Circa 1890's Photo Enhanced by: Robert Manson |
Nelson REEDReed Nelson REED was born in Ohio, February 3, 1851. Died at his residence in Robison, November 13, 1914. He was of a family of seven children — five boys and two girls — four of whom are living. He was married to Louisa Jane WRIGHT October 16, 1873. This was a happy union and unto them was born nine children. They, together with the wife, survive. For twenty-four years they toiled together, sharing each others joys and sorrows and hardships incident to pioneer life, striving to make a home for themselves and family. Then his devoted wife was stricken with rheumatism, and has since been almost a helpless invalid. But during all these years of her affliction he was a dutiful husband, doing everything in his power to relieve her suffering and to make her comfortable in her affliction. He had been in declining health for several months, but during the last two or three weeks his strength failed rapidly. He retained consciousness to the end. He often expressed his readiness to go but regretted to leave his family. He was happily converted and united with the M. E. church at Ashcraft Chapel in February 1907, and as long as he was able to attend church services it as a pleasure to him to testify to the love of Jesus and appealed to the sinners to accept Christ. He would always express his regret of not enlisting in the cause of the Master earlier in life, pleading with the people to do so while young. And “He who spoke peace to his soul” failed him not when nearing the Jordan of Death, for he was enabled to testify, “I am not afraid to die,” but again expressing his regret in having to leave his children and an invalid wife. The funeral was conducted at his late home by Rev. Quince FERGUSON. Afterwards followed by a large concourse of sympathizing friends and relatives his remains were laid to rest in the Ashcraft Cemetery. May the choicest blessings of Him who know our sorrows and who is acquainted with our grief rest upon the bereft loved ones, and may they lean upon Him who has promised to be husband to the widow and a father to the fatherless, making Him their guide until they are again unified in an unbroken family where sickness and death are unknown.
