Corey Cemetery

Van Buren Township lies in the north east corner of Grant County and is drained
by Black Creek and Little Black Creek which flow to the east and empty into the
Salamonie River. The land in this township is generally low and in the early day had
swamps which were named McCowen's Prairie, Kirk's Prairie and Tippy's. These prairies
were covered with tall grass in the summer and with deep water in the spring.
The early comers selected the higher ground for the sites of their homes and then
proceeded to drain the swamps which gave them the fine farms that their descendants are
enjoying today.
Stevens Corey came in 1839 and settled in Section #11 of this township. He
built his home on a bluff overlooking Black Creek. Michael Roush entered land in this
same section in 1836. His little daughter, Mary, died March 8, 1840 and was the first to
be buried in what is now called the Corey Cemetery.
In the early days the famous Fort Wayne, Indianapolis Road passed through Grant
County. It passed the Corey Cemetery to the east. Black Creek is near by. This is one of
the beauty spots of the county. It is off the main highway and the serenity of the place
makes it such as one loves to find when the heart is bowed down. Native trees surround
it and a deep carpet of grass prevents even a footfall from being heard.
Burials have been made here for more than a century. The pioneers of the
township lie here in peace and their descendants are still being brought back to their
fathers and mothers home.
Lavanner Corey was one of the early doctors of the county. In April of 1879 he
and his wife and Lewis Landess and his wife deeded two and eighty-five hundredths
acres to the Corey Cemetery Association. A part of this deed is here copied.
"This indenture witnesseth that we, Lavanner Corey and Mary E. Corey his wife
and Lewis Landess and Hannah Landess his wife of Grant County in the State of Indiana,
convey and warrant to the Corey Cemetery Association in the State of Indiana for the
sum of $50. the following real estate in Grant County in the State of Indiana.**********
in Section #11 and containing two and eighty-five hundredths acres."

Dated April 29, 1879.

The above was written by the DAR in the 1940's.
This cemetery was read by Rick and Karen Marshall and Karen's sister, Janet Eastburn.
They have done a fantastic job. It was an every name read. DAR had recorded 139 individuals.
They have documented 279 people buried here. I have noted that about 50 or so individuals
were buried here after 1900 and most burials here seemed to have almost stopped after World
War I. The last date a burial was made was in 1949. The cemetery is located in Section 11
Township 25 N. Range 9 E. To find this cemetery is a little tricky. The best way is to take
St. Rd. 5 north out of Van Buren to 500 N. then turn east or right onto 500 N. and proceed to
1000 E. Turn left or north on 1000 E. and go to what used to be 550 N. Turn right or east
on this unmarked road. This road is not marked anymore as the county has abandoned it. It
is halfway between 500 N. and 600 N. Although abandoned by the county it is well maintained
and graveled and will take you all the way back to the cemetery which is in the middle of the
mile.
This cemetery has been totally vandalized. Almost all the headstones and family
markers are down and broken or lost. However recently there has been much effort in
restoring this cemetery. My last trip there I was amazed at the amount of work that has
been done. Of course no amount of work can completely undo the damage that has been done.
There is no way they will ever be able to tell where all the markers were originally.
According to "Whitson's History 'John Duckwall was in the War of 1812 and was at
Detroit in Hull's surrender". He is buried in this cemetery with no mention of his service
noted on his stone. Also from "Whitson's History" we find that Mark Lindsey son of Joseph
Lindsey was killed by falling into a kettle of potash and Elias Sinclair (St. Clair) was
caught in machinery at a mill and was killed.
