(Most of the documents were assembled in the 1920's, but often refer to events from much earlier.  There is a tremendous amount of detail referring to proof of family relationships.)

William Simmons, being first duly sworn on his oath deposes and says, that he was personally acquainted with John W. Butler, who on the 2nd day of February, 1899 executed a deed of conveyance to Columbia Building and Loan Assoc. for lots 30 & 31 in Hall and Stockwell's Enlargement to the Town of Patoka, in Gibson County Indiana, and he positively knows that at the time of executing said deed of conveyance, the said John W. Butler was a widower and had no living wife. Affiant further says he was personally acquainted with Beriller Hodges, who in life and at the time of his death was the owner of the lots previously described, and he positively knows that said Beriller Hodges, departed this life, in testate, in the spring of 1900, leaving her surviving no husband, and no children, but left as her heirs and only heirs at law, the children of a deceased son Lihugh Chaves, who died prior to the death of said Beriller Hodges, said Lihugh Chaves, sometimes spelled Chavious, left him surviving his widow Sarah J Chaves, now the wife of William Simmons, this affiant and the following named children, Effie Chaves, who afterward intermarried with Fred Smith, Ora Chaves, who afterward intermarried with Louis Lockett, Luther Chaves and Harry Chaves.
