John Davidson of LyonsJohn Davidson Furniture and Undertaking Lyons, Indiana ![]() This was printed in a special edition of the Bloomfield News dated 21 May 1901. It touted the areas industrial, agricultural and business of Greene County Indiana it was a 16 page issue with 10,000 copies. Among the business men of the county who can claim the honor of being self made, as the term implies in parlance phrase, is John Davidson, the progressive furniture dealer, insurance representative and undertaker, of Lyons, Ind. Mr. Davidson was not born with the proverbial silver spoon in his mouth, therefore from boyhood days up, has depended entirely on his own resources, being the architect and builder of the great business success that has crowned his efforts. The advent of his business embarkment dates back to the days of becoming a clerk in the general store conducted by E. M. Steins. After five years clerkship, he branched into business on his own account, beginning in undertaking, using one room, size, 12X14, of his dwelling house. The trite trusim of proficiency being the precedent to success, is well exampled in the subsequent history of the establishment which has grown from the humble one-affair, to one of the leasing commercial institutions of Greene county. In, 1896, one year previous to the erection of the splendid brick building shown by cut, furniture was placed in stock. The first floor of the new building is taken up entirely by furniture and the insurance office. The second floor is devoted mostly to the undertaking department, where is found one of the largest stocks of caskets and burial equipment represented in this county. A fine funeral car is in service of this branch of business. As an embalmer Mr. Davidson is classed as one of the state’s most proficient. On his last examination on embalming before the State board he made the grad of 98 ¾. In fire insurance, he also transacts a nice business annually, being the local agent for the following well-known insurance companies: The Phoenix, Hanover, Hartford, Indiana and Vernon. He is also the representative of the Southern Indiana Mutual Building, Savings and Loan Association, and has, also, quite a clinetege of eastern capitalists, who place money in his hands to loan on goo real estate security. In the town of Lyons there is not to be found a more public spirited man than Mr. Davidson. Whatever is for the interest of Lyons, you can rest assured he champions. He is one of the principal promoters of the Indpendent Telephone Co., lately established in that section of the county. Personally he is a moral high-toned christian gentleman, a member of the M. E. church, filling the office of the trustee in the same; also belongs to the I.O.O.F. lodge and encampement, and in the grand lodge has represented his lodge. |
