Obtaining Death Records
Death records before October 1899 and probably no earlier than 1882 can
only be obtained from the office of the local health department. Records
after that date can also be obtained from the Vital Records Department of the Indiana State Department of
Health.
The death
certificate generally contains the deceased person's name; age; sex; race;
marital status; name of spouse; birthplace; occupation; name and
birthplace of father and mother; name of informant; place of burial;
funeral director; date of death; cause of death; duration of illness;
signature of attending physician; physician's address; date certificate
was signed. Later death certificates will also include the deceased's
Social Security number; whether foreign-born; whether a war veteran and if
so, of which war.
The Indiana Works Progress Administration indexed the Jackson County death records in 1942. The WPA death record index indicates the name, sex, age, death date, death location, book and page number of the record and whether it is included in the County health records or in the City (Seymour) health records. The Genealogical Society has printed the Jackson County WPA death record index in two volumes: (1) 1882 through 1920 and (2) 1921 through 1940. Additionally, each of the township cemetery books produced by the Society includes an excerpt from the WPA death record index for the township.
