On 29 mar 1918 he entered the army and went to Camp Zachary Taylor Ky. One month later, he was transferred to Camp Greene N.C. and on 10 Jul 1918, he left for overseas. He was stationed at St. Nazaire France with the Fourteenth Co 4th Regiment Base Section No. 1 Camp 8. He was discharged 28 Jul 1919.

Burford, Printer and Binder. Page 258. Photo Plate 47James Everett SWOPE, son of George R. & Dora E. MITCHELL SWOPE was born in Union Twp., Howard Co. Ind 31 May 1887. On Sept. 21, 1917 he was called into service and received his first military training at Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky; later he was ordered to Camp Shelby, Miss. and assigned to Co. I 152nd Infantry. On 3 Jun 1918, he left for France with the June automatic replacement troops, Co. No. 16 and after he arrived overseas, he was assigned to Co. H. 167th Infantry, 42nd "Rainbow" Division. He was on three of the most important fronts of the war: Chateau Therry, Verdun and St. Mihiel. Beginning 26 Jul 1918, he saw continuous service intil 5 Nov. when he was ordered to a rest camp for a stay of 5 weeks. In Feb. 1919 he was transferred to the 146th Infantry. His discharge was issued at camp Sherman, Ohio 24 Apr 1919. NOTE: No entry was located in a basic search of the Social Security Death Index for James SWOPE, born 1887. Photo Plate 16.Oscar Ray SWOPE, son of William Russell and Myrtle SWOPE was born at Greentown Ind. in 1897. He attended high school one year. He enlisted at the army at Hannibal, Mo. and served in Fort Wayne, Detroit Mich. where he was attached to toe Q.M.C. He was discharged 7 Jun 1919.
