MCKINNEY/LUGAR CREEK CEMETERY

Located east of Marion on the Monroe Pike in Section #12 of Center Township,
this small cemetery bears the name of an early settler in Grant County. Lugar Creek
flows near by and its name is sometimes used by those who have forgotten the donor of
the land on which this cemetery is. Christena Wolff was buried April 15, 1840 age 80
years. There are burials being made there but seldom.
Whitson's history relates that Joseph Lugar was the first settler in Monroe
Township in 1831. His property was in Section #7. In 1836 he sold his claim to Dr.
William McKinney who resided there until his death in 1860. The deed to this cemetery
was signed by the pioneer doctor when he had to be propped up in his bed to write his
name. He desired to be buried near where he had lived for so long.
The History of 1885 says that Virginia Lugar was the first person to die in Monroe
Township and was buried not far from the home of Andrew Ferguson. This farm was
also owned by Dr. McKinney. "George Lugar settled on Lugar Creek in the late 1820's"
History of 1885. This history also says that "A little child of Joseph Miller was the first
one buried in the Lugar Creek Cemetery.
The above was written by the DAR in the 1940's.
I visited this cemetery in late July of 1997. Burials are still being made there
occasionally. I noticed a few fairly large bases without headstones. These appear as if
maybe those grave's were moved to another location, which could account for the few I didn't
find.
This cemetery is located in Section 12 Twp. 24 N. Range 8 E., on that part of the
Monroe Pike designated as County Road 100 S. Lugar Creek flows just to the north of
this cemetery.
There was a fine old church at this cemetery, but vandals burned it down just a
few years back. I was amazed at the number of stones that were down in this cemetery.
From the road you can't tell there is so much damage. I estimate at least a quarter of the
grave markers were down and almost below the surface of the ground. Makes you
wonder what may really be there, that might have been missed 50 years ago when the
DAR first read this cemetery. These cemeteries on the back roads of our county are soon
to be forgotten. The ravages of time, elements and the vandalism are taking their toll.
The township trustee is making sure all the cemeteries are mowed but something needs
to be done with the many stones that are down, before they sink completely beneath the
surface.
