Walnut Creek Cemetery

This old cemetery a little north and a half mile east of Gas City dates back to the
very earliest days of the county. Silas Parks came to the county in 1835 and in 1837 his
little daughter Caroline died of croup and was buried here. The History of 1883 names
her and "a son of Isaiah Roberds as being the first deaths and both interred in Walnut
Creek Cemetery.
Diligent inquiry did not reveal any one who could remember that a church ever
stood here. A grand daughter of Silas Parks said that she remembered hearing her mother
say that her grandfather preached in a little log church that stood near this cemetery but
she had no knowledge of what ever had happened to it. Silas Parks was a minister for the
Disciples Church and a man prominent in county affairs.
Record Book B page 186 in the Grant County Recorder's office says "From John
Adamson to the trustees of C. Church this indenture is made and concluded this
fourteenth day of February, in the year of Our Lord eighteen hundred and thirty eight - by
and between John Adamson and the society stiled (styled) by the name of Christian
Church in said county on Walnut Creek and lying in said county" - then follows a
description of the land - "for the express purpose for burying ground and meeting house.
Sarah Adamson wife of John Adamson doth hereby relinquish her right of dower to the
above described tract of land."
			Witness: William Roberds
					George W. Heltin
On Page 187 of Record Book S John Troxel and his wife Anna deed "a parcel of
ground" to this same church for the sum of twenty - five cents. John Adamson received
the sum of one dollar for his land.
This is what the DAR wrote in the 1940's.
This cemetery was sometimes referred to in the older history books as the Lower
Walnut Creek Graveyard. They are one and the same. The area surrounding this cemetery
was called Slabtown, but has long since lost that name. I noted four marked Civil War
Soldiers buried here.
The oldest map I have shows there was a church on the east end of the cemetery and
also school No. 1 was at the nearest crossroads to the east. I believe this was the one
they referred to as the Candy School since it was on the land belonging to Jacob Candy.
To the west of the cemetery was a mill. All this was in existence long before there was
a Harrisburg which later became Gas City. I believe there was once a store and a post
office also in this area, owned by the Overman family.
It is located on the south side of North H Street, near the present Mississinewa
High School. The creek that flows nearby to the west was once the Lower Walnut
Creek, hence the name given to this cemetery. Walnut Creek flows to the north of this
cemetery.
