He was the great-great-grandson of the first governor of Virginia. Within twelve years his father and forfeited his propert having furnished bail for a man who left the country. He then took his family to Portage county, Ohio where he entered a claim

His will is dated 12 Sept. 1887 and recorded 28 Sept. 1904 WIll Bk. 3 pg.57-8 Greene county, Indiana.
JESSE POWNALL DEAD.

Jesse POWNALL, one of the pioneers of Greene county and the section north of Odon, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William MOORE, August 26, aged 89 years, 4 months, and 15 days.

Mr. POWNALL was born in West Virginia, April 11, 1815. He later moved to Ohio, and in Portage county, that state, on January 24, 1839 he married Nancy M. SWIFT, who died in November 1874.

While living in Ohio, in 1840 he united with the Christian church, and at the time of his death was an active member in the church of that denomination at Newberry.

He was the father of sex children, four of whom are living. They are Mrs. Hiram HUGUNIN, Mrs. William MOORE, George W. and John B. POWNALL. They are all well known, being among our best citizens of this vicinity.

The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. C. H. Buchanan at M. Nebo Saturday morning. Burial took place in the Chandler cemetery.

When Nancy was the age of twelve years, her mother left her with a family in Portage county, Ohio. She educated herself and became a school teacher. There she met Jesse Pownall and they married. Five or more chiildren were born to them. In 1842 they mover to Wabash county, Indiana and enterd a claim. Their nearest neighbor lived five miles away, an Indian who had married a white girl and was known as 'Indian Joe'. The nearest doctor was 35 miles away.

Nancy Swift had two sisters, Samantha (Swift) Hally and Lucia (Swift) Calvin and a brother John Swift who was founder of the packing company by that name in Chicago, COok, Illinois. He was one of the lucky '49's' of the gold rush to California and went to Chicago where he started the meat packing firm. He used to stope at Nancy (Swift) Pownall's house in Wabash on his catlle and hog buying trips between Cincinnati and Chicago. On one such trip he became ill with quinsy and died in Cincinnati. The Swift company was so named in his honor. She was the daughter of Jrieah Delano and Hannah (Ferguson) Swift her siblings were: Chloe SWIFT, Samatha SWIFT, Lucia A. SWIFT, Lucian SWIFT, Emily SWIFT, Henry SWIFT, Charles SWIFT, John SWIFT, Lucinda SWIFT, and Jireh D. SWIFT Jr.

"PIONEER CALLED BY DEATH. GEO. W. POWNALL SUCCUMBS AT AGE OF EIGHTY-FIVE YEARS

George W. POWNALL, pioneer resident of this township passed away at his home north of this city last Thursday after an extended illness. Mr. POWNALL was one of the leading farmers and stock raisers of the community for many years while his health permitted. He acquired many acres of land and was much interested in growing of good cattle, sheep and mules.

He was born in Portage county, of this state, September 10, 1841 being past eighty-five years of age at the time of his death. In 1860 he came with he parents, Jesse and Nancy (SWIFT) POWNALL to this township where he has since resided.

On November 18, 1867 he was united in marriage to Alwilda FERGUSON and to this union four children were born, three of whom survive. These are Clarence, Clem and Mrs. Toletha OSBORN, all of this community. The other daughter Mrs. J. M. WINKLEPLECK preceeded her father in death by but a few days.

In 1881 Mr. POWNALL united with the Christian church under the ministry of the late Charles W. McCormick and lived a conscientious life beloved as a neighbor and friend.

Besides the wife and children he leaves grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many more distant relatives besides a great number of friends. The funeral service was held from the residence last Saturday morning at 10:00 o'clock with Rev. C. H. Buchanan in charge. Burial was made at Walnut Hill."

"BYRON POWNALL DIES MONDAY. WIDELY KNOWN FARMER OF MADISON TOWNSHIP SUCCUMBS AT AGE OF 75.

Byron POWNALL, well known resident of this community passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Otis WILLIAMS in this city last Monday morning at 7:30, his death being due to dropsy and complications arising there-from.

John Byron POWNALL was one of six children born to Jesse and Nancy SWIFT POWNALL. He was born in Wabash, Indiana July 8, 1848 and when about twelve years of age came with his parents to this township and settled on a farm north of town, where he has since spent most of his life.

April 3, 1887 he was united in marriage to Nannie KETCHAM FERGUSON and to this union one child was born. His wife passed on Dec. 5, 1898.

About four years ago Mr. POWNALL had an attack of influenza from which he never recovered and since that time he has been the constant care of his daughter, Mrs. Otis WILLIAMS, with whom he resided.

Besides the daughter he leaves four grandchildren, one brother, Geo. W. of MADISON township and three stepchildren, Mrs. Grant CALLAHAN of Muncie, Ind., J. C. FERGUSON of Brooklyn, N. Y. and Mrs. N. F. BARKLEY of this place to mourn his departure.

The funeral was held from the house Wednesday afternoon with Rev. Spainhower in charge, assisted by Revs. Buchanan and Fouts. Interment at Walnut Hill.
