Lewis Rogers

1 Lewis Rogers b. Aug. 16, 1789 in PA or England, but more than likely it was PA. He d. Nov. 29, 1851 in Greene Cty., IN. He ma. Mary or Martha Hubler poss. in PA, date unknown. She was b. April 30, 1792 in IN, PA, or Germany. More than likely it was PA. She d. Aug. 31, 1854 in Greene Cty., IN. Both are buried at Fry/Sheets Cemetery, Wright Township, Greene Cty., IN.

Notes on Lewis Rogers:

Appears to have lived in Lawrence Cty. from 1820 til after 1840 on the census records. 1850 census states he was in Greene Cty., IN.

May have been born in Pennsylvania on 16 July 1787. Settled in Greene County in 1848.

There was a book I found in the Valp library in 1990 that had the above info, however, when I broached this subject to Bev Rogers Tracy, she had this to say---Back to the Rogers family. I also have the information you have got at Valparaiso, IN library. Some of the information is true and some of it has proven untrue. I contacted the lady who had sent it in when I first started searching. Their information came from relatives and old stories, and some of it from printed material in Jasonville. They believe that Lewis was born in England and that his wife was Mary Hubler born in Germany. I do not believe this as too many of their children stated on the census that their parents were born in PA. If only one of them had stated this I would have thought there was a mistake, but it shows on more than one. They stated that Oliver (which is my line) went to Missouri. He never left Jasonville and is buried in a cemetery in Sullivan County with his wife's parents, the Umphreys. The people who put the information in the history book are Robert's line of the Rogers family. I think that they have some of the Rogers family that are in different generations mixed together. I also believe that there might be a chance that there was a Lewis and Mary Hubler and that they might be the parents of the Lewis who married Martha. I have searched for a Mary Hubler, but as to yet have not found any information on her. -from Bev Tracy

Lewis Rogers in Perry County Ohio. It gave the number of the file as OH0430__.338. The date on it was April 20, 1820 recorded at Zanesville. This is the right time frame for the Lewis we are looking for. I have that he was on the 1820 Indiana census, but this is the time period in which I lost him. I found a Lewis Rogers in Washington Co., PA in 1810, but I have not found any information on him. The elderly Rogers decendant whom I used to write to that died said that she was alway told that the Rogers family came from Mercer County, PA. Washington County PA was once part of Mercer County. This would have made it very easy for the Rogers family to come down the Onio River to Ohio, on to Kentucky, and on to Indiana. I also found a Lewis "Rodgerse" listed in Hardin County KY in 1820. Hardin County is very close to Perry County, Ohio and close to the Ohio River. I don't know if any of this fits into our family or not, but it's in the right area at the right time. from Bev Tracy

I have a land deed for the estate of Lewis Rogers Sr. that transfers his land to Oliver. It is signed by Hiram Russell & Mary Ann Russell, Robert & Nancy Rogers, Lewis & Zelpha Rogers, E. R. Ellexson, Jason Rogers, and Joseph Rogers & Marcia Rogers. Then I found a deed from Oliver to Davis E. Rogers to settle an indevisable Estate of Inheritance. I also found a deed from David and Susannah Maloy to Davis E. Rogers to settle an indevisable Estate of Inheritance. I believe that Susannah Maloy is also a daughter of Lewis, but I can find no other trace of her. From Bev Tracy

Had 3 females, besides his wife listed in his household in the 1820 census. I know now that he lived on the road that was the dividing line between Lawrence and Orange Counties and that Lawrence was once a part of Orange County. From Bev Rogers Tracy

Thought this would be the easiest way rather than sending everyone a message. Linda Lockart found two entries for Lewis Rogers in Orange County. She cannot find the earliest two as that tract book has been lost during the years. If anyone is interested Lewis Rogers lived right on the Lawrence, Orange and Washington County lines. There is a road on the North side of the property Linda found and it is the line between Lawrence and Orange County. Washington County is 1 1/2 miles east of the land where he lived. Now I know why some of this children were married in all three counties.

Linda found the marriage of Robert and also two land deeds for him. She also found a land deed for a Harriet Rogers. While checking the marriage records she found Martha Rogers married John Burger July 24, 1825. This may be a daughter of Lewis and Martha Rogers. I don't know. The really odd thing is that Linda could not find when any of the Rogers land was sold. She checked the grantor and grantee records until in the 1860's. We were hoping that she could find when the land was sold, as the wife's name was almost always on land transactions. The earliest deed Linda had for Lewis was in 1826. She is sending me copies of the deeds. We also called the present day owner in hopes that he had the abstracts for the land and we could see who purchased the land from Lewis Rogers, but he did not have them and did not know who would have them.

I am having the BLM check their records to see if they can find two earlier patents that were suppose to be for Lewis Rogers. If the census is right Lewis was in Indiana before 1818 as Lewis Jr. was born in IN. I think that I will see if I can find someone to check both Washington and Lawrence County records for me. Washington County was the original County that Orange and Lawrence came from and the fact that Lewis was listed on the Lawrence County census makes me think that he should have had some land in Lawrence County. I found the two deeds, he bought land and sold in on the same day in Lawrence County, but he should have still had land there if he lived in that county. Has anyone else had any luck finding anything??? Bev

1850 Federal Population Schedule in the database of IN 1850 Federal Census Index, ID# INS7a4561801, Greene Cty, Wright Twnshp., p. 369---could be his son's ( INS7a4561802)

From Bev Tracy: I received the information from the BLM today. They found one land patent, but not the other. I would say that the description was written down wrong when Daisy Petterson copied it. She was in her 80's when she was doing this research. Will have to see if I can find the book in the LDS library. This was not quite what I expected, but it fits into our family.

Land Patent No. 787:

Know Ye That Jeremiah Ellexson assignee of Lewis Rogers having deposited in the Gerneral Land Office a Certificate of Register of the Land Office at Jeffersonville, Indiana whereby it appears that full payment has been made for the South East quarter of Section seventeen, in township three North, of range two East, containing one Hundred and sixty acres of the Lands directed to be sold at Jeffersonville by the Act of Congress, entitled "An Act providing for the sale of the Lands of the United States, in the Territory north-west of the Ohio, and above the mouth of Kentucky River," and of the Avts amendatory of the same, Where is Granted, by the United States, unto the said Jeremiah Ellexson and to his heirs the quarter lot or section of Land above described: To have and to hold the said quarter lot or section of Land, with the Appurtenances, unto the said Jeremiah Ellexson his heirs and assigns forever. The date on the above was the twenty-fifth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty five, and of the Independence of the United States the forty-ninth. John Quincy Adams

It appears that Lewis Rogers went and bought the land for Jeremiah. At least we do know that this is our Lewis Rogers because of the connection to Jeremiah.

I know now that he lived on the road that was the dividing line between Lawrence and Orange Counties and that Lawrence was once a part of Orange County. ---- Bev Tracy

I don't know if you have access to an LDS Library or not, but if you do see if you can find a book "Jeffersonville Indiana Land Enteries" by Janet C. Cowen. This is where the land grants for Lewis Rogers was found. They sent me one, but the Sections were not listed to Lewis Rogers and I think the numbers may have been written down wrong. The above book is where Daisy Petterson found the information and she did all of her researching through the LDS.---Bev Tracy

There is at least one history book in the county library that has an article on the Rogers family. It was written by a descendant of Robert Rogers. They have that Lewis Rogers was born in England and his wife was Mary Hubler, born in Germany. I talked to the lady who wrote the article and ask if maybe they had skipped a generation and she became very upset with me. I still feel that this is a possibility, but I have not found any proof of it. I do feel that they are wrong as Lewis was listed on the census as being born in PA and all of his children listed him as being born in PA on the census. I don't think they would have done this if he had been born in England. One census taker might have made a mistake, but I don't think all of them did. Also, some of the other information is not correct in the article. --from Bev Tracy

from john Mays--However, on September 9, 1850, Lewis Rogers Sr. and wife Martha sold 40 acres of land to Oliver Rogers. I could find no record of how Lewis Rogers obtained this land in order to have sold it by 1850. The libararian in Bloomfield suggested that he probably obtained the land directly from the State of Indiana or from the Federal Government by a grant or purchase. Since the county records only recorded transactions between individuals, a direct purchase of government lands would not have been recorded at the county level. She suggested that we try to search the State Archives at Indianapolis for records of government land grants in Indiana. I did find a book listing Indana Land Entries through the Vincennes District (1807-1877). The library only had Volume 2 of the series. There was a record of a land grant to a Lewis R. Rogers on February 23, 1852, on a Military Land Warrant, in Martin County, IN. Martin County is just south of Greene County and just west of Lawrence County. I do not know if this is our Lewis, or his son Lewis Jr., but he is certainly in the right area. I might be able to follow up on the Military Land Warrant number (MLW #27616) to see if it contains any more information.

At the courthouse, I also attempted to search through the court records for the settlement of the estate for Lewis Rogers and Martha Rogers. I found several references to the continuing case, then a statement that the land was sold and the case was closed, with the executors being relieved of their duties. I asked the clerk's assistant where the original papers for this case would be located, and she went down to the basement to look, then said she could not find the file folder, and it had probably not been preserved. I'm not sure that she really looked very hard, as she was only gone for about five minutes. I (or you) might try again on a future trip. I was told that the only records of the case were those on the microfiche, which I looked at, which only referred to the case being continued over several years, then settled and ended. I agree with you that it seems odd that the actual records of the case would not have been preserved somewhere. I got the impression that the clerk's assistant was not very interested in helping and really did not know very much about looking up records from that far back in time. She was very young. Perhaps on another visit, someone with more experience in these early records will be available. --from John May

Victoria, I really don't know what to tell you to look for or where. I found 2 Land grants for Lewis Rogers and 2 for William Rogers. Here they are:
Land Grant L, p 93, May 1 1784, Monongalia County, 400 acres on Cheat Riiver adjoining Pearpoint, Including his settlement made Therein in the year 1772. This was listed on Virginia Land Grant records, card 6.

Land Grant M, p 66, Lewis Rogers May 1, 1784, Monongalia County, 240 acreson both sides of the Cheat River including his settlement in 1774, listed oncard no. 7.

Land Grant 35, p 328 William, John, and Lewis Rogers, June 8 1796 in Harrison county, 400 acres on Mill Creek, including their improvements which were made in 1768.

Land Grant 81, p. 374 William Rogers, Nov. 10, 1832, 150 acres on Laurel River, listed on card no 61.
I also found one for Margaret Rogers Patent 1, p. 448, August 14, 1637, Upper Norfilk county, 500 acres on a Creek Called Grose Creek butting upon land belonging to Thomas Jordon.

I find Index of 1850, Indiana gives 2 Lewis Rogers living in Wright Township,Greene County--see page 369. Someone in that Co. on Internet maybe will look up for you. Since they were in Greene Co. that looks like a good starting place. In 1850 IN had 3 other Lewis R.s I do not know the counties. I find another Lewis R. in the 1820 census at Martin Co., IN (sorry I did not record the township) with the household having l male age (between) 26-45, one female age 26-45, 3 females under 10 and 4 males 16-26. Happy searching - from Betty

Notes on Davis E. Rogers:
The 1850 census say he was born in Ohio, but two of the later census of his sons, Edward and Davis E. say he was born in PA and their mother was born in KY.

The very first record for anyone named Rogers, Rodgers, etc. was to Davis E. Rogers from James Maloy on Nov 19, 1849. Davis Rogers purchased 80 acres of land on that date, and the transaction was recorded on Feb 6, 1850. from John Mays Greene Co., IN--no further data

Notes on John Rogers:
May have been b. 25 Aug 1816 in Kentucky.

You also asked me to look for any evidence that John Rogers was the son of Lewis Rogers. John Rogers was never granted any land by Lewis Rogers as far as I could find. Also, when the estate of Lewis Rogers was divided in 1854, the land was all sold by the recipients to Oliver Rogers. John Rogers was not listed among those in possession of the land, and was not a party in the sale of this land back to Oliver Rogers.

John Rogers acquired some of his land by purchasing it from Thomas Sorrel in 1858. He also purchased quite a bit of land from the Trustees of the Wabash and Erie Canal in 1859. I made copies of these records, from John Mays --no further data

4 Riley Victoria Rogers b. May 18, 1901 in prob. AR or poss. in MO. There was a travel log that listed all the places and dates from 1899 through 1903, when Ezekiel died. I found this in Riley's belongings after she died. Riley Victoria d. July 9, 1990 in Bremen, Marshall Cty., IN. She married Charles William Eichelberger on Aug. 8, 1933 in Brazil, Clay Cty., IN. Charles' was b. Oct. 22, 1896 in prob. IN and d. March 10, 1977 in Bremen, Marshall Co., IN.

Notes on Riley Victoria:

Not born in Vigo County, Indiana, Riley had a faded blue eyes, fragile bone structure, beautiful long fingers and hands, slightly pigeon-toed, bowed back, wore glasses, very gentle and sweet. The best grandma anyone could have. Riley's second cousins Orin and Maxine Ellingsworth's dad was Clifford Ellingsworth, who was son of Moses Ellingsworth. Had a cousin Algie Snyder? Had Riley become pregnant before marrying Charles W. Eichelberger? Maybe by the preacher she had been in love with? There was a rumor to the effect that she and the preacher were in love. When he moved on, he sent letters to her, but her mother intercepted all the letters. So she thought that he had forgotten all about her. Don't know if it is true.

She and her niece, Opal, who was only 6 yrs. younger than herself, used to take long walks up the R.R. track that run behind their house on Sunday afternoons and then came to grandma's (Letitia Isabelle) and Riley would play the piano and everyone would all sing up a storm. She played the piano for everything that went on in their church.

Was not born in Clay Cty., IN for sure, or Vigo Cty., IN.

Riley Victoria and Charles Eichelberger's children were:
5 William Franklin Eichelberger stillborn in 1933

5 James Richard Eichelberger b. Jan. 27, 1935 in Terre Haute, Vigo Cty., IN. He married 1. Lorraine May Greenbaum on Dec. 24, 1960 in Ridgewood, NJ. She was b. Oct. 12, 1940 in Bronx, NY and d. Aug. 24, 1975 in Michigan City, Laporte County, IN.

Notes on Lorraine---Brown eyes, brown hair, glasses, had a long wide nose, wide mouth, straight teeth, caucasian, short hair, heavy-lidded "Italian eyes", high cheekbones, looked Jewish.

Their children are:
6 Victoria Susan Eichelberger married Mark Douglas Dean

Their children are:
7 Jared Thomas Dean
7 Caleb Joseph Dean
6 David William Eichelberger married Elaine Ann Whybrew

Their children are:
7 Daniel Jacob Eichelberger

Notes on John Rogers:

Doesn't seem to be the same John Rogers listed above. Found on the 1860 census living with Ezekiel Ellexson.

I have the following documents to prove the above lineage:

James Richard Eichelberger birth certificate

Riley Victoria Rogers death cert and marriage certificate and a tintype pic that has a little piece of paper identifying her father and giving her birthdate...there is no birth record available.

Letitia Ellingsworth death certificate, marriage certificate to Earlywine, a divorce decree for Earlywine, marriage certificate to second husband, and a travel log for when she was living with Ezekiel Rogers

Military records and pension papers for Ezekiel Riley Rogers from the Civil War, a tintype of him

Tintypes of Zilpha Ellixson Rogers and her husband, we think, Lewis Rogers.

Numerous pictues of Letitia Ellingsworth and on down to my children's generation

Still awaiting on Ezekiel's death certificate from IA.
