Henry H. HEATON

Prominent Citizen Dies At Ripe Old Age

Henry H. HEATON, one of Bloomfield’s oldest and respected citizens, died last Thursday night. The obituary follows:

Henry H. HEATON, son of David and Carrie HEATON was born October 10, 1840, and died December 9, 1926, at the age of eighty-six years, one month and twenty-nine days. He was married in 1859 to Jerushah DOBBINS to which union two sons were born, Dr. J. B. HEATON, and D. W. HEATON, both of Indianapolis. In 1865 only six years after their marriage his wife passed away.

On June 28, 1868, he was married to Mrs. Caroline MCCOY and to this union seven children were born, four of whom are yet living, Harley HEATON, of Terre Haute; Mel HEATON, and Mrs. Lewis WORKMAN, of Bloomfield and Mrs. Walter BOOZE, of Bloomington. A stepdaughter Mrs. Lucile GASTEN, who died August 7, 1923 was also raised in the home and was held in high esteem by the entire family, and treated as a sister and daughter. The three who preceded their father were Thursie J. HEATON BUCHER, who died September 8, 1900; Franklin G. HEATON, who died March 20, 1897 and Dovie Pearl HEATON, who died December 1, 1901. He is also survived by his aged wife, who has given unsparingly of her strength and time to ministering unto him in his affliction. He had twenty-five grandchildren of whom twenty-two are yet living. He also has eighteen great-grandchildren, all of whom are living.

He was born in Richland Township and had spent his entire life there but moved from his farm about eighteen years ago to Bloomfield, where he spent his declining years.

He never united with any church but professed conversion many years ago and has always been a believer in Christ as a personal Savior. He was industrious and prosperous and contributed largely to the upbuilding and betterment of the community in which he lived. His kind and loveable disposition and his genial, friendly greeting made him a favorite of all who knew him intimately. He was a jovial bent of mind and carried good cheer and sunshine though his more than four score years. He was a kind and indulgent father, a devoted companion, a true and genuine friend, a broad minded patriotic citizen and a good neighbor. He had been in failing health for several years but only recently was his condition considered serious. A few days ago his children, who have always been very attentive and devoted to him, were called to his bedside when his spirit peacefully passed on to the God who gave it.

The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Guy V. HARTMAN, of the M. E. church at the family home at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon, Interment in Grandview Cemetery.

The music was furnished by a male quartet consisting of M. F. PATE, G. E. MCCRACKEN, John CUSHMAN, and H. L. DONEY.

Among the people from out-of-town who attended the funeral of Henry HEATON were J. L. RIDDLE, Vincennes; T. M. HEATON and Mrs. SECREST, of Bloomington; Howard L. HYATT, Terre Haute; Ed E. LOVE and Will L. WADSWORTH, Worthington.
