During the British march to Washington, D.C in the War of 1812, planters in Calvert Co., MD suffered major destruction of their farms. In the fall of 1816, brothers Joseph and Benjamin Freeland, Judge Sedwick, and Daniel Rawlings explored Indiana looking for suitable new farmland. They chose the Indian Creek area of Monroe County and another area in Owen County for the families to settle. The big move was in 1817 and it included several freed slave families. I would like to contact any researchers whose families might have accompanied them or have come later as a result of this migration. I would like to contact the African- American descendants of those former slaves as well. One freed slave's name was Cissie and she became a missionary in Indianapolis. She visited the Freeland family into the 1850s. My belief is that several other families may have accompanied this group from Calvert Co. and possibly Talbot Co. If your family came from this area of Maryland in the 1815-30 period, I would like to receive from you information on the immigrant family.
