Anyone out there researching CLELLAND / MacLELLAN / MacCLELLAND?
John CLELLAND / MacLELLAN / MacCLELLAND was born 23 Feb 1809 in (West) Virginia. His parents are James CLELLAND / MacLELLAN / MacCLELLAND and Masse WILSON.
My great-grandparents, John and Emily, pioneered in Jackson Township of Howard County. They cleared a 200-acre farm out of a hardwood forest inhabited by wolves and black bears. (I grew up on that farm.)
They wrote that their farm was so isolated that they actually looked forward to the cows coming home in the evening--for their company. That's a lonely lifestyle!
Although the surname was eventually "Americanized" to CLELLAND by John (and his son, John Charles [my grandfather], used the surname CLELLAND exclusively) John's own surname is spelled variously in different civil records as CLELLAND / MACLELLAN / MACCLELLAND.
Therefore, we're collecting info on all three spellings, hoping to piece together our family tree eventually, so all my ancestors will be remembered by our children.
MacLELLAN is a Gaelic name (from the Highlands of Scotland) that is spelled many different ways in English, depending on who was taking the census. I have an entire page of various ways of spelling this surname (about 100).
MacLELLAN is sept #113 of Clan Donald.
Was it James or his father who served in the Revolutionary War with George Washington? (Family tradition) We have info to share. Thanks!
