and putting in ALL NAMES and information about these individuals who were in the census lists. It will take me awhile and surely you may find some names mispelled, etc. but I figured I would give it my BEST SHOT anyway (what with the illegibility of some pages and the terrible or old-fashioned handwriting with the loops and curls).

I hope that your visit to the webpages I support has been truly enlightening and you were able to find some things while browsing. I believe that we are only in our infancy when it comes to online genealogy research -- great days are ahead of us!!!

I would not have as much here as I do if it were not for the support of all of you "web browsers". Because of the many contributions, I have been able to add data of various kinds as well as the names of many researchers, ancestors, descendants, etc. to the many different web pages. I would like to take this time to say a BIG THANK YOU to all who have sent in information and queries. Also a big THANK YOU to the persons who sent me cookies and candies -- they were scrumptious and really welcomed (I don't have much time for baking and candy making anymore -- I wonder why !!!) I hope that I can keep adding to the webpages the items you are looking for in your endeavors to untangle that massive web of ancestors' life stories and their history.

May you all have a successful and enjoyable hunt,

NEELY / PHILLIPS

My research on a PHILLIPS family who was in Fairfield Co., SC shows that Nancy NEELY married a PHILLIPS (first name may have been Robert). They had children named John, James Neely, Elizabeth, William, Jane & Thomas who were born before 1788. By the early 1800's they left SC for TN and KY.

John and William went to Gibson Co., IN while the rest of the family went to TN and then to Lauderdale co., AL.

History of Gibson Co., IN & on page 239 stated that Sarah PHILLIPS lived in Township 1 North, Range 10, P. O. Hazelton, M. D. No. 114, and was the wife of William G. PHILLIPS who was formerly a native Fairfield Co., SC and came to Gibson Co., IN in 1813.

Wm PHILLIPS was that he was the first Justice (of peace?).

Wm and Rhoda were responsible for road in 1815.

Wm PHILLIPS appointed tax asesor in 1821 in White River and lister in 1835.

The Probate Court of Gibson Co. appointed William PHILLIPS guardian of his brother's (John) children by 1819: Robt, Sarah, Alexander, Nancy, Polly, Jane.

I would like to find the descendants if they are still in Gibson Co. or find records of this family.

If you know nothing of this do you know anyone who might or the Historical Society of Gibson Co.?

Sincerely,

I just recently started looking into my background and recently acquired Family Tree Maker. In looking through the archive volumes I have found several Andrew Jackson ANDERSONs but I cannot determine where to go from there. Can anyone tell me what the family tree # means? Two possibilities (by birth dates) are #s 5059 and 3451.

My grandmother, Lucinda ANDERSON, stats are: b. 18 Feb 1862 p.b. Princeton, Gibson Co. IN m. Joseph Landon TOOLEY d. 26 May 1942 dau of Andrew Jackson ANDERSON and Emily HALE

Rumored to be full blooded Osage. In searching the net, I found in the Osage home page alotment card collection an ANDERSON family #0891-0897. No. 0896 is Ora which is the name of one of my deceased uncles. Coincidence?

I wrote to the Osage Council about a month ago but have had no response. Can anyone help?

DAVIS / MOUNTS / NEWSOM / NEWSUM

Hi Everyone!

I am once again searching for anyone who is a NEWSUM descendant with ancestors in IN! I have a Harrison NEWSUM b. in Hopkins Co., KY in 1811 whose parents were probably Pearson NEWSOM and Mary DAVIS who were married there in 1809. They moved to Gibson Co., IN and settled near Owensville around 1816. Harrison raised his family there with his first wife, Dorcas MOUNTS. There are other NEWSUMS in the Gibson Co. and Posey Co. area who are related somehow, but I haven't made that connection yet. Harrison moved across the Wabash River later into Wabash Co., IL with some of his children, and died there. My beloved grandfather was born there also.

Please contact me if you are a NEWSUM descendant! I would love to share what I have!

Kyra Jo Hatke in IN :-)

ALMON / EMERINE / HARMON / JOHNSON / MURPHY / PACE / TURNER

I have a question. Are you related to Jeff MURPHY, KY genealogist? I found his web site while checking out the PACE name in KY.

I said I would send what I have on the JOHNSONs:

Benjamin Coil JOHNSON was born in Virginia. His father was Arthur JOHNSON also from Virginia who served through the Revolutionary War.

Benjamin's wife was Polly EMERINE (ALMON) JOHNSON.

Ben and Polly's children were: 1) William Riley b 2 Sept 1846 2)Thomas Almon b. 3) Benjamin Franklin 4)Marian (Malinda) b.2 Feb 1844

The Bible notation indicates that all the children of Ben and Polly were born at "farm home near Owensville, Poseyville, Indiana Gibson" ( I'm not sure how to interpret that notation).

1) William Riley JOHNSON married Zelpha HARMON in 1867. He died 2 Sept 1928 and she died March 1905. 4) Marian (Malinda) JOHNSON married "Elder" Ira TURNER b. 3 Nov.1843, d.22 Feb 1932. They were married 15 Oct. 1861. Marian JOHNSON TURNER died Oct. 1925 in Boone Co. MO.

William Riley (1), Thomas Almon (2), and Benjamin Franklin (3) were all Civil War Veterans.

I can follow Ira and Malinda's family in Missouri but have nothing more on the family in Indiana.

GILLILAND / TURNER

I read in the Gilliland newsletter that you are interested in southern Indiana families. I wasn't connected to the GILLILANDs during early southen IN. history but my great- great grandfather Elijah Turner and his family lived there. I have given most of my information to someone who has already done quite a bit of research on the TURNER family and has a web site. Her web site address is

http://www.geocites.com/~drsgen

If you scroll down and key in on Turner, it will give you the info. If there are any questions, I would be delighted for you to write me. Since I was only interested in the Turner line, I am unable to tell you what information you might find on the other lines on her web page but there should be other lines there from southern Indiana.

[Ed note -- we are writing to see if she will allow us to link to her site].
