Murphy Family

Submitted by:  Orvill Paller,  Murphy family historian

Here are generations one, two, and three starting with Samuel Murphy and his wife Mary "Polly" Leftwich Murphy to their great grandchildren.

SECOND GENERATION

+6 SAMUEL2 MURPHY (JOHN SR.1) b 30 Mar 1779 Bedford Co. VA, d 8 Aug 1821 Brownstown, Jackson Co. IN (from his brother William's family Bible), was a son of John Murphy Sr and Katherine "Katy" Bates; married Mary "Polly" Leftwich (daughter of Uriah Leftwich [See The Leftwich-Turner Families of Virginia by Walter Hopkins for her Leftwich ancestry.]  At the time of the wedding, Samuel Murphy was underage and required his father's consent. Mary Leftwich Murphy's grave marker in Riverview Cemetery, Seymour, Jackson Co. IN says that she was born in 1773 and died in 1867.) on 17 Jan 1799 in Bedford Co. VA.  The obituary of his son Samuel Jennings Murphy states that the son came with his father to Salem, Washington Co. IN in 1819, and soon thereafter came to Brownstown where the father died in 1823.  The obituary of his son George Haden Murphy states that the father died in 1822, along with several other members of the family.

Based upon the birth places of their children, Samuel and Polly left Virginia after 1810, passed through Kentucky about 1814 and arrived in Indiana by 1819.  They appeared in the 1820 census of Jackson Co. IN.  Polly shows up without Samuel in the 1830 census of Jackson County, living next door to her daughter Elizabeth.  By 1850, Polly was living with her son George H. Murphy in Jackson Co.  In 1860 she was living with her daughter Mary S. (Murphy) Fenly Woody. The obituary of their son James L. Murphy indicates that Polly and Samuel had twelve children, six girls and six boys.

More information on Samuel and Polly Murphy is provided in a biography of their son Samuel Jennings Murphy, from Portrait and biographical record of Johnson, Poweshiek and Iowa Counties, Iowa : containing biographical sketches of prominent and representative citizens, also biographies of the presidents of the United States (1893), pages 214-215, and is given in the following two paragraphs.

This suggests that John Murphy Sr, father of Samuel Murphy, was born in England and emigrated to Virginia, where he acquired about 600 acres of land and a large number of slaves.  John is said to have freed 100 slaves (apparently for religious reasons) at the time of the War of 1812. He actually freed them 24 Dec 1792 (see Chapter One).  John was said to have been a Whig and a Methodist, but he left the Methodist church because it advocated slavery, which no longer suited him.  The Whig part is doubtful, since John Murphy died in 1819, while the American Whig party was not formed until 1834. Other information about John Murphy Sr is also subject to doubt, since it is based upon the undocumented memory of Samuel J. Murphy, who was about four years old when he moved hundreds of miles from where John Murphy Sr lived.

Samuel Murphy was a shoemaker by trade and followed that occupation in Virginia until after the War of 1812, when he went, with a six-horse team, across the mountains to Mercer County, Kentucky. Soon after his arrival, all his property was destroyed by fire, and a few years later he moved to Jackson County, Indiana, where he continued as a shoemaker.  He was said to have been a Whig.  Polly Leftwich was said to have borne her husband thirteen children, but reared only seven to maturity.  She died when over eighty years of age and was buried in the city cemetery of Seymour IN.

  Their children are:
+14 Katharine3 Murphy, b ca 1800 Bedford Co. VA, d 25 Jul 1846 Jackson Co. IN,  buried Brownstown City Cemetery, Brownstown, Jackson Co. IN; married John Cole Vermilya (b 11 Sep 1803 Delaware Co. NY, d 12 Jan 1897 Tama Co. IA) in 1823 in Jackson Co. IN (according to husband's obituary)

+15 Lewis Fletcher3 Murphy, b ca 1802 Bedford Co. VA; married Cyrene Congleton on 27 Dec 1823 (marriage license date) in Jackson Co. IN and, Rachel Wells on 12 Dec 1832 (marriage license date) in Jackson Co. IN.  In the 1840 Census of Jackson Co, Lewis F. Murphy (age 30-40) apparently has a wife (age 20 to 30) and one daughter 5 and under ten which could be from either marriage though more probably the marriage to Rachel. Since a Rachel Murphy applied for a marriage license in Jackson County in 1842 and again in 1843, apparently Lewis Fletcher Murphy was dead by that time.

Redman were administrators of Samuel Stanley's estate and guardians of Emeline C. and Phebe Maria Stanley, minor heirs of Samuel Stanley.  On 12 May 1836 it was noted in the Jackson County Probate Order book that "Betsy S. Stanley, alias Elizabeth Stanley, has since departed this life"  George H. Murphy became administrator of the estate. This agrees with information in Samuel Jennings Murphy's obituary.

According to his biography in History of Iowa County, he went to a log cabin school until he was 14, then was apprenticed to a hatter for seven years.  He worked as a hatter for several years, and when forced to stop being a hatter by ill health, then became a farmer.  Incidentally, hatters were prone to ill health because of mercury poisoning, hence "mad as a hatter," although mercury may not have been used in the American hat industry as early as 1835.

Samuel Jennings Murphy moved in 1850 to Iowa Co. IA by wagon, camping out along the way.  He had only $3 cash and an old gun when he arrived, and made his living by splitting rails.  In 1853 he settled on land obtained by a land warrant which his brother sent to him.  He later moved to Marengo, after which he purchased a substantial farm.  He was Methodist and a radical Republican.  He was elected to the Iowa state legislature in 1876, but as this was for a special session which was never called, he never served in the legislature.   He then moved to Iowa Co IA.  He and three of his sons fought on the Union side during the Civil War. In 1876 Samuel Jennings Murphy was living in Marengo, Iowa Co. IA.

An obituary of Samuel Jennings Murphy was in the Brownstown (Indiana) Banner on 10 June 1897.  It states that he came with his father's family to Salem, Washington Co. IN in 1819 and soon thereafter to Brownstown, Jackson Co. IN, where his father died in 1823.

  Children of the first marriage:

Both husbands were physicians.

CA) on 2 May 1861 in Marengo, Iowa Co. IA.  He was an officer for the Negro Army Corps of the Union Army in the Civil War.

+43 Elizabeth R.4 Murphy, b 10 May 1838 Brownstown, Jackson Co. IN, d 28 Jul 1913 Omaha, Dougals Co. NE;  married (1) Theodore E.A. Buehler (b 7 Jun 1832 in Germany, d 22 May 1875 Chicago, Cook Co. IL) on 30 Oct 1855 at Brownstown, Jackson Co IN. (The obit of Elizabeth’s father, Samuel Jennings Murphy's obituary gives his name as Col. T.E. Buehler.) and, (2) Charles Whiting McNair (b 20 Mar 1847 Woodville, Ontario Co. NY, d 15 Oct 1905) on 3 Oct 1876 in Jackson Co. IN. She gave birth to nine or ten children. By 1900 eight were living.  The ninth (1900 census) and/or tenth (1910 census) are unidentified.

44 Emory A.4 Murphy*, b ca 1840 Brownstown, Jackson Co. IN, buried with mother at Crane Hill/Durland Cemetery, Jackson Co. IN (Query: Did mother die in childbirth?)  His parents are given as S J and E Murphy.

*Emory A. Murphy (apparently the first of this name, died young. This first Emory was named as part of list of children for Samuel Jennings Murphy in the History of Iowa County and applied to the children of his second marriage.  However, the Biographical Record of Bartholomew and Jackson Counties Indiana page 583 it reads in part:  “They (Samuel Jennings and Elizabeth Murphy) became the parents of five children, of whom Mrs. Wilson was the eldest , and three of the number are still living.”  The date of the publication is 1904.

    Elizabeth Warner Murphy’s obituary reads:

“DIED--On the 29th of January, 1840, Elizabeth, consort of S. J. Murphy of Jackson Co., Ind. Sister Murphy was born of respectable parents in Frederick Co., Maryland. Her father emigrated to the west in 1824 and settled in Jackson Co., Ind. where Elizabeth was soon called to mourn the loss, first of a mother, then of a father. She embraced the religion in 1829 and joined the Methodist Episcopal church.  The relations of sister, friend, wife, mother, she sustained with the highest credit to herself. Her piety was the homage of her whole heart and the devotion of her whole life to God. She felt a strong impression four months before that the time of her departure was at hand. She waited the hour in readiness, the messenger came. She was prepared, and after committing her little ones to the Father of the Fatherless and taking an affectionate farewell of her husband, her body slept.”

The obituary of Sophia Hayes Umbarger Murphy states:

“Sophia Hays Umbarger was born in Washington county, Indiana, on December 20th, 1825, was united in marriage to S. J. Murphy at Brownstown, Indiana, August 6th 1842.  to this union were born seven children:  six sons and one daughter, and one son passed away in early childhood; another son at the age of ten, while four sons are living, vix:  Samuel S.; Emory W.; William B.; and John D. Murphy.”

On the basis of Sophia’s obituary and the biographical record quoted I believe that the unnamed infant in the Durland Cemetery is Emory A. Murphy and is Elizabeth’s son rather than Sophia’s son.  All articles written about Samuel Jennings Murphy refer to only four children for his union with Elizabeth except for this biographical record which gives her five children. Since the cemetery stone indicates she is the mother of an infant son who also died in 1840 it would make sense to believe that the first Emory is that infant son.

  Children of the second marriage:
+45 Samuel Soule4 Murphy,  b 22 Oct 1843 Jackson Co. IN, d 8 Nov 1916 Winfield, Cowley Co. KS, buried Baldwin City, Douglas Co. KS; married Prudence Matilda Kibben (b 24 Jun 1848 Joliet, Will Co. IL, d 25 Dec 1915 Baldwin City, Douglas Co. KS) on 6 Sept 1870 in Mt. Pleasant, Henry Co. IA

+23 GEORGE HADEN3 MURPHY (SAMUEL2, JOHN SR.1) b Feb 1814 Mercer Co. KY near Harrodsburg, Mercer Co. KY, d 10 May 1896 Seymour, Jackson Co. MD) on 28 Jan 1837 in Cranestown, Jackson Co. IN, in a small log hut at the home of his brother Samuel Jennings Murphy.  Both George and Lydia are buried in the Seymour City Riverview cemetery.  Lydia was a sister of Elizabeth Warner who married Samuel Jennings Murphy and Rebecca Warner who married (2) Dominicus Abbott Kelly. Samuel Jennings Murphy was named Lydia's guardian on 5 Jan 1832 by probate order as recorded in the Jackson Co. IN Probate Order Book. George taught school in Brownstown, Jackson County about 1833.  He became a justice of the peace of Jackson Co in 1839 and afterwards became the four-term treasurer of Jackson Co.  He declined renomination and moved to a farm in Hamilton Township just below Honeytown, where he engaged in agriculture for three years. In March 1866 he became cashier at the First National Bank of Seymour, IN and a member of the Masonic Lodge. Lydia's obituary states that she was the mother of twelve children; the names of nine are known.

172 Daniel M.5 Fenley, b ca 1865 Indiana, d 3 Oct 1915 in Memphis, Shelby Co. TN, buried Carr Township, Jackson Co. IN  (This son of George M. Fenley was probably born out of wedlock.  The 1880 census has him with his father and stepmother Martha Jane and is 15.  The obituary has him age 50 which would make the 1865 year the correct year.  However, as his father was enumerated with his brother William on the 1870 census and no family when Daniel would have been 5 years old.  It is more probable that Daniel was either with his mother or actually had not been born until 1875 or possibly had been adopted but no other information is available.)
