TAYLOR / WELCH / WHEELER

A possible 2nd great grandfather, Clayton or Claten WHEELER lived in Patoka, Gibson County. He married Patsy TAYLOR in 1818 and was recorded on the 1820 and 1840 Census Indexes. He may have been a son of James WHEELER and Elizabeth WELCH, was born in 1792 and moved there from Virginia in 1805. I have not been able to find him after 1840. Any info out there about this family?

Thank you,

PHILLIPS

I received your information about the subject World Phillips Families. I have often thought that it would take this kind of effort to solve the difficult riddle to link the Phillips Families of the USA and Europe together. I laud your noble effort to do so.

However, I would like to know more about the organization before I become a member or lend support. Perhaps this can be done by Emails between us.

Allow me to introduce myself. I am Harry Shannon Phillips from Florence, Lauderdale County, AL. I have written two books on the PHILLIPS Families. the book contains a large number of pictures and list of descendants. The book is $40 (includes $4 for first class postage). All of the proceeds are donated to the upkeep of the Phillips Cemetery at Center Star, AL.

For many years, I have been working on the Phillips families who migrated from NC, & SC into Tennessee. I done some work in middle TN in an effort to retrace the footsteps of three Phillips Families into Giles and Lawrence Counties, TN. In the process I have found many Phillips Family Histories besides my Phillips Lines (I have two - one on mother's and one on father's side).

Mother's Line (Unproven) On 7 Oct. 1822 in Lawrence Co., TN John PHILLIPS, about age 70, applied for a Rev. War. Pension and drew it until he died in the same county ca 7 September 1827.

John stated that he served in 10th Regiment of NC Line in October 1776. commanded by Col. Abraham SHEPPARD. and later in 2nd Regiment commanded by Col. John Patterson. NOTE Reference Rev. Pension File No. S39010 & "2400 Pensioners of TN Rev. & 1812 War by Zella ARMSTRONG.

Mother's Line (Proven) John PHILLIPS, later known as Jack Phillips, was born ca NC or SC ca 1784, was living in Lawrence Co., TN in 1816 (listed as John Jr. in 1820 census), and died in Lauderdale Co, AL 6 Oct. 1868 had 12 children and duaghters married into RICHARDSON, BUTLER, TAYS, BAILEY, ALEXANDER, McPETERS, and MITCHELL families Lauderdale Co. Descendants of sons Milton and Wilson are found throughout AR, OK, and TX.

Father's Line( Proven) William C. PHILLIPS b. Dec. 1818 in TN and died in Laud Co., 18 may 1901. he married Louisa ALLEN, daughter of Willam C. ALLEN born in SC and Laud. Co, AL ca 1829. Louisa had brothers Benjamin and Wm C. Allen, Jr. Have been unable to find their descendants (Benjamin's went to Florida in 1880's).

Current work is concentrated on James Neely PHILLIPS of Fairfield Co., SC and his mother, Nancy NEELY of Ireland. The only tie between William and James is that William was administrator of estate, along with James' brother-in-law, Alexander HARVEY (and Robert brother to Alexander).

Giles and Lawrence Counties, TN Many of the Phillips Families who left NC and SC went to east TN or middle TN. Before 1805 they were in Giles and Lawrence Counties where they waited and pressured for the Indians' lands to the south. Lawrence was first a part of Giles, Giles a part of Maury and maury a part of Williamson and Williamson a part of Davidson which makes research diffucult. Many of these Phillips came to Lauderdale and settled near each other in Center Star, AL. That is, Jack, James, Thomas, William B., William C, and Robert Phillips of Center Star, AL. The connections are yet to be made - may be in some bible somewhere.

Email to genephillips@juno.com

I have gotten several things from the folks above in OK.

Have you ever heard anything about them??

I am attaching picture of myself so you can see who you are talking with all these weeks. Attachment SUM.JPG Send Pic if you have one.

I understand that you maintain the web pages for Gibson County, and Perry County. I have created some web pages for my ancestors that I would like to have linked to the County ones.

For Gibson County I would like links to,

http://w3.one.net/~evaughan/blockThe Family of August Karl BLOCK and Maria Louise KARHE

The Family of John WHITE and Sarah Jane SCOTT

The Family of James Louis VAUGHAN

All three of these families lived in Gibson County in the latter 1800’s and early 1900’s.

I would also like to have a link from Perry County to the one for James Louis VAUGHAN.

Thanks, Emmett Vaughan

MYSTERIOUS DEATH Perhaps someone out there can help me? Alonzo DEWEESE m. Mary E. WHITE b. Pike Co. IN Children: Ethel b. Pike Co 1905 m. Princeton IN Arvin Scott TAYLOR (my grandparents), Alonzo, Elwood, Nora, Bessie, Blanche, Beatrice (died as teen), Helen (died as teen) Violet (Mary remarried to Claris BRYD when Alonzo died)

I've researched and found in both Princeton newspapers that this family lived in Princeton. I even have a picture of Claris BRYD with my great grandmother Mary, but I was not able to find any records on their marriage or the birth of Violet.

Further, Violet is a mystery to our family. Several stories link her to death of Poison. Some say she was pregnant and not married or pregnant by a married man, some say she was married and just unhappy, and even some stories say that she was murdered. Alonzo, her half brother is still living in Michigan and although he gave me a great deal of information he would not talk about Violet because it was too tragic. I had spent hours upon hours in the Princeton Library trying to find something in the newspapers but had no luck. I do not know when she was born but they all say she was a beautiful lovely young women of approximately 18 when she died. If any one can help me, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you very much in advance. Donna Taylor email: Dtaylor7@aol.com

[Ed note: I mentioned photos I hope (someday) to digitize about one of the mine accidents in Francisco and Nan sent me this info that I think can help others too if they had family there/jm]

I read in the Princeton paper about a book signing by Marcia McCONN OGLE. Her booklet is "A Nurse Recalls" and is her mother's account of her role in the 1926 explosion [Francisco, IN] (her mother, Lucia ANDREWS McCONN, was a nurse at that time and went down in the mine several times to help the injured).

You may already know about this, but thought I'd pass it along just in case you didn't.

NUCHELS / NUCKOLLS / McCLUDE / WEBB

I'm trying to find some information on my gr-gr-gr grandfather William Martin WEBB. He was born somewhere in Indiana on Nov 10, 1822 and married Drucilli NUCHELS or NUCKOLLS on Mar 14, 1844 in Martin County. My problem is that I can't seem to locate his parents. I've been told that his father's name was also William. The only William I've found so far that could remotely be his father was from Gibson county. This William married Peggy McCLUDE on Oct 13, 1819 or at least a license was issued on that date. So I'm trying to make a connection between the two Williams to determine if in fact they are the family that I've been desperatel looking for. Can you help me with this one?

I would appreciate any help you could give me.

Thanks,

Steve Aronson

[Ed note: The following was sent with Query #207 (in old queries #4) and I did not find it until later -- putting here as another query until I can get it put into html for a separate link page. Gibson Co, IN persons are mentioned in Chap 7; Chap 9 /jm] SOME EARLY PHILLIPS FAMILES IN SC AND FAIRFIELD CO., SC THEIR MIGRATION WEST TO AL, GA, KY, TN IN (ROUGH DRAFT FOR COMMENTS) BY H. SHANNON PHILLIPS, SR. (c)27 OCTOBER 1997 Email Address: Sphill9678@aol.com ABSTRACT: My search for my PHILLIPS Roots in SC has led me to collect information on several Phillips families. My Phillips lines start in Lauderdale Co., AL in the mid 1820's. Prior to this they were in TN and prior to that in the Carolinas, especially SC. The connection between William C. Phillips of Lauderdale Co., AL and James Neely Phillips of Fairfield, Co., is based on circumstantial evidence. Regardless I have pursued this line for years and hope to solve the problem even if it just helps someone else. The ARNETT, CAMPBELL, and HARVEY families of Fairfield Co., SC (and perhaps the Sloan family) are connected to the Phillips family through marriage. Others are yet to be identified. The PHILLIPS of Gibson Co., IN also tie back to Fairfield Co., SC. The purpose of this working paper is to get the problem out in front of as many people as possible. The Internet seems a good way to make contact with relatives who may help answer certain questions. Therefore I ask each recipient to send this document to at least three other people. I look forward to your input and help to solve the PHILLIPS Riddle. Please send me corrections and comments to my Email address. The following Chapters are in this document: CHAPTER 1 - EARLY SOUTH CAROLINA TO 1800 CHAPTER 2 - SOME EARLY PHILLIPS RECORDS IN SC CHAPTER 3 - PHILLIPS OF ANTRIM CO., IRELAND CHAPTER 4 - JOHN AND JANE PHILLIPS OF CAMDEN AND FAIRFIELD COUNTY, SC CHAPTER 5 - ROBERT PHILLIPS OF FAIRFIELD COUNTY CHAPTER 6 - WILLIAM AND THOMAS PHILLIPS OF FAIRFIELD CO. CHAPTER 7 - THE PHILLIPS - NEELY CONNECTION CHAPTER 8 - PHILLIPS MIGRATE TO TENNESSEE WITH CAMPBELLS AND HARVEYS CHAPTER 9 - PHILLIPS MIGRATE TO INDIANA CHAPTER 10 - PHILLIPS MIGRATE TO ALABAMA CHAPTER 11 - PHILLIPS MIGRATE TO ARKANSAS REFERENCES CHAPTER 1 - EARLY SOUTH CAROLINA TO 1800 The first Europeans to see the what is now the Carolinas were the Spanish and French. When they came in the 16th century, the land was inhabited by many tribes of native Americans. The largest tribes were the Cherokees and Catawbas. The first European settlements failed. In 1670 a permanent English settlement near what is now Charleston was successful. In 1669 the Lords Proprietors drew up the Fundamental Constitution of Carolina. Even before settlement began they planned to divide the whole province into counties to facilitate establishing government control. In 1682 three counties (Craven, Berkley, Colleton) were laid out and later Granville. In 1710 Carolina was divided into North and South Carolina. European settlers established large plantations along the coast and they low country. They raised rice and indigo. The plantations became prosperous. African slaves were brought in to labor on these plantations and were a large part of the population by 1720. Charleston, a major port, became a city of culture and commerce. The upcountry was settled by small farmers and traders. The white settlers literally pushed the native Americans out of what is now South Carolina. In 1769 an act of the General Assembly divided the four counties into seven judicial districts.. Along the coast from north to south were the Georgetown, Charleston, and Beaufort Districts. Central to the present State were Cheraws, Camden, and Orangeburg Districts. The north district was the Ninety Six District. To the north of the 96th was Cherokee Indian’s land. In the Act of 1785 the districts included counties as described below: Cheraws: Chesterfield, Marlboro, and Darlington Camden: York, Chester, Fairfield, Lancaster, Richland, Claremont, and Claredon Ninety Six: Spartanburg, Union, Laurens, Newberry, Abbeville, and Edgefield, Lewisburg, Lexington, and Winton In 1786 part of the Indian land became Greenville and the other part became Pendleton in 1789. In 1791 two new districts were formed Washington which included Greenville and Pendleton counties. The Pickney District took York and Chester counties from the Camden District and Spartanburg and Union Counties from the Ninety Sixth District. Salem County was formed from portions of Claremont and Claredon Counties. Kershaw was formed from portions of Claremont, Lancaster, Fairfield, and Richland counties. South Carolina was a rich colony before the Revolutionary War. It had a strong merchant and planter class. More Revolutionary War battles were fought in South Carolina than any other state. The major battles were Camden, Cowpens, King's Mountain, and Sullivan's Island. On May 23, 1788 South Carolina ratified the U. S. Constitution and became the eighth state to enter the union. Following the American Revolution South Carolina grew and prospered. Cotton became a major part of the economy after the invention of the cotton gin, especially in the up country. A new capital, Columbia, was established in the middle of the state. By the early 1800's tensions were rising between the southern and northern state s because high tariffs favorable to the north and unfavorable to the south were enacted. ( These tensions later climaxed on December 20, 1860 South Carolina seceded and on April 12, 1861 fired on Fort Sumter at Charleston.) This differs from the entry which says that John had seven children. One reference said that John’s two nephews John and Robert Buchanan) came with him and this would total seven. Sometime between 1770-1780 the Church of Lebanon on Jackson's Creek was formed. David McCreight, James Gray, William Hamilton, John Phillips, and John and Alexander Robertson, elders from Ireland, gathered the people to form a congregation. [8] James, John, and Robert became British Officers. John and Robert Buchanan, John ’s nephews, became Rebel Officers in the American Army. John and Robert had been in the province about four years when the troublesome times began prior to the American Revolution. John was offered Lt. Col. Commission in the American Army and he refused. In May he refused the Oath of Allegiance and Abjuration. In July 1775 John in a meeting in Winnsboro stated his loyalty to the King and refused to sign a resolution against the British Government and this influenced others not to sign. This infuriated the Rebels against John. He was fined in November for refusing to do duty for the Rebel cause and his two sons also refused. In 1777 when he swore allegiance to the King and influenced others to do likewise. He was arrested and tried on 3 December and was condemned to be hanged. He was held for 15 days and could see the gallows.. He was released because of the threat of retaliation. He returned to his home a nd lived quietly until Charleston was captured by the British. John had great influence with Lord Cornwallis, the British General. He joined the British army at Camden in June 1780. Fifty Loyalist joined him and the number grew to about 600 men. Cornwallis appointed him a colonel. He was in several engagements and was taken prisoner 21 January 1781 and was taken to North Carolina where he was inhumanely treated. Col. Phillips' son was taken prisoner August 1781 and was inhumanely murdered. Then John’s wife and family were driven off their plantation and were forced to go to Charleston in great distress. Documented evidence supports that the property was confiscated. At the close of the war John Phillips took his family and returned to Ahoghill Parish, in Antrim County, Ireland where he died in 1809. According to the Will Robert remained in America but was willed his watch should he come home. [9] MARY PHILLIPS MARY MARRIED James Dunsketh in Ireland. They came to America ca 1768 and received a land grant on Crocky Creek on the Cawtabaw River. All three had died by 1777 leaving the property to John Phillips. [9] RACHEL PHILLIPS Rachel was born in Ireland probably before 1740 (based on the statement that her sons 16 & 18 came to America with John Phillips, their uncle, about 1770). She was married about 1750 based on these dates. In 1788 she followed her sons and came to America. John and Robert Buchanan, her sons were captured. A Mrs. Milling, of Fairfield, happened to be in town when Charleston fell petitioned for their release and it was granted. Robert refused any favor and died a prisoner of the British. Capt. John accepted, lived, and later married the widow Milling (they had no children). [9] ROBERT PHILLIPS Robert Phillips, Junior, was born bef 1755 and bought land on Jackson Creek. He was killed while a prisoner of the Americans. There is no mention of a wife or family. JAMES PHILLIPS James was born in Ireland before 1754 based on the fact he was married with three children in 1773 (assuming he married at age 16 and had three children each year until 1773). Accordingly he was married before 1770. The Council Journal of SC stated that he arrived on 6 January 1773 from Ireland on the “Pennsylvania Farmer”. He petitioned for 250 acres of land which shows that his family consisted of himself, his wife, and three children (based on the fact that each family member was entitled to 50 acres. James was on the list of those able to pay for their land warrants. Volume 19 of the plat book stated: Pursuant to a warrant directed by John Bremen, D. S. dated 6 January 1773, I have administered and laid out to James Phillips a tract of 250 acres lying on the North side of the Pacolet River on a branch of Thickety Creek bounding on two sides on land of Ann Chesney & on other sides vacant.” However James never lived there as he lived in Charleston prior to the Revolutionary War and in Fairfield after the war. James was a Captain in the British Army during the American Revolutionary War and was assigned to St. Augustine during the entire war. His family lived in Charleston but after 1776 his wife with her sons Smith, Robert, and James moved to Jackson’s Creek among her kin. Capt. Phillips returned home after seven years but his wife rejected him. James was a schoolmaster and county surveyor. Eventually his wife accepted him and David and Creighton were born after the war. James Creighton Phillips lived in Winnsboro, SC and married (wife not named) and had a daughter Margaret who married Joseph F. Wallace. Margaret's daughters were Annie C. and Edith W. Wallace and they married W. F. Marshall and a Mr. Dixon, respectively. David, John, Samuel, Mary, Elizabeth, and Rachel all moved to Winston County, MS. A letter dated 23 December 1846 from Samuel Phillips to Hugh McMaster described the trip and the wildness of the country. In March 1847 Samuel wrote a second letter which described the country side and the lack of culture. In a letter written in 1863 Mary, married Mr. Johnston, gave the details of how they lived and news of the family. CHAPTER 4 JOHN AND JANE PHILLIPS OF CAMDEN AND FAIRFIELD COUNTY, SC The geography of the area changed from early times until 1785. The area that is now Fairfield County was first a part of know as Berkley and Craven Counties according to 1710 map. In 1769 the Camden District was formed from Berkley and Craven Counties. Fairfield County was formed out of the Camden District in 1785. Winnsboro became the county seat, however, Winnsboro was settled about 1755. In a brief History of Fairfield County there was a story of how Fairfield got its name. Folklore attributes the name to a remark made by Lord Cornwallis said something about the “fair fields” of the area. From October 1789 until January 1781, Cornwallis made his headquarters in Winnsboro during the Revolutionary War. The county was settled by Scotch - Irish from colonies to the north and English and French Hugenot planters from the low country. [7] It is clear that other Phillips families were in the Camden District before the “Tory” Phillips family (James, John, Robert, arrived from Antrim County Ireland and settled in Camden in 1770. The reference which discussed the Tory family stated “ there were already in Fairfield County a William and Thomas Phillips and in 1768 a family of Phillips consisting of parents, John and Jane, with five children settled on and between reedy and Broad Rivers.” JOHN PHILLIPS The source or reference for the statement that in 1768 John and Jane Phillips, with five children lived the Reedy and Broad Rivers was not apparent.. Based on this information, one child was at least 4 or 5 years old or older. This means that John and Jane were married before 1763. Assuming that John married at the early age of 16 in 1763, means he was born by 1747. If he was 26 in 1763, means he was born 1737 or earlier if older children had already left home. Note : This early source of information is the only known source of information Twelve years from 1768 when living on the Broad River, John Phillips’ will was dated 16 October 1778. His will stated that Jane was Executrix and Robert Ellison and John Ellis were executors. John Harvey and Robert Reed were witnesses. The will named the children as follows: Robert, a son, was give 100 pounds and cattle Mary, a daughter, was given the tract next to John Rogers Jane, a daughter, was given the other tract next to John Rogers Elizabeth, a daughter was given 50 acres next to John Harvey Thomas, a son 50 acres and 40 acres next to John Rogers John, a son, of 300 acres plus a colt William, a son, of 300 acres when he becomes 21 Thomas and William was given the mare. Fairfield Co., SC Estates, 6-178, Stack FA 11, stated that Jane Phillips, widow; Robert Phillips; and James McCreighton objected to paying 200 pounds in connection with the Estate of John Phillips, dated 13 August 1789. Note: Ten years later this appears to be the same John Phillips Estate which earlier involved Jane and Robert Phillips. If so, there is no mention of Robert Ellison and John Ellis and James McCreighton is a new player. CHAPTER 5 ROBERT PHILLIPS OF FAIRFIELD COUNTY Robert Phillips died in Fairfield county, SC between 24 September 1791 and 14 January 1992. In the Census of 1790 of Fairfield Co., Robert Phillips, his wife, three male (over 16) and three female children were listed. This was the only Robert Phillips listed in the Census of 1790. The number of children in the census and a will written by Robert Phillips in 1791 does not perfectly match but is close. The differences in the census could be that one son had left home and one of the females was a granddaughter. On 24 September 1791 Robert Phillips wrote his will. It was witnessed by Daniel Miller, James Neely, and Henry McNeil. The will stated that Robert was weak in body and asked that his executors (Agnes, Robert Reed and David Hamiliton, his friends) provide a Christian burial. The will further states that: 1 Agnes, my wife, have a living on the plantation. 2 John, a son, to receive that parcel of land I reserved off of the parcel that I sold John Sloan, 60 acres 3. James, a son, that parcel of land, 40 acres, I received from my brother Thomas (title not received yet) William, my son, and Thomas to receive my plantation (80 acres) where I now live Thomas, my son, and William to receive my plantation when Thomas becomes of age. Betsey, my daughter, equal amount of property if wife or children marry Jane, a daughter, equal amount of property if my wife or children marry On 14 January 1792 the will was proven. On 17 January 1792, Robert and Edward Martin, and Robert Phillips were certified as appraisers of the Estate of Robert Phillips, deceased. On 30 January 1792 Robert’s will was recorded in Fairfield Co. Will Book 1, 134-35. On 4 November 1795 James Nelly appeared before James Craig swore that he was present when Robert Phillips signed, sealed, and delivered the will before the witnesses signed the will. Note : Two things about the will are of interest 1) the relationship of the Robert Phillips who was an appraiser of Robert Phillips, deceased, Estate, and 2) why James Nelly had to appear and swear that the will was valid in 1795, almost three years later. Obviously, there were at least two men named Robert Phillips at the time of Robert Phillips death. In the 1790 Census of Fairfield Co. the Phillips who were head of household were John, James and Jean Phillips. John, William, and Thomas were not in the census and the question is where were they? The James Phillips that was in the census had a wife, two sons over 16, and four sons under 16. Was this James Phillips, the Tory? Or was it James the son of Robert Phillips? CHAPTER 6 WILLIAM AND THOMAS PHILLIPS OF FAIRFIELD CO. The account of the “Tory” Phillips family mentioned that William and Thomas Phillips were living in Fairfield Co., SC when they arrived in 1770. THOMAS PHILLIPS This Thomas was obviously not the son of Robert because Robert’s son was under age in 1791. Therefore this Thomas was much older in that he was recognized as a head of household. No Thomas Phillips ever showed in the Fairfield Co. Censuses of 1790, 1800, 1810, or 1820. It is possible that he lived in an adjoining county or state or had died. Thomas was most likely the son of John Phillips and the brother of Robert Phillips. In 1791 in his will Robert Phillips stated that he had purchased 40 acres from his brother Thomas Phillips. WILLIAM PHILLIPS William Phillips was most likely the son of John Phillips and the brother of Robert Phillips. In Robert Phillips’ Will it said William was under 21 and gave Thomas and William the mare which suggested they may have lived on the same farm. On 6 November 1793 William Phillips wrote a will. David McCreight, John McVea, and D. Hamilton witnessed the will. The executors were Edward Martin and James Neely. The character of the will suggested that he was not married and had no children because everything was willed to his mother, Jane, brothers and sisters, and nephews. Jane Phillips, my mother, twenty pounds John Phillips, my nephew, 200 acres of my plantation where I live but he must pay brother and sister William Phillips, my nephew, to receive 15 pounds from John Phillips who promised to pay Mary (Phillips) Campbell, my sister, to be paid 15 pounds by brother John Phillips who promised to pay Thomas, my nephew, to receive 50 acres if he promise to pay sisters Jane and Betty Phillips John Sloane, Jr., a nephew, to receive 100 acres of the plantation where William lived (a tract adjoining Thomas Gladney's land including a spring. If he promised to pay ten pounds to the children of his sister Elizabeth over a period of seven years. Elizabeth, my sister's children, ten pounds from John Sloane Mary Campbell, five pounds from John Sloane Mary, Jane and Elizabeth my sister equally divide my personal property James, my nephew, to receive five pounds from my personal property The will was proved 14 January 1794 and was recorded 23 January 1794 The appraisers were Hugh Campbell Sr., Robert Phillips, and Robert Martin. In the settlement records it stated “ The Estate Of Thomas and William Phillips to James Rogers” for some service. This suggests that Thomas had died before William Phillips but their estates were some how tied together. The question is how and what did this mean? CHAPTER 7 THE PHILLIPS - NEELY CONNECTION It is certain that Nancy Neely married a Phillips and lived in Fairfield County, SC. James Neely, Nancy’s brother, died and left a will that tied back to Antrim County, Ireland where some of his family lived at the time of his death and named sisters, and nephews and nieces who lived in Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee. In attempt to identify Nancy Neely Phillips a comparison was made to the children in the will of Robert Phillips and his wife who was named Agnes. The fit was good except for the different name Agnes versus Nancy. A genealogist reviewed the data and stated that his experience with names in Ireland he found that Nancy is often the same as Agnes, similarly Mary was often called “Polly”. Nancy does not show in the Fairfield Co., SC Census of 1810 or 1820 for whatever the reason. However, if Nancy and Agnes are the same person, Agnes sold land in Fairfield Co., SC as late as 23 Apr. 1810. Neither name appears in the Giles Co., Census of 1820 or earlier. All of Nancy (Neely) Phillips’ children left SC. tax lists. JAMES NEELY’S WILL James Neely was born in Antrim County Ireland. He had a brother John, and sisters Margaret, Nancy and Elizabeth Neely. Elizabeth, James, and Nancy came to America. James lived and died in Fairfield Co., SC On 25 March 1824 James Neely wrote a will that was witnessed by J. N. Harvey, John Kelso, and Sarah Walker. In answer to a query on the Internet, documentation in Fairfield Co., SC Deed Book V, showed that on 21 August 1812, John and Thomas Phillips of GILES CO., TN sold land to John Bones of Fairfield Co., on Mill Creek, land originally granted to John Phillips on June 16, 1768 and part of a tract granted to Adam Blair on 5 Feb 1787. Mary Phillips, wife of John, and Elizabeth, wife of Thomas, signed dower rights. The answer to the query also included another entry: 1786, Feb. 10th , BK “K”, p. 361 Jennett (also referred to as Jenny and Jean) “of Mill Creek” in SC to Robert Phillips, planter of Jackson’s Creek, “for one whole year “ indenture of 80 acres part of survey of 200 acres originally granted to John Rogers, formerly of Jackson’s Creek. Wit: John Sloan and Mary Phillips. Jennet made her mark Rec. Nov. 25, 1796. Note : This land transaction might sort out who was the husband of Nancy (Neely) Phillips. That is if the land passed from John Phillips who received the grant through the family it might answer that question. Perhaps someone has already sorted out the different James, John, Robert, Thomas, and William Phillips. The Giles Co. Census of 1820 showed that John Arnett, James N. Phillips, Andrew Neale (beside James), Hugh Campbell, Alexander and Jonas Harvey (beside Campbell), and Robert B. Harvey were still in Note: It appears that the four Phillips men (Irish) who settled near Hugh Campbell were James John, Thomas, and William Phillips, Hugh Campbell’s the brothers - in - law. They came to Giles Co., TN ca 1811 and settled in Irishtown beside their brother - in - law. HUGH & ELIZABETH (PHILLIPS) CAMPBELL According to an interview with Mr. W. P. Richardson of Lauderdale Co., AL Hugh and Elizabeth Phillips Campbell lived in Giles County until their death. Hugh Campbell was born in SC on 17 March 1782.and died 14 February 1873 at Prospect, TN and is buried in the Campbell Cemetery. Hugh and Elizabeth were married before 1810 and had five children: 1) James Boon., 1810 - 1876; 2) Hugh 1813 - 1881; 3) John Polk., 1813 - 1883; 4) Son name unknown, 1817 - ?; and Gustin T. Campbell, 1819 - 1898. All of the children were born in Giles Co., TN. Elizabeth died in between March 1819 and March 1820 based on the birth of his first child by his second wife. Hugh was married a second time to Mary Snipes and their children were Thomas J., 1821 - 1890; Mary J., 1822 - 1881; Daughter name unknown, 1824 - ?; and Sarah A. Campbell 1826 - 1901. CHAPTER 9 PHILLIPS MIGRATE TO INDIANA GIBSON CO., IN By 1815 John and William Phillips moved from Giles Co., TN to Gibson Co., IN. They may have moved to KY before moving to Gibson, IN. Their first cousin, Betsy (Harvey) Neele, moved to Hickman Co., KY and her descendants were living there as late as 1830. Hickman is near Gibson Co., IN. On 19 March 1819 the Gibson Co. Probate Court appointed William Phillips, brother of John Phillips deceased, the guardian of John's minor children: Alexander, 11; Nancy, 9; Polly, 5; Jane, 2: Robert, 18and Sarah Phillips, 16. In the History of Gibson County Sarah Phillips Gardner stated that they emigrated from Fairfield Co., SC in 1813. Alexander stated that he was a native of TN. Note : Alexander stated that he was born in TN and that means that John Phillips left SC and was in TN by 1808. The 1850 Census of Gibson Co., IN showed that Alexander Phillips was in NC. JOHN PHILLIPS OF SC, TN, & GIBSON CO., IN (1780 - 1818) According to the charts of Merle J. Moore, Jr. a descendant of John Phillips of Gibson Co. IN, John was born in Fairfield Co., SC ca 1780 and died in Gibson Co., IN 12 January 1818. In 1798 he was married in SC to Mary (Polly) Harvey born in 1784 in Ireland and died in Gibson Co., IN 29 August 1847. ROBERT PHILLIPS OF FAIRFIELD CO., SC Robert Phillips of Fairfield Co., SC was the father of John Phillips. Robert was born in 1755 (place?) and died 14 January 1792 in Fairfield Co., SC. His wife was named Agnes. Note : The chart stated that Agnes was the mother of John Phillips. If this is true Agnes was the same person as Nancy Neely Phillips as documented in the James Neely Will of Fairfield Co., SC. JOHN PHILLIPS OF FAIRFIELD CO. SC (1734 - 1778) John Phillips was born in 1734 in England (?) and died on 16 October 1778 in Fairfield Co., SC. Jane was the wife of John but Jane's last name is unknown at this time. See the information in Chapter 5. WILLIAM J. PHILLIPS OF SC, TN, AND GIBSON CO., IN William was the brother of John Phillips, deceased. A chart submitted to the Williard Library , Evansville, IN by June Vore Phillips, Hazelton, IN stated that William was born in SC and died in Gibson Co., IN ca 1846. He was married to Elizabeth Harvey who was born in Ireland and died in Gibson Co., IN. They had a son, Thomas Alexander Phillips, born 23 may 1829 in Gibson Co., and died in Pike Co., IN 22 March 1876. Thomas married Harriet Davidson and they had a son, William Joseph Phillips, who was born 7 July 1855 in Gibson Co., IN and died in Pike Co.. IN on 17 October 1938. Frankie Eads of Princeton, IN submitted a chart to the Willard Library. Nancy E. Phillips, a daughter of William J. Phillips, was born ca 1828 and died in Gibson Co., IN 28 January 1872. She was married to Abraham Kirk. CHAPTER 10 PHILLIPS MIGRATE TO ALABAMA In 1830 of Lauderdale County, AL there were twelve Phillips families who were head of household: Grey, James N (50-60 years old), Jessee, John , Joseph, Josiah, Sebry, Sterling, Thomas (30-40), Thomas (40-50), William (30-40), and William B. (20-30) Phillips. The 1840 Census of Lauderdale Co., AL contained fifteen Phillips families who were head of household: Three were listed as simply J. Phillips, one as M. Phillips, and three as W. Phillips. The others names were Jack, John, Mary, Robert, Thomas, Thomas M., W. C., and W. C. Phillips, Jr. Except for James and Thomas Phillips, no documentation has been found which would link any of these Phillips families to Fairfield Co., SC. JAMES NEELY PHILLIPS Lauderdale Co., AL Court Records, dated 17 June 1826 show that James Neely and Thomas Phillips had a dispute about a loan that was made in 1820. This places them in Lauderdale Co. between 1820 and 1826. The 1830 Census of Lauderdale Co., AL shows that James Neely and Thomas Phillips families were in AL.. John Arnett, Alexander Harvey, and Robert Harvey were in Center Star, Lauderdale Co., AL. On 8 October 1832 James Neely Phillips purchased land in Center Star near Thomas Phillips. This land was also near Jack Phillips who was about the same age. No connection relationship has been proven between Jack and James and Thomas. On 21 September 1833 William C. Phillips and Alexander Harvey certified that the inventory of the Estate of James N. Phillips was current. The administration of this Estate continued through 20 January 1840. In the 1840 Census of Lauderdale Co. Mary Philips, widow of James N. Philips, was the head of household and age 50-60, with a male 30-40 (James?), female 15-20 (James’ wife), female 10-15, and female under 5 (James’ daughter?). WILLIAM CARROLL PHILLIPS William C. Phillips was born 6 December 1818 in TN and on 18 March 1901 died in Lauderdale Co., AL. On 9 November 1838 he was married to Louisa Allen born September 1823 in AL and on 16 may 1915 died at home in Lauderdale Co., AL. They are buried in the Phillips Cemetery at Center Star, AL. They had eleven children: Susan (1840), Mary (1842), Nancy (1844), William A. (1846), Elizabeth (1848), Dorah (1851), James C.. (1854), Benjamin B. (1858), Martha (1864) and John C. Phillips (1868). There is no direct evidence that William C. Phillips was the son of James Neely Phillips. The only connection is the fact that he was the administrator of the Estate. Research for a document to link the two men continues. CHAPTER 11 PHILLIPS MIGRATED TO ARKANSAS MARY PHILLIPS James Phillips’ widow apparently left AL with other family members. In HH #199 in the 1850 Census of Benton Co., AR Mary Phillips was 65 years old (b 1785) Ireland and others in the household were Martha, 42 (b 1808) SC; Betsy, 24 (1826) AL; and Tabitha, 14 (b 1836). Note : Martha and Betsy may have been children of Mary but Tabitha was probably a grandchild. She was not a child of James N. Phillips because he died ca 1832. JAMES PHILLIPS James was born in TN ca 1825. On 3 Nov. 1833 he was married to Lucinda Wilson in Lauderdale Co., AL. He was in the Benton Co., AR Census of 1850 in HH# 198 next to Mary Phillips. It listed James, 35 and wife Lucinda, 32, both born in TN. Children: Elisha A., 13 born AL, and James, 11, Robert, 9, John, 7, Thomas, 5, Able, 3, and Frances , 1, all born in AR. James and Lucinda were in the 1860 census of Benton Co. with children Liza, Robert, John, Thomas, Abraham, Francis, Elizabeth, Jasper, and Abraham Phillips. Note : James Phillips, son of James Neely,Phillips, stated in the Census of 1850 that he was born in TN in 1825. If this is correct the Phillips moved from TN to AL in 1825 THOMAS PHILLIPS Research on Thomas Phillips of AR was done by Martin Jarrell of Granbury, TX. His research showed that Thomas Phillips was born in 1791 in SC and died in Benton Co., AR after 1850. Thomas married Elizabeth. In a visit to Benton Co., AR to follow-up on Jarrell’s work, it was learned from a History of Benton Co., AR “Cornerstone Families” that Elizabeth’s last name was Looney. Thomas and Elizabeth’s son, Thomas Alexander Phillips, married Mary Frances Kendrick, daughter of Obediah and Patsy Kendrick. They had seven children: Martha Ann, George Lafayette, William Thomas, Robert Woodrow, Susan Arbella, and Columbus Monroe Phillips. Their children were: Female (1810-20), William C. (1815), Female (1815-20), Female (1820-25), Wilson (1820-25 AL died in Washington Co., AR), Female (1825-30), Nancy (1825-30), Female (1840), and Alexander (1835-37 AL died in Wash. Co., AR) Jarrell worked his line William C. Phillips and thought he was the son of James Neely Phillips. William C. Phillips married Nancy French. Six children were identified: John, Wilson, James Alexander, Thomas, and Robert William Phillips. He showed that Wilson married Sarah Jane Terry and had children: Marinda (md Frank Weathers), Medora (md Martin Jarrell), Rufus Wilson, (md Edna Jones), Alice J., Mary Ellen Md Joe Davis), William Henry, Nancy H., John A., Susan Pearl (md Frank Hughes), J. R., Thomas Harrison (md Maude Wilson), Claude Elmore (md Brady Fletcher) and Goodhue Phillips (md Rosa Mills). MASON PHILLIPS Mason Phillips was born on 8 May 1800 in SC and died near Lowell, AR on 27 August 1877 in Benton Co., AR. On 13 February 1825 Mason married Deborah Kendrick (in Lauderdale Co., AL) who was born 2 February 1802 and died 3 September 1863 in Benton Co., AR.. They are buried in the Phillips Cemetery. They had eleven children: John C. (1825 AL), Mary E. (1827 AL), Bransom (1829 AL), Benjamin W. (1831 AL), William C. (1833 AR), Mason (1836 AR), Rebecca (1837 AR), Deborah (1839 AR), Robert B. (1842 AR), Amanda (1844), Seaborn G. (1848 AR), and Susan E. Phillips (1850 AR). Note : Jarrell thought that Mason was a son of James Neely Phillips. The name Mason is used in the Jack Phillips line of Lauderdale Co., AL but was never used in any other line. REFERENCES Each statement is backed by a document or interview. BARWICK / PHILLIPS

[Ed note - his mention of Phillips Book of Middle TN appears not to be the same as what is above/jm]

Did I tell you that I wrote a PHILLIPS book on the PHILLIPS of Middle TN - a general approach and the remainder of the book concentrates on John PHILLIPS b ca 1750 Rev. Soldier in the NC Line, in 1824 applied for pension there and died in Lawrence Co., TN. I tried to tie John "Jack" PHILLIPS, my mother's Phillips Line, to the Rev soldier. Jack b ca 1784 in NC or SC d. 1868 Laud. Co., AL. I belive Jack was somehow tied to James BARWICK family in the Darlington SC District in late 1700's. The name BARWICK is in the family names handed down. An Elizabeth PHILLIPS did marry James BARWICK in SC.

At first I thought Jack and James Neely PHILLIPS were brothers. John, James, Thomas all lived close to each other in Center Star, AL. Then I found that James' brother went to Gibson Co, TN and died there in 1818. So now believe Jack may have been a cousin.

Anyway thought you may have something on this line.

GRIGSBY / LAND

I am doing research on my LAND family that settled in Gibson Co in the early 1830's. I have found out that my great grandfather, Abraham LAND (the second), got a divorce from his first wife, Mary GRIGSBY, about 1865-67. In researching the divorce records, did you come across that name? I did go to the court house in Princeton a couple of summers ago and found nothing. Thanks so much. Helen Keusch

HISTORY OF GIBSON CO, IN (1914) / PAVEY / UNDERGROUND RR

I was trying to find out when the PAVEY family came to Gibson Co. I beleive all PAVEY's are related. My sisters and I were raised on a farm in Oakland City.

I have a 1200 page book "The History of Gibson County" printed in 1914. I'm in California but my sister has it for safe keeping. She live in Gibson Co. My name is John M. Pavey.

My sister has the book, but does not have a computer. I will have her take a look to see who wrote and published it, etc. My grandfather told me he got the book as a gift in the '20's and that there was only ten made.

There are several bios. in that book with pics. The book is in fine condition except for the binder. It tells about the Underground RR in Gibson Co., the Erie canal, railroad tracks in the middle of the White river near the mouth. I've seen them. As you can tell I've read the book and there is a lot of info in it. It will tell you where family cabins were at in the 1820 around the county and forts. Wray radio sits on the site of one of them the best I can figure. Well I've bored you. Enough for now, until next time.

CRABTREE / EDWARD / GRIGSBY / LAND

I have much of the same material you e-mailed me. I was curious if you ran across any LAND/GRIGSBY divorces between 1865-1867. I don't know if the divorce was filed in Gibson or Posey Co.

Abe LAND was a resident of Gibson and married Mary GRIGSBY in Gibson Co. in 1865 after he came home from the Civil War. He married Narcissa CRABTREE in April of 1867 in Posey Co. Abe and Narcissa are my great-grandparents. I always thought that Mary died maybe in childbirth because Abe and Narcissa's first child came 6 months before they were married and that Narcissa raised the baby as her own. But a distant cousin told me differently and had the divorce court records, but not with her at that time. The stork seemed to have arrived a little early for Abe and Narcissa. I have searched both court houses in Princeton and Mt. Vernon for the divorce records, found interesting items but not what I am looking for. And the distant cousin seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth.

If you do come across the records, please e-mail me. And are you still wanting biographies of Gibson Co. settlers? I think I now know enough to write one for Abe and Narcissa, and his father who also was Abraham and Sara EDWARDS LAND. They settled in Johnson Twp--about 1 mile east of New Liberty in the early 1830's. The LAND in Gibson Co belong to Abraham and Sara. The Richard LAND is a cousin, I think. Thanks for answering.
