The Ferguson’s of Greene County

The first Ferguson to settle in Greene County Indiana was William Ferguson. William was born in 1793 in Glasgow, Scotland and served three years in the British Army under Price Regent George IV.

William married Christian Cullen in Scotland and they were blessed with four children. William left for the Americas and settled in New York State then on to Beaver County Pennsylvania. Not much is known by this author of the other three children although all four came with William and Christian to Pennsylvania.

In 1851, William, Christian and one son, James moved to Greene County Indiana. They settled near the town of Scotland, Indiana and were members of the Presbyterian Church.

James Ferguson, born in Scotland in 1819 and came to the United States at five years old. [biography in 1884 history; his obituary]

In 1844, James married Margaret Baker in Pennsylvania and they were blessed with ten children. In 1851, James and Margaret moved with James’s father and mother to Greene County Indiana and started farming. They lived not far from Doans, Indiana and were members of the Methodist Church there. It was also said that James owned and operated a grist mill in Doans. Below is a list of the ten children born to James and Margaret.
