Names of Greene County Towns

In the last two issues of the News, W. D. RITTER has contributed articles on the names and origins of towns in Greene county, but through an oversight Koleen was omitted. Joseph E. WALTON, the popular postmaster at Koleen, kindly calls Mr. R.’s attention to the omission and contributes the following:

"Us Koleen folks felt somewhat slighted when we read your ‘History of the Towns of Greene County’ in the News. We think our town is the best trading point in the eastern part of the county, but while you name Dresden, Robison, Rockwood and Mineral (and by the way, there is no town at all at Rockwood now), you skip Koleen entirely, but perhaps you didn’t know our ‘history’, and so I will give it to you: Koleen was founded by John C. FERGUSON, now deceased, a native of Ohio, but whose parents were Scotch, an among the older settlers of this county. The town was first called New Scotland, but when they applied for a postoffice authorities objected to the name for fear of confusion with Scotland by the mail service, and Mr Ferguson told the first postmaster (Mr. MITCHELL) to send the name Colligny, but, not having read of Coligny, Mr. M. spelled it phonetically, hence our unique name. Hope the above may be prove interesting to you, whether you publish it or not."
