Vital Records Information
The County Clerk holds the marriage, divorce, probate and civil court records. The County Recorder holds the land records, and the County Health Department has birth, death and burial records.Marriages in Howard County were recorded starting in 1844, while births and deaths were not officially recorded until 1882. Even then, there are many pre-1900 and turn-of the century births and deaths that were not recorded. However, a few births and deaths were recorded starting in 1875.
If the Birth or Death occurred between 1875 and 1920, the record should be recorded in the Master Index Books in the Health Department office.
The Kokomo-Howard County Public Library also has a copy of the Master Index Books; they can be ordered through the Howard County Genealogical Society as well.
If the birth or death occurred after l920, you must provide enough information so they can locate the record. All records are listed in date order. The date requested should be within a one-year timeframe if possible.
