Riverside/Gas City/Jonesboro I.O.O.F. Cemetery

Riverside Cemetery lies in Mill Township on the east bank of the beautiful
Mississinewa River adjoining Gas City. It is a beautiful place and a popular one
for burials. The title to the cemetery is not clear to me but it is said to be
owned by the Masonic Order of Jonesboro. It is identified on the map in the assessor's
office as the I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Deed Book K page 292 says "This indenture made the
28th day of September 1831 between Nathan Coggeshall and Samuel Parker of Wayne Co.,
of Grant County State of Indiana deed to Levi D. Pierce, Thomas Jay and W.F. Spence
for the sum of $50. a plot of ground containing one acre in the north west quarter of
section #4 in township 23. Levi D. Pierce, Thomas Jay and W.F. Spence being trustees
for Amama Lodge # 82 of the I.O.O.F. This to be used for the purpose of a burying
ground."
"The said Jonathan Coggeshall and Samuel Parker, Abigail Coggeshall and Nancy
E. Parker their wives relinquish their dower in this said premises."
Deed book L page 233 "Levi D. Pierce, Thomas Jay and W.F. Spence of the first
part and Samuel S. Horne, Samuel Jay and Samuel Price of the second part for the sum of
$34. a tract of land containing two-thirds of an acre for the purpose of a public
burying ground. Thomas Jay, Levi D. Pierce and W.F. Spence as trustees in trust for
Amama Lodge # 82 I.O.O.F."
Deed Book #57 page 288 date Sept. 26, 1892. The court quieted the title to this
two-thirds acre and declared that the plaintiff (The I.O.O.F. Lodge) "is therefore
ordered, adjudged and decreed by the court to be said owner in fee simple and entitles
to the above described real estate."
This little part of the cemetery is still a weedy portion of the place and seldom
used. Several grave markers are in there, the earliest being that of Nelson Ball who
died September 17, 1851.
The above was written by the DAR in the 1940's.
The above description of land, in Section # 4 dated 28 Sept. 1831, pertains to
the original Jonesboro Cemetery which laid just south of the original plat of Jonesboro.
This cemetery was moved to the current site of Riverside Cemetery in Section # 33. A
railroad went through where the original site of the Jonesboro Cemetery was, just east
of the J.C. Knight School. At the time it was moved Gas City was still Harrisburg. But
the railroad called the depot that was very close to the present site of Riverside
Cemetery the East Jonesboro Depot. This was done so as to not confuse Harrisburg, Ind.
with Harrisburg, Penn. That may be why the little cemetery maintained it's name even
though it was no longer in Jonesboro.
Another portion of Riverside was moved from the original Gas City Cemetery
which was located in the southeast portion of the town, at the Seventh Street jog of
South "H" Street. It is said that the cemetery was established by Welch workers that
came to Gas City to work in the factories of the Boom-Days of 1892 - 1910. It is
believed that the burials made at this cemetey were removed to Riverside Cemetery. The
original location would have been in Section # 3 of Mill Township.
What we have learned is that Riverside Cemetery in Gas City, Ind. Mill Township
in Section # 33 is actually 4 cemeteries combined. The old Jonesboro Cemetery in
Section # 4, the old Gas City Cemetery in Section # 3 and the original East Jonesboro
that was already located in Section # 33 and the present day Riverside Cemetery which
was platted in 1906.
