DIED, at his late residence in Newberry, Greene county, Ind., on the 29th of April, Frederick Slinkard, aged 64 years, 2 months and 14 days.

He was born in North Carolina, and emigrated to Indiana in 1820, where he became an early settler of Green county, and took an active part in promoting the welfare of his county. He was married to Catharine Skomp in 1825, with whom he lived in peace and love, until his demise. After an illness of about four weeks, which he bore with true Christian fortitude, he fell asleep in the triumph of living faith. He was a worthy citizen, and an esteemed member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. In his death the family lost a kind father and husband, the Church a bright ornament, and community a valuable citizen. W. B. K.

This was handed in some weeks ago, but was misplaced, or it would have appeared sooner. Ed. Tel.

Deaths
Margaret Ann GEDDES, wife of Daniel GEDDES, of Taylor Township, died at her home last Friday afternoon about 2 o’clock of catarrhal gastritis. She had been sick for a month and during much of the time was unable to take any nourishment. At the time of her death she was aged 65 years 11 months and 20 days. She was the daughter of Isaac SKOMP, and though born in Knox County, she had spent the greater part of her life in this county.

When sixteen years of age she united with the Lutheran church; later she transferred her membership to the M. E. church, of which she was a consistent member throughout the remainder of her life. She took a great deal of delight in religious work and was known for her conscientious devotion to her Master’s service. At her special request her pastor with others held a song service in her room a short time b before she died and her feeble voice joined in the chorus. Her last words, whispered in her pastor’s ears, were a request for him to pray for her loved ones.

The funeral services were held Sunday at 11 o’clock in the M. E. church at Scotland, the Rev. J. N. BLUE being in charge, after which the remains were laid peacefully to rest in the cemetery at that place. An immense crow attend the funeral

No one in that community had a wider circle of friends and everyone who knew her esteemed her. She leaves a husband and two children; a son, Samuel GEDDES and a daughter, Mrs. Harvey MILLER.

DEATH’S HARVEST. MORRISON
Sarah Jane MORRISON, daughter of John and Jane CRAFT, was born at Knoxville, Ill., April 12, 1840, and departed this life November 24, 1926, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jane YOUNG, near Sandborn, Ind., aged eighty-six years, eight months and twelve days.

When just a mere child her father migrated from Illinois to Newberry, where he raised his family. Many years ago when the noted waterway the Erie Canal, was built through Indiana, he became a foreman and a contractor in the building of the canal and was located at Newberry.

The deceased was united in marriage September 23, 1862 to Daniel SKOMP and to this union four children were born. Two preceded her in death.

On May 9, 1870, she was left a widow, and again she was united in marriage to John E. MORRISON on April 17, 1872. To this union four children were born. Three of these children preceded her in death. Besides her own she raised four stepchildren. Two of these preceded her in death.

While yet a girl she found Jesus Christ as her Savior and united with the Missionary Baptist Church and lived a patient God fearing life. Mrs. MORRISION was very optimistic in her daily life, ambitious, loving and uncomplaining to the end, and usually wore a smile and was very patient in her suffering. Often she spoke of how she loved the Lord and did not see why He did not come for her as she was ready to embark anytime that it was the Great Master’s will.

She leaves to mourn her death, one son, Charles SKOMP, of Lyons; two daughters, Mrs. Jane YOUNG, of near Sandborn, and Mrs. May MORRISON, of Indianapolis; one stepson, at Paris Ill., one step daughter, Mrs. Callie SUMMERVILLE, of Odon; five grandchildren, many relatives and a host of friends.

The funeral was conducted by Rev. T. B. AVERY at the M. E. church in Newberry, and the body laid to rest in the old cemetery one mile south of town.

At the early age of eleven years she began an earnest christian life, uniting at first with the U. B. church at Mud Pike, but later with her husband united with the M. E. church, first at Newberry and later transfered her membership to Good Hope Church where she remained a faithful and useful member until she was transferred to the church triumphant. In many respects she was worthy of initiation. First in her devotion to her parents and as a child; to her husband as a wife; to her children, as a mother, to her God, in her fidelity to his service. Second in her bright cheerful dispostion, which was a ray of sunshine to those with whom she mingled. The funeral services which were held at Good Hope church, conducted by Rev. Breden and Dorsey, were attended by a large concourse of people. For the present we say goodbye, but it is with the thought that as the years go by and we gather home one by one that we shall meet that bright spirit glorified in the presence of our God.

DEATH'S HARVEST SKOMP
William Stewart SKOMP, son of Isaac and Hanna (Stewart) SKOMP, was born at Scotland, Indiana, on April 6, 1861.

He was reared to manhood in the neighborhood where he was born, and under the influence of a Christian home. This early training greatly influenced his life. His greatest joy was serving his Master and mingling with God's people. He united with the M. E. Church at Newberry in December 1891, under the pastorate of Rev. L. B. JOHNSON; later moving his membership to Prairie Chapel. He remained true to his faith throughout his life.

When realized that his Master had called him he expressed his readiness to go, saying he would be glad to meet his mother and his God.

On November 4, 1891, he was united in marriage to Elma M. BOYD. To this union were born two children, Cletus and Hope.

On October 29, 1905, his wife died, leaving him the care of the two children.

On April 3, 1907, he was again united in marriage to Zora EDWARDS. To this union were born four children, Austin, Geneva, Carl and William, Junior.

He departed this life October 18, 1925, at the age of sixty-four years, six months and twelve days.

He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, six children, two grandchildren; one sister, Hannah J. TERRELL, of Bellflower, California; one brother, Fred C. SKOMP, of Tillamook, Oregon; and a half brother, Reason C. SKOMP, of Odon, and many other relatives, also a host of friends whom he always held dear.

In the passing of William SKOMP, a home is left without a kind and loving husband, and the wise and helpful counsel of a father.

The funeral services were held at the M. E. Church at Lyons, Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock, with Rev. W. H. THOMPSON in charge, assisted by Rev. WATKINS. Interment was in the Walnut Hill Cemetery near Odon.

We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to neighbors and friends for their aid and sympathy during the illness and after the death of our beloved husband and father. MRS. WILLIAM SKOMP AND CHILDREN

Seven children were born to them and who lived to maturity.

Dr. T. B. RANKIN departed this life March 13, 1923, at 9 o’clock a. m. He was born May 26,1850, in Knox County, Tennessee, and came with his parents to Indiana in October of 1866. He was the oldest son of four brothers and four sisters. The brothers and sisters are: Mary J. TITUS, of Koleen; Nancy RANKIN, who died at the age of seven years; Margaret E. CALDWELL, of Marshalltown, Iowa; Harriett M. MCELROY, of Scotland, deceased; N. H. RANKIN, of Koleen; J. H. RANKIN, of Santa Ana, California, and O. S. RANKIN, of Marshalltown, Iowa.

Dr RANKIN was raised on a farm and was left at the age of thirteen with the cares of the farm while his father was a soldier of the Civil War in the Union Army. He acquired the greater part of his education in the common schools, though he attended select and normal schools some, and taught a few terms in the district schools.

He studied medicine with the late Dr. Samuel C. CRAVENS; also attended a medical school in Indianapolis, and graduated from that school and began the practice of medicine about the year of 1876, and remained in the profession, except for a few years, the balance of his life. He was successful in his practice, and will be greatly missed in the community of Scotland, as well as in other sections of the country where he practiced.

Dr. RANKIN was united in marriage to Martha SKOMP, of Scotland, a daughter of Isaac and Hannah (STEWART) SKOMP, both deceased.

In Dr. RANKIN’S religious affiliation, he was a member of the United Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife and one son, Thomas S. RANKIN, of Chicago, two sisters, three brothers, and many other friends.

The body lay in state from Tuesday noon, the thirteenth, till Thursday noon, the fifteenth, and was viewed by many friends, and in the afternoon a private funeral service was conducted by Rev. J. H. MCCANN, of Greensburg, a former pastor of the Scotland United Presbyterian church. The song service was conducted by a male quartet composed of Messrs. Stewart ASDELL, G. M. MCELROY, Charles ASDELL and George MORTLAND.

The last sad rites were conducted by the F. & a. M, by his request, on March 15, 1923.

He was a Scottish Rite Mason.

We wish to express our sincere thanks to the relatives, friends and neighbors for their help and sympathy during the sickness and after the death of our beloved husband, father and brother.

WIDOW OF THOS B. RANKIN DIES AT HOME OF HER SON
The widow of Dr. Thomas B. RANKIN, late of Scotland, died at the home of her son, T. B. RANKIN, Jr., in Chicago, on September 27. The remains were brought to BLOOMFIELD last Monday evening and at 10 a. m. Tuesday appropriate funeral services were held in the chapel of George E. KIDD's undertaking establishment. The sermon was preached by Rev. J. M. MCCANN, of Greensburg. The remains were interred in Grand View Cemetery, and the casket of her deceased husband will be removed from Scotland to this place.

A number of relatives and friends from Scotland and Odon attended the funeral.

The following sketch was read by the minister:

Martha (SKOMP) RANKIN, daughter of Isaac and Hannah SKOMP, deceased, was born and reared on a farm in Greene County, where she remained, with the exception of two years while away in school, until her marriage on November 1, 1882 to the late deceased, Thomas B. RANKIN, who was then practicing medicine in BLOOMFIELD. Her husband died March 13, 1923.

She was twice a member of the Odon Thimble Club, which she enjoyed very much.

She made two trips to California with her husband — the first a pleasure trip of six months, the second of fifteen months. They resided for a time in western Nebraska, where her husband practiced medicine.

She was an invalid for quite a long time and they spent some months camping on the old RANKIN farm, where she hoped to regain her health. She then resided in Scotland until the death of her husband, when she went to Chicago to live with her son, Thomas B. RANKIN.

She was a member of the Untied Presbyterian church from the days of her youth, and was quite strong in the faith.

Daniel Henshaw, deceased, was of Southern birth, born December 16, 1826. The death of his father when he was an infant left him to the care of his mother who removed with him to Greene County, Ind., in 1828, and afterward married William Bynum. Daniel Henshaw married Anna Dellinger for his first wife, but she and the three children born to them are now dead. He was married to Susanna (Slinkard) Shoemaker in December, 1860, and in 1861 became a member of Company C, Fifty-ninth Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and died of disease at Farmington, Tenn., July 3, 1862. Mrs. Henshaw was the daughter of Frederick Slinkard. She was born in Greene County July 1, 1827; was married to Daniel Shoemaker in August, 1848, by whom she had five children, only two Catharine E. and Fredrick S. yet living. Mr. Shoemaker died February 5, 1859, and by her last husband, Mrs. Henshaw was the mother of two children Anna (Mrs. David Nugent) being the only survivor. Mrs. Henshaw has been a member of the Lutheran Church since sixteen years old, and resides at Newberry, within sight of her birthplace. Although sorely afflicted by the death of many of her nearest and dearest relatives, she has submitted to the decrees of the All-wise Creator without murmuring, and is a firm believer in His works. - Greene county Indiana History 1884 Cass two

DEATH’S HARVEST. BRADFORD.
Jacob BRADFORD, son of George and Lucinda BRADFORD, died at his home June 29, 1922, near Owensburg, Indiana, aged sixty-eight years, one month and twenty-nine days.

He was united in marriage to Sarah E. SKOMP, August 25, 1894. To this union one child was born, it having died in infancy, and the mother departed from this life February 27, 1901. A few years later he was united in marriage to Miss Lucy WORKMAN, and to this union was born one child, Mary A. Josephine.

He is survived by his wife and daughter, one brother, George BRADFORD, of Lyons, and one sister, Mrs. Jennie KUTCH, also of Lyons, and a host of friends and relatives to mourn their loss.

He united with the Prairie Chapel Methodist church early in life, and was a devoted Christian.

For some time before his death he had been in feeble health, much of the time confined to his room and bed, but even in days of suffering no complaint was heard.

In his active life he had borne the above mentioned loss, disappointment of fondest earthly hopes with the same beautiful patience and serenity of soul, he enduring the long waiting till this change should come.

In the death of Jacob BRADFORD the community has lost a true and faithful friend and neighbor, and his wife and daughter a loving and indulgent husband and father, whose counsel and loving entreaties will be sadly missed. May we all live so that when the death angel of death hovers over us that we can say, “Well done, I am ready.

We wish to thank the friends, relatives and neighbors for their kindness shown during the sickness and after the death of our beloved husband and father, Jacob BRADFORD; also, wish to thank the undertaker, Mr. KIDD; the Revs. THOMPSON and WAGGONER, and singers for the services during our sad bereavement and also for the beautiful floral offerings.
