He was wounded twice, the first in fight of Petersburg, on June 16, 1864, and again on April 6, 1865, while leading his company at Amelia Court House, Virginia a few days before Gen. Lee surrendered at Appomattox. Bartholonew was severly wounded and left on field to die. He regained consciousness and was picked up and moved by his men to hospital. He survived, returned to Fairmount Township and later married Miss Sarah E. Gibson of Hamilton County IN and fathered 6 children by her.

Eli was 38 years old, 5 feet 8 inches, dark complexion. He had blue eyes and brown hair. He was born in Guernsey, Ohio and was a farmer by occupation. His residence when drafted: 11 Coug Desk?? (Don't know what that means) Eli died on the 19 Feb 1865, of disease in the hospital of the 1st Division, 17 Army Corps. He was a Private. Eli and his wife Sarah and 4 children moved from Ohio to Indiana, they had 1 child born in Ind. the year before he died. He and his wife's brother-in-law, John Selfridge, were both residents of Pleasant Twp. at the time of their enlistments. John Selfridge was in Co. K. Resident of Van Buren from 1872 til his death. Born in Handcock County, IN. He enlisted 8-8-63 in Co.F, 84th Reg. and mustered out of Ft. Wayne.In his first battle, at Chickamauga, Mr. Beck was saved only by a belt buckle, which was struck squarely by a Confederate bullet. During battle of Kenesaw Mt., Mr. Beck's brother Cornelius was wounded and later died in hospital. Mr. Beck stripped himself of all accouterments and carried his bro. to safety with hundreds of Conf. soldiers looking on. As Mr. Beck put it,"not one of them fired a shot at us". While on guard duty near Lovejoy Station, he became severely wounded and walked 1/2 mile for medical treatment. In Dec., 1865 he married Miss Clara Brewer and fathered 4 children by her; Mrs. Ruth Camblin, Mrs. Frank Anderson, Everett, and a child that died in infancy. Serving in Co H, 38th NORTH CAROLINA Inf., CSA, with the Army of Northern Virginia, under Gen. Robert E. Lee. His mother was left to raise her 4 children. She gave the 2 oldest over to the County who sold them at auction to be used as slavery, called 'bound boys'. Luckily William and his brother were bought and raised by Quaker families who did not believe in slavery. William married Nancy Ferguson of Randolph Co., North Carolina and started his family. He served in the war until 1865 and moved his family w/3 children; James, Molly, and Sally to Indiana. They had Julia in Indiana. 17 years later they moved to Grant County, IN. Vol. Inf., with which he served until the close of hostilities, at which time he resumed his farming operations in Monroe Twp. He met and fell in love with Nancy Clementine Akers while working on his father''s farm. Marriage was delayed due to his entering war. The horse he rode was named Clementine after his sweetheart. He married her 1 year after discharge from war. After 5 years of marriage he and his growing family (grew to 10 children in all) moved to Grant Co. and purchased 80 acres for $1,300. the children were; Charles, Anna, Leroy, Jesse, Cornelius, Lucius, Henry Nixon, Clyde, Nettie Fern, and Eulatie. Thomas and Clementine prospered financially and established each of their children with 80 acres. Tom took great pride in the quality of his livestock, particular, the breeding of Belgium horses. He was largely responsible for the building of roads in his area. Past the age of 70, he purchased the first automobile in his area, the Brisco which was only produced from 1914 - 1921.
