Charles SPENCER, Sr.Charles SPENCER, Sr. was born March 7, 1807; died Nov. 12, 1898; age ninety-one years, eight months, and five days. He was buried in Indian Prairie Cemetery Monday, Nov. 12, the funeral being preached by the Rev. L. R. EDMONDS. A large concourse of relatives and friends were in attendance, paying a last tribute to the true moral character and uprightness of the deceased. He was three times married. He was born in Kentucky, marrying his first wife there. He moved to Stafford Township, Greene County, Indiana, in 1834, having resided within one-half mile of where he located continuously to the time of his death. Of the first marriage, seven children were born, all living except Moses, who died in Andersonville prison, and John, who died in the service of the union in the late war. His son Thomas, was also a soldier in the civil war. Of the second marriage, five children were born, four of whom survive him. Fifty-four grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren survive him, while eleven of the former and eight of the latter have been called to that better land by the cycle of death. He joined the Baptist church when about twenty years old, of which church he has lived a consistent member until his death. In politics, he was first a Whig, going to the Republicans upon the organization of that party. He was considered by all who knew him to be a man of true moral character and upright in his dealing with all men.
