BOLTZ - HEDGE
NAME:
Linda Hedges
Harley Hedge recently passed away. He was a twin born to Mary Etta Boltz and William Henry Hedge in 1904. Other children of this marriage, all born in Greene Co., were Ruth (Hedge) Ridener, Verna (Hedge) Krach and Harvey (Harley's twin). All have passed away now except Harvey who resides in Marion, IN. Harvey has asked me to find the whereabouts of the log house in which he was born. It was removed many, many years ago. It was owned at one time by the Boltz family and occupied by William Henry and Mary Etta (Boltz) Hedge. I believe it was on Wildcat Creek in or near Tulip. Mary Etta (Boltz) Hedge and William Henry's parents, and several other relatives are buried in the cemetery there. Harvey has talked about using a horse to pull the summer kitchen up a hill above the house. Family talk was that the remainder of the log house had been taken apart and moved to a park. A discussion with state parks here in Indiana drew a blank. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

COAKLEY-SULLIVAN-DICKERSON
NAME:
Kay Phillips DATE: 8/24/96

Hi, I am looking for info on the following from Greene County: JEREMIAH J. COAKLEY b. 1849 in Canada, died 1916 in Nokomis, IL married Catherine SULLIVAN, Feb 3, 1883 in Brazil, IN.They had 5 children, THOMAS FRANCIS(Frank) b. 1884; JOHN D.(Jack)b.1886; ELLEN C.(Nellie)b. 1888; ARTHUR P. b. 1890; and JAMES b. 1896. Catherine died in 1896. Unable to take care of his children, the two oldest sons were to work in the coal mines with him. Arthur was sent to live with his uncle CORNELIUS COAKLEY, and James went to live with his uncle TIMOTHY COAKLEY. My grandmother was sent to work in a boardinghouse, I believe in Linton. I believe the owners were named Fitzpatrick or Fitzgerald. Were they also relatives? Jeremiah J. Coakley moved to Linton in about 1902 and lived there until about 1915? when he was seriously maimed in a mining accident and could no longer work. He moved to his son Jack's home in Nokomis, IL until he died. could no longer work He received a settlement of $2500 from the Vandalia Coal company of Linton for his injuries. Does anyone know anything about this accident? Is there a newspaper in that area that I might write to for information? Jeremiah had four brothers and two sisters who lived in Linton: CORNELIUS, JOHN, TIMOTHY, JAMES, MARY and ELIZABETH COAKLEY. My grandmother ELLEN COAKLEY married JAMES DICKERSON 1905 in Linton. Will be happy to share info with anyone else interested in these people.

Freeland, Sedwick, Rawlings

William H. Adams Sun Nov 24 17:10:44 1996
During the British march to Washington, D.C in the War of 1812, planters in Calvert Co., MD suffered major destruction of their farms. In the fall of 1816, brothers Joseph and Benjamin Freeland, Judge Sedwick, and Daniel Rawlings explored Indiana looking for suitable new farmland. They chose the Indian Creek area of Monroe County and another area in Owen County for the families to settle. The big move was in 1817 and it included several freed slave families. I would like to contact any researchers whose families might have accompanied them or have come later as a result of this migration. I would like to contact the African- American descendants of those former slaves as well. One freed slave's name was Cissie and she became a missionary in Indianapolis. She visited the Freeland family into the 1850s. My belief is that several other families may have accompanied this group from Calvert Co. and possibly Talbot Co. If your family came from this area of Maryland in the 1815-30 period, I would like to receive from you information on the immigrant family.
