Isaac Marshall Greeley WINESPROMINENT PIONEER OF MARCO DIES Was Formerly Sheriff of Greene County From 1919 To 1922. Isaac Marshall Greeley WINES, eighty, pioneer Linton resident and widely known former sheriff of Greene County, passed away at 5:30 o'clock Saturday morning at his home in Marco after an illness of one week. His death was attributed to a cerebral hemorrhage. Born in Linton, July 9, 1857, Mr. WINES, the son of Smith and Ellen (CODDINGTON) WINES had spent his entire life in this county. He was a member of one of the county's oldest pioneer families, and was the last member of his generation of the family. All of his earlier life the deceased spent in Linton, moving to Marco twelve years ago to take up his residence there. He was elected for two terms as sheriff of Greene County on the Republican ticket, serving from 1919 until 1922. He was a member of the Linton Methodist church and for many years played a prominent part in its affairs. Points of interest in the life of the deceased from on of Mr. WINES' former associates were given Saturday morning The death of Greeley WINES removes the last in his generation of a pioneer family. His forefathers came to this section when it was a wilderness. His grandfather, along with the latter's brothers, was an earlier settler here in what is now Stockton Township. Whenever mention is made of the early history of Greene County the name of WINES appears prominently. To a remarkable degree 'Greeley' retained a great deal of the history of early times, much of which was handed down to him through tradition. But he, himself, as a boy and young man saw much of the pioneering in what may be called its second stages. His memory was remarkable and his faculty of story-telling and of retaining recollections of other days as he saw them made of Mr. WINES a real historian. His passing removes a rich source of much early history of the locality perhaps that now will never be told. Mrs. WINES, to whom he was married in 1879 died on December 1, 1934. Five children preceded him in death, as did three sisters and three brothers. Surviving are the following children: Mrs. Hattie MORGAN, Danville, Illinois; Mrs. Will SALZMAN, Lyons; Smith WINES, Marco; Mrs. Emma TAYLOR, Bloomington; Mrs. Frank DEAN, Bloomfield; Miss Phyllis WINES, Akron, Ohio, and Jack WINES, Marco. Funeral services were conducted at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon in the Linton First Methodist church with the Rev. A. W. SHIELDS, of Loogootee, in charge. Burial was made in the Fairview Cemetery north of Linton. THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday November 3, 1937,Volume , Number , Page 1, Column , |
