G.A.R. (Grant Army of the Republic) Encampment List - 1893

The Howard county soldiery will cut a conspicuous figure in the great encampment this week. This is said advisedly, fully recognizing the stupendous magnitude of this national gathering in which veterans from every state in the Union will be present. At three o'clock this afternoon, T.J. Harrison Post, G.A.R., 200 strong, boarded a special train at the L.E. & W. depot and steamed away amid the shouts and cheers of the vast crowd gathering to see them off.

Before taking the train, the boys, with glittering uniform, bright new flags and banners, drew up in line on Mulberry street, where they had their pictures taken. They are a fine looking body of men and no mistake. Many soldiers and their friends took earlier trains, some later, and all told, fully 800 Howard county people are at Indianapolis to witness the opening of the greatest and grandest encampment in the history of the Grand Army of the Republic.

Besides all the regular trains south carrying from five to ten coaches each with every seat taken and aisles and platforms packed, specials have passed through every few minutes all the day - all long trains and all packed almost to suffocation. This afternoon it has been almost a continuous string of trains heavily freighted with soldiers and their families cheering the flags and decorations along the way, and waving hats and handkerchiefs to the crowds of people lining on both sides of the track.

The Howard county contingent will be camped at Camp Lew Wallace on East Washington Street, which will be their headquarters during the week and all Howard County people in attendance are asked to call there.
